Dataset of "Electronic structure and defect states in bismuth and antimony sulphides identified by energy-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy"

Understanding the nature of the defects in the absorber materials, namely point defects, their formation mechanism and the contribution to the properties is essential for the photovoltaic device performance improvement. They are one the reasons why chalcogenide-based solar cells do not yet meet expected high power conversion efficiencies. Here we identify and present energy distribution of defects in Bi2S3 and Sb2S3, and their (SbxBi(100-x))2S3 alloys (with x = 0, 10, 33, 50, 67, 90, 100 at% Sb content) chalcogenides, being explored for emerging photovoltaic applications as they are earth-abundant and highly absorbing in the visible light range. We show that their density of states (DOS) and related parameters can be obtained experimentally by energy-resolved electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ER-EIS) in a technically simple and quick way, where ER-EIS data are well correlated with theoretical DFT calculations. ER-EIS reveals that in Bi2S3 there are only shallow defects at CBM. In Sb2S3, ER-EIS reveals also midgap states which can be the cause of low electrical conductivity of Sb2S3. We also explain the discrepancy in the reported values of ionisation potentials and the bandgaps of the Bi- and Sb-chalcogenides. Dominant sulphur vacancy defect was identified in Bi- and Sb-chalcogenides whereas in ternary (SbxBi(100-x))2S3 system, merely 10 at.% of Bi transforms the midgap sulphur defects to shallow ones. This provides novel strategy for healing the midgap defects in Sb2S3, which is crucial for boosting the PV performance and tuning the electrical conductivity in Sb2S3.

Exceptional electronic transport and quantum oscillations in thin bismuth crystals grown inside van der Waals materials

<p>Confining materials to two-dimensional forms changes the behavior of electrons and enables new devices. However, most materials are challenging to produce as uniform thin crystals. Here, we present a synthesis approach where thin crystals are grown in a nanoscale mold defined by atomically-flat van der Waals (vdW) materials. By heating and compressing bismuth in a vdW-mold made of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), we grow ultraflat bismuth crystals less than 10 nanometers thick. Due to quantum confinement, the bismuth bulk states are gapped, isolating intrinsic Rashba surface states for transport studies. The vdW-molded bismuth shows exceptional electronic transport, enabling the observation of Shubnikov&ndash;de Haas quantum oscillations originating from the (111) surface state Landau levels. By measuring the gate-dependent magnetoresistance, we observe multi-carrier quantum oscillations and Landau level splitting, with features originating from both the top and bottom surfaces. Our vdW-mold growth technique establishes a platform for electronic studies and control of bismuth&rsquo;s Rashba surface states and topological boundary modes. Beyond bismuth, the vdW-molding approach provides a low-cost way to synthesize ultrathin crystals and directly integrate them into a vdW heterostructure.&nbsp;</p>

Characterisation of corrosion damage in T91/F91 steel exposed to static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic at 700-715 °C

<p>ABSTRACT:&nbsp;T91 samples were exposed to static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 700-715 &deg;C for 250-500 h in either an oxidising or reducing environment. Corrosion damage was characterised using electron microscopy techniques, which identified networks of LBE intrusion beneath LBE-wetted surfaces. Under reducing conditions these networks are uniformly distributed, while they appear patchier and deeper under oxidising conditions. The individual intrusions preferentially follow microstructural features, initially along prior-austenite grain boundaries, followed by penetration down martensite lath boundaries. Local depletion of Cr was observed within 4 &mu;m of LBE intrusions and along intersecting boundaries, suggesting local Cr dissolution as the main corrosion mechanism.</p>

Synthesis of Bi2S3 thin films based on pulse-plating bismuth nanocrystallines and its photoelectrochemical properties

<p>The solubility of Bi<sup>3+</sup> in aqueous solution is an important factor that limits the fabrication of high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films. In order to find a low–cost method to manufacture high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, we are reporting the preparation of the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films based on pulse-plating method in this paper for the first time. The nano-bismuth particles were obtained by electroplating on fluorine doped SnO<sub>2</sub> (FTO) coated conducting glass substrates with saturated bismuth potassium citrate solution as the electroplating bath, and then it was put into a muffle furnace to oxidize. Finally, the thin films depositing on FTO glass substrates were put into the thioacetamide solution for vulcanization. In the end, the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films were successfully prepared on FTO glass substrates. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the structure, morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared thin films. The test results revealed that we used this method can synthesize the high quality of Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, thus the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> materials synthesized through this method are promising candidates in photoelectrochemical application.</p>

Synthesis of Bismuth Oxyhalide (BiOBrzI(1-z)) Solid Solutions for Photodegradation of Methylene Dye

<p>BiOBr<sub>z</sub>I<sub>(1-z)</sub> (0 &le; z &le; 1) materials were successfully prepared through hydrothermal method. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to determine the surface area, microstructure, crystal structure, and morphology of the resultant products. The photocatalytic performance of BiOBr<sub>z</sub>I<sub>(1-z)</sub> materials was examined through methylene blue (MB) degradation under ultraviolet (UV) light and solar irradiation. The XRD shows that BiOBr<sub>z</sub>I<sub>(1-z) </sub>materials crystallized into a tetragonal crystal structure with (102) peak slightly shifting to lower diffraction angle with increase in the amount of iodide (I<sup>-</sup>). BiOBr<sub>0.6</sub>I<sub>0.4 </sub>materials showed a point of zero charge of 5.29 and presented the highest photocatalytic activity in the removal of MB with 99 and 88% efficiency under solar and UV irradiation, respectively. The kinetics studies of MB removal by BiOBr<sub>z</sub>I<sub>(1-z) </sub>materials shows that the degradation process followed nonlinear pseudo-first-order model indicating that the removal of MB depends on the population of the adsorption sites. Trapping experiments confirmed that photogenerated holes (h<sup>+</sup>) and superoxide radicals (<sup>&bull;</sup>O<sub>2</sub><sup>&minus;</sup>) are the key species responsible for the degradation of MB. The experimental results agree with nonlinear fitting.</p>
