Data from: Native shade trees aid bird conservation in tea plantations in southern India

<p>In the Western Ghats, India, we study how different intensities of tea cultivation influence birds. We compared bird communities in conventional monoculture tea and mixed-shade tea plantations, both of which use agrochemicals, with organic tea plantations, a rainforest fragment, and continuous rainforest within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. In 225 point count surveys, overall bird species richness and abundance were lowest in conventional tea and up to 33% higher in organic tea. Mixed-shade tea had 40% higher species richness (including 15 canopy and 4 shrub and mid-storey species – primarily frugivores, nectarivores and insectivores), and 83% higher bird abundance than conventional tea, with a greater proportion of forest-affiliated birds and similarity in species composition with forest sites. The rainforest fragment and continuous rainforest had a higher proportion, richness and abundance of forest-affiliated birds and fewer open-country birds, unlike tea plantations where the pattern was reversed. Habitat associations of 62 bird species in indicator species analysis revealed similar patterns. Thus organic tea is better than conventional tea for birds, but mixed-shade tea is even better, although still poorer than forests. Retaining or promoting native shade trees in tea plantations will increase bird diversity and abundance, including of forest-affiliated species and support landscape-level bird conservation.</p>

Effects of Habitat Structure and Adjacent Habitats on Birds in Tropical Rainforest Fragments and Shaded Plantations in the Western Ghats, India. <em>Biodiversity and Conservation</em> 15: 1577–1607. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10531-005-2352-5</p> <p><strong>Abstract: </strong>As large nature reserves occupy only a fraction of the earth's land surface, conservation biologists are critically examining the role of private lands, habitat fragments, and plantations for conservation. This study in a biodiversity hotspot and endemic bird area, the Western Ghats mountains of India, examined the effects of habitat structure, floristics, and adjacent habitats on bird communities in shade-coffee and cardamom plantations and tropical rainforest fragments. Habitat and birds were sampled in 13 sites: six fragments (three relatively isolated and three with canopy connectivity with adjoining shade-coffee plantations and forests), six plantations differing in canopy tree species composition (five coffee and one cardamom), and one undisturbed primary rainforest control site in the Anamalai hills. Around 3300 detections of 6000 individual birds belonging to 106 species were obtained. The coffee plantations were poorer than rainforest in rainforest bird species, particularly endemic species, but the rustic cardamom plantation with diverse, native rainforest shade trees, had bird species richness and abundance comparable to primary rainforest. Plantations and fragments that adjoined habitats providing greater tree canopy connectivity supported more rainforest and fewer open-forest bird species and individuals than sites that lacked such connectivity. These effects were mediated by strong positive effects of vegetation structure, particularly woody plant variables, cane, and bamboo, on bird community structure. Bird community composition was however positively correlated only to floristic (tree species) composition of sites. The maintenance or restoration of habitat structure and (shade) tree species composition in shade-coffee and cardamom plantations and rainforest fragments can aid in rainforest bird conservation in the regional landscape.</p>

<p>The Nature Mates Nature Club has released a dataset entitled "Avian diversity study (water birds) of Kamarganti Bheries, Haroa, North 24 parganas, West Bengal, India during winter season"&nbsp;</p> <p>Bheries are the type of fisheries generally practiced in low land impounded with earthen embankments all round.</p> <p>The age-old bheri-culture has emerged in North 24 Parganas District in its south and eastern skirts centering the lower course of the Bidyadhari River. Salinity in bheri-water is sourced from brackish sea-water entered through rivers and canals..</p> <p>The district has 22 community development (CD) blocks, though brackish water bheri fishery is usually found to exist in its 13 blocks in the south and eastern skirts.</p> <p>This dataset is concerned with one such area, Kamarganti,Haroa,North 24 Parganas.</p> <p>A list of all the birds identified during a biodiversity survey carried out in the year 2023 is included in the dataset. During the survey Red Necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) &nbsp;was recorded which is a very rare bird in West Bengal.</p> <p>Species or genus-level identifications have been made for every species. Data from: Deciduous forests hold conservation value for birds within South Andaman Island, India

<p>We assessed the importance of deciduous and evergreen habitats for forest birds (including several endemic and threatened species) within South Andaman Island, India. To this end, we compared the composition and diversity (taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic) of forest birds across the two habitat types, and evaluted species-specific responses to habitat variables within the island.</p> <p>The dataset collected and R codes used in this study are published here. Bird species traits were sourced from Tobias et al. (2022) and Wilman et al. (2014).
