This study compares the effects of Combined Cognitive Reappraisal (CCR: acceptance and reappraise via perspective-taking) and suppression using the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). One hundred participants were randomly assigned to one of the two groups and subjective, physiological, and behavioural data were recorded. Continuous electrocardiography was recorded to measure heart rate variability (HRV) and stress levels. Affective ratings were provided before and after the TSST. Behavioural expressions were videotaped and analysed independently. Trait social anxiety/fear, age and gender entered as covariates. Although no group differences were found on affective ratings, the CCR group presented less physiological stress, higher HRV, their speech was better perceived, displayed more affiliative smile and hand gestures. Results suggested that CCR is more appropriate than suppression for managing social stress situations.</p>

Model output: Crescentic sandbar behaviour along a curved coast

<p>This data set contains the model output used in&nbsp;the journal article&nbsp;Rutten et al. &#39;Simulating crescentic sandbar behaviour along a curved coast&#39;.&nbsp;</p> <p>ORGANIZATION:<br> The data set consists of 50&nbsp;netcdf files, corresponding to the 50&nbsp;model runs. Bed level change was simulated under time-variant and time-invariant wave conditions over a period of 20 days. The reference runs are named RunRef1.nc (time-invariant wave forcing at the offshore boundary) and RunRef2.nc (time-varying&nbsp;wave forcing at the offshore boundary). Runs&nbsp;1-39 are variations on the forcing, whereas&nbsp;Runs 40-48 are variations on the bathymetry&nbsp;(see&nbsp;Table 1 in the journal publication for the boundary condition in each run).&nbsp;</p> <p>Each file contains the grid, time vector and&nbsp;bed elevation. The article presents experimental data sets on the evacuation movement and behaviour of preschool children observed during 15 evacuation drills in 10 nursery schools in the Czech Republic involving 970 children (3-7 years of age) and 87 staff members. &nbsp;</p> <p>In the presented spreadsheets, raw experimental data on speed-density and flow-density relationships are provided separately for corridors, straight staircases (flights, landings, and entire staircase), and doorways. The movement travel speed (&#39;Speed&#39;) is expressed in [m&middot;s<sup>-1</sup>], specific flow (&#39;Flow&#39;) in&nbsp;[pers&middot;s<sup>-1</sup>&middot;m<sup>-1</sup>], density variable is expressed in the units of [pers&middot;m<sup>&minus;2</sup>] (&#39;Density1&#39;) and [m<sup>&minus;2</sup>&middot;m<sup>&minus;2</sup>] (&#39;Density2&#39;). Observations made for the different age groups of children are distinguished by letters: &#39;J&#39; &ndash; Junior, &#39;S&#39; &ndash; Senior, &#39;S+&#39; - Senior+, &#39;M&#39; &ndash; Mixed. With or without you: Gut microbiota does not predict aggregation behaviour in females of the European earwig

<p>Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiota could be one of the main driving forces behind the evolution of group living. However, these studies are mainly based on our knowledge of species in which non-social individuals are rare and abnormal, calling&nbsp;into question the adaptive value of the reported&nbsp;association between group-living and gut microbiota.&nbsp;In this study, we addressed this issue by testing this association in females of the European earwig, an insect showing frequent,&nbsp;naturaland&nbsp;wide&nbsp;inter-individual variation in the expression of group living. We video-tracked 320 field-sampled females to quantify their natural variation in aggregation and then tested whether the most and least gregarious females had different gut microbiota. We also compared the general activity, boldness, body size and body condition of these females and examined the association between each of these traits and the gut microbiota. Contrary to our predictions, we found no&nbsp;difference in&nbsp;gut microbiota between the most and least gregarious females,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;no difference&nbsp;between these females&nbsp;in terms of general activity, boldness, body size and condition.&nbsp;We did show&nbsp;that&nbsp;the&nbsp;gut microbiota&nbsp;of females&nbsp;was&nbsp;overall&nbsp;linked to their body condition, even though it was also unrelated to the other measurements. Overall, these results demonstrate that a host&#39;s gut microbiota is not necessarily a major driver of aggregation&nbsp;behaviour&nbsp;in species with inter-individual variation in group living and call for future studies to investigate the determinants and role of gut microbiota in earwigs.</p>

European consumers ́ preference and willingness to pay for food products labelled as obtained by a circular farming system -in relation to environmental attitudes and consumption behaviours

<p>Data was collected with questionnaire-based research carried out in Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Spain as part of a European project. The survey questions were designed to obtain the Willingness to pay using 2 different methodologies the discrete choice experiment and the open-end choice experiment. The survey also included questions about consumers environmental attitudes, and consumption behavior (purchase, use and recycling), to identify if them have influence on preferences towards more sustainable food products. The 3 analyzed food products were pork meat, milk and bread, all of them obtained through different agricultural production systems (circular, conventional, and organic agriculture). The sample was stratified in terms of gender and age to be representative to the average population in each country. Furthermore, respondents included in this study were those that are mainly, or in part responsible for the household food shopping. The questionnaire was translated to the languages of the countries involved in the data collection and pre-launched using a pilot sample of 50 consumers in each case study country. &nbsp;Finally, a total of 5,362 validated questionnaires were obtained. Data was collected online using the Qualtrics market research company, and Net panel market company for Hungary from June 2021 to January 2022.</p>

Trophic cascade driven by behavioural fine-tuning as naïve prey rapidly adjust to a novel predator

<p>The arrival of novel predators can trigger trophic cascades driven by shifts in prey numbers. Predators also elicit behavioural change in prey populations, via phenotypic plasticity and/or rapid evolution, and such changes may also contribute to trophic cascades. Here we document rapid demographic and behavioural changes in populations of a prey species (grassland melomys <em>Melomys burtoni</em>, a granivorous rodent) following the introduction of a novel marsupial predator (northern quoll <em>Dasyurus hallucatus</em>). Within months of quolls appearing, populations of melomys exhibited reduced survival and population declines relative to control populations. Quoll-invaded populations (<em>n </em>= 4) were also significantly shyer than nearby, quoll-free populations (<em>n </em>= 3) of conspecifics. This rapid but generalised response to a novel threat was replaced over the following two years with more threat-specific antipredator behaviours (i.e. predator-scent aversion). Predator-exposed populations, however, remained more neophobic than predator-free populations throughout the study. These behavioural responses manifested rapidly in changed rates of seed predation by melomys across treatments. Quoll-invaded melomys populations exhibited lower per-capita seed take rates, and rapidly developed an&nbsp;avoidance of seeds associated with quoll scent, with discrimination playing out over a spatial scale of tens of metres. Presumably the significant and novel predation pressure induced by quolls drove melomys populations to fine-tune behavioural responses to be more predator-specific through time. These behavioural shifts could reflect individual plasticity (phenotypic flexibility) in behaviour or may be adaptive shifts from natural selection imposed by quoll predation. Our study provides a rare insight into the rapid ecological and behavioural shifts enacted by prey to mitigate the impacts of a novel predator and shows that trophic cascades can be strongly influenced by behavioural as well as numerical responses.</p>
