Photonics4All Bookmark UV Light (German)

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

How UV light can fight Ebola?

UV light has been used for decades to disinfect air and water. Some parts of UV light are dangerous for our skin, but if well-managed UV is safe to use.
Recently, new types of light sources are producing UV light powers 25,000 times more intense than produced by the sun. These new light sources make it faster to kill a wider range of germs, and light is currently being used to eradicate the Ebola virus on both medical instruments and furniture in some hospitals.
All thanks to the progress in Photonics.

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

Do cells have colors?

These photos are taken by fluorescence microscope. Fluorescent matter will emit light when absorbing light with lower wavelength. Scientists make them into fluorescent stains, which can attach to the molecules in the cells. In this way, specific structures in the cells can be highlighted, and colorful photos are made. In 2014, "the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy" also received the Nobel Prize of Chemistry. In the future we will be able to understand the complicated running mechanism of the cells and maybe solve the puzzle of life.
All thanks to the progress of Photonics!

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

How can light help improve students' grades?

In a continent like Africa, night time comes early. For many families with no access to electricity, it means the end of access to light or the use of dangerous kerosene lamps. Thanks to photonics, cheap, portable, rechargeable lights can be provided to kids so they can continue their homework even when the sun has gone down. Families can recharge the lights during the day using in-built solar panels, and these lights can provide up to 4 hours of light and help students improve their grades at school.
All thanks to progress in Photonics.

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

Do you know how the metal pieces of your car have been welded?

Nails and rivets are long gone! Today we use lasers to join multiple pieces of metal with different types of surfaces - curved or straight. Using lasers to cut and weld is cheaper, safer and faster than older techniques and lasers can be easily controlled by robots for high accuracy and high throughput.
New powerful lasers can also be used to cut different materials such as plastics, ceramics and metals. The emergence of new types of lasers made it possible.
All thanks to the progress in Photonics!

Unfortunately time has erased the colours from the stone - at least to our eyes. Light spectroscopy techniques however, can analyse very tiny amounts of pigment still present in the building materials to discover the original colour decoration.
Then, with the help of powerful projectors and lasers, we can project images directly onto the walls building to reproduce their original colours. This amazing technique can give us the feeling that we are seeing the cathedral as it was designed a thousand years ago.
All thanks to the progress of Photonics!

Shorter wavelengths - such as blue light - scatter more - which is why the sky appears blue. The light from red light appears brighter from further away than other colours would. Our eyes are also more sensitive in the dark to the colour red than any other colour - which is why brake lights are coloured red.
Nowadays, LEDs are replacing old light bulbs, bringing better lighting, better energy efficiency and more design freedom to our cars.
All thanks to progress with Photonics.

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4all is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

How many Blu-Ray movies can you download through one fibre optic cable?

300 movies per second! Submarine communications cables which are laid on the sea bed between land-based stations carry telecommunication signals across the globe underwater. These cables can have total lengths of over 21,000 km and have a capacity of 10 Terabits per second (Tb/s). The information is carried by flashing laser light using a Morse-code like signal through the optical fibre. Nowadays the fibre optic comes straight into our homes to deliver on-line video and TV programmes with fantastic (4K) resolution.

In the future, new types of optical switches (rather than electronic switches) made with a recently discovered material graphene will enable 1000 times faster connections.

All thanks to progress with Photonics!

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

How can light replace a needle?

We no longer need to use a needle to monitor the level of oxygen in your blood! We can use light emitting diodes (LEDs) attached to the top of your finger - and a light detector underneath to measure the amount of light passing through your finger. As Hemoglobin - the proteins in red blood cells which carry oxygen - absorbs light we can determine whether you have enough oxygen in your blood. More advanced devices can also monitor your heart-rate and blood pressure. We'll even be using light to measure your blood-sugar level in the future. All thanks to Photonics!

Light is used by forensic detectives to help locate evidence such as latent fingerprints, bodily fluids, hair and fibres, bruises, wound patterns, shoe and foot imprints, gunshot residues or drug traces. All of these clues fluoresce - or glow brightly - under selectively coloured light. Photography is also vital to help collect and store this evidence.

All thanks to Photonics!

Recent developments in photolithography where light is used to control where conductive metal is placed on the chips - have enabled us to put more transistors than there are people on earth! Transistors are responsible for controlling the path of electricity/information through a chip. These technological developments have led to improving the speed, size and energy consumption of our chips, making them smaller and more efficient.

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

Why do soap bubbles have colour?

Light reflects off both the inner and outer surfaces of a soap bubble. As the bubble dries out it changes thickness and the light waves reflecting off both surfaces have to travel different distances. White light is made up of all different colours – or waves of different lengths and - when light waves meet – or overlap - they create different colours. Because reflected light travels different distances due to the different film thicknesses we see iridescence in soap bubbles. This phenomenon is used in photonics to provide anti-reflection coating on your glasses for example.
