Song capturing lived-experiences of flooding and climate resilience with St. Eugenes Choir Newtownstewart (BluePrint project)

<p>This audio piece represents one of the creative risk communication outputs co-created within the BluePrint project. Between March and October 2024, socially engaged artist Sara Walmsley worked creatively with flood-affected community representatives in Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone and Eglinton, Co. Derry-Londonderry exploring their lived-experiences of flooding and need for climate adaptation and resilience.&nbsp;</p> <p>In the audio piece, you will hear the melodic, polyphonic harmonies of St. Eugene&rsquo;s Church choir (Newtownstewart) as they give music to the words of members of their community whose homes were destroyed and lives endangered by flood water. The piece captures the voices of those striving to adapt to our changing climate, those who are responding to the urgency by finding solace, hope, strength and courage in the unending and unsurprising resilience and creativity of our communities.&nbsp;</p> <p>The BluePrint project is led by the MaREI Centre, University College Cork, with partners the Playhouse, Derry City and Strabane District Council, and Mayo County Council. The BluePrint project is a recipient of the&nbsp;Creative Climate Action fund, an initiative from the Creative Ireland Programme. Extract from BluePrint sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest"

<p>This audio piece is a 3 minute extract of the sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest" (17 minutes in total) co-created by artist Sara Walmsley and the participants of the BluePrint project. This poetic reflection, which includes sonification of historic and predicted rainfall data*, draws on the lived experience of two communities who, in having to deal with the realities of flooding, are already learning to live with the impacts of climate change.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;Developed over 8 months (March to October 2024) of collaborative creative workshops and individual ethnographic interviews, this piece weaves together the voices and sounds that tell the stories of two devastating flood events that affected the people and places of Eglinton and Newtownstewart in 2017 and 2022. &nbsp;</p> <p>Within this extract of the sound installation you will hear the melodic, polyphonic harmonies of St. Eugene&rsquo;s Church choir as they give music to the words of members of their community whose homes were destroyed and lives endangered by flood water. A play, performed by the Visible, Invisible and Self, takes us on a narrative journey through a community which saw their joyful totems of leisure and togetherness tumbled and sodden by a beloved natural element turned wild. A poem, written and performed by those who witnessed the rolling in of a sudden and unexpected storm, represents the voices of the key actors in a devastating event - the flooding victims, the community responders, and the river itself. Finally, we hear throughout the voices of those striving to adapt to our changing climate, those who are responding to the urgency by finding solace, hope, strength and courage in the unending and unsurprising resilience and creativity of our communities.</p> <p>Listeners are invited to remember that as they sit and experience this sound piece, that this is not a piece of art born from an imagined, dystopian future. The events described and represented all happened to real people and real places. As our climate changes at a rapidly accelerating rate, the island of Ireland is particularly vulnerable to an increased frequency of devastating flood events. While this project and this piece of art have aimed to highlight and celebrate the shining threads of hope, inspiration and creativity our communities have shown in meeting the challenges posed by climate change, a note of alarm and urgency has also been sounded. And so, we invite you not just to listen, but to act and demand change that will protect our climate into the future.&nbsp;</p> <p>*<em>Featuring the sonification of monthly average rainfall observation data (1836 &ndash; 1924) for County Derry-Londonderry and County Tryone accessed via UK Met Office, and for Derry City and Strabane District and Ireland, monthly average rainfall observations (1976- 2005) and projections (2021 &ndash; 2100) for the high emission (RCP 8.5) climate scenario accessed via Met Eireann/ Translate project.</em></p> <p>The BluePrint project is led by the MaREI Centre, University College Cork, with partners the Playhouse, Derry City and Strabane District Council, and Mayo County Council. To a charismatic rescue: Designing a blueprint to steer fishing cat conservation for safeguarding Indian wetlands

<p>Wetland conservation in the Indo-tropics can benefit from the protection of the charismatic Fishing Cat. India, supporting ∼ 40% of its known range, is a stronghold for the species. Here, using multiple information sources we outline a framework to safeguard fishing cats in India. Specifically, we a) estimated district-level Conservation priority scores (using presence records, and habitat suitability and habitat connectivity) to identify ecologically important habitats, b) estimated state-level Conservation likelihood scores assessing the success potential of any conservation intervention, c) collated district-level Conservation initiative information identifying ongoing efforts for species and/or habitat conservation. We consecutively assessed the spatial congruence between (a), (b) and (c) to delineate species' conservation areas and corresponding action goals (blueprint). Using information on habitat suitability, we also delineated survey landscapes. Although Fishing Cat records were found in 12 Indian states, only a small proportion of the state area was identified harbouring optimal habitat for the species. Three broad habitat clusters - Terai arc, Eastern coast, and Brahmaputra floodplains - were identified, with overall high habitat connectivity. Most districts ranking high in Conservation priority scored low in Conservation likelihood. Districts with Fishing Cat presence (n = 60) were delineated into four tiers of action landscapes and the majority of districts classified as survey landscapes (n = 156) were found in the Terai arc. We use our results to recommend and discuss conservation actions for districts identified in our blueprint. Flagship species conservation approach has substantial potential to enrich wetland conservation, for which our blueprint can act as a baseline.</p>

A blueprint for securing Brazil's marine biodiversity and supporting the achievement of global conservation goals

<p><strong>Aim: </strong>As a step towards providing support for an ecological approach to strengthening marine protected areas (MPAs) and meeting international commitments, this study combines cumulative impact assessment and conservation planning approach to undertake a large-scale spatial prioritisation.</p> <p><strong>Location: </strong>Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Brazil, Southwest Atlantic Ocean</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We developed a prioritisation approach to protecting different habitat types, threatened species ranges, and ecological connectivity, while also mitigating the impacts of multiple threats on biodiversity. When identifying priorities for conservation, we accounted for the co-occurrence of 24 human threats and the distribution of 161 marine habitats and 143 threatened species, as well as their associated vulnerabilities. Additionally, we compared our conservation priorities with MPAs proposed by local stakeholders.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We show that impacts to habitats and species are widespread and identify hotspots of cumulative impacts on inshore and offshore areas. Industrial fisheries, climate change, and land-based activities were the most severe threats to biodiversity. The highest priorities were mostly found towards the coast due to the high cumulative impacts found in nearshore areas. As expected, our systematic approach showed a better performance on selecting priority sites when compared to the MPAs proposed by local stakeholders without a typical conservation planning exercise, increasing the existing coverage of MPAs by only 7.9%. However, we found that proposed MPAs still provide some opportunities to protect areas facing high levels of threats.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions: </strong>The study presents a blueprint of how to embrace a comprehensive ecological approach when identifying strategic priorities for conservation. We advocate protecting these crucial areas from degradation in emerging conservation efforts is key to maintain their biodiversity value.</p>
