Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorbance from lagoon, ocean, and river sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2021-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples from multiple depths are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods, filtered, and analyzed for light absorption spectra within 24 hours of collection. Wavelength-specific light absorption coefficients are reported between 250 and 600 nanometers. The data is organized in "long" or "tidy" format, with columns of station, date, wavelength, and absorption. Please see included MakeColumnsAsWavelengths.R, MakeColumnsAsDates.R, and ReshapeDataInExcel.txt for some common ways to reorganize the table for further CDOM analysis. In 2022, data from 2019 were removed due to quality issues (please see revision 1 of this dataset for 2019 CDOM values). For users who may have used 2019 data from this dataset, there are additional files to inform decisions going forward. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2019_sample_flags.csv" lists which 2019 samples are entirely unreliable, versus usable with caution. "BLE_LTER_CDOM_2021_blank_mean_sd_absorptions.csv" lists mean and standard deviations at each wavelength from all blanks taken in 2021; this is meant to give info on the instruments used and will not be updated further. Please see the methods section for more information on 2019 data.

Examination of protein-like fluorophores in chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in a wetland and coastal environment for the wet and dry seasons of the years 2002 and 2003 (FCE)

Water samples are collected at the end of the dry and the wet season from all LTER sites and stored on ice until return to the lab. They are pre-filtered through pre-combusted GF/F filters and ultrafiltered and concentrated with a Pellicon 2 Mini tangential flow ultrafiltration system.Concentrated samples were then analyzed using fluorescence and SEC-HPLC. This CDOM optical study revealed the presence of two classes of compounds associated with the protein-like peak (peak T; excitation/emission (Ex/Em) maxima at around 280 nm/325 nm), which have very different chemical structures and ecological roles. In addition to proteins, we propose phenolic compounds as possible origins of peak T in coastal and wetland environments. In this study, natural water samples were obtained from subtropical rivers and estuarine environments within the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) ecosystem. The samples were ultra-filtered and excitation-emission fluorescence matrices (EEMs) were obtained. The EEMs showed the presence of four peaks with Ex/Em maxima at around 280 nm/325 nm (T), less than 260 nm/460 nm (A), 300 nm/412nm (M), and 350 nm/470 nm (C). To better understand the nature of peak T, the components originating this peak were separated using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and detected by fluorescence emission at Ex/Em = 280 nm/325 nm. The elution curves revealed the presence of two elution peaks at a molecular weight of greater than 50K (void volume; T1) and around 7.6K (T2). This result suggested the need of cautious interpretation in the use of peak T as a proxy for the detection of proteinaceous materials in wetland and estuarine environments, since significant amounts of potentially interfering phenolic compounds are leached from senescent biomass in wetland and coastal ecosystems. As such EEM spectra of gallic acid an important component of hydrolysable tannins, and condensed tannins extracted from red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) showed the presence of a peak maxima

The instrument uses excitation at 405 and 510 nm to measures passively the fluorescence of chlorophyll-a (Chl), three different phycoerythrins (PE1, PE2 and PE3) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) is measured actively using pump-during-probe (PDP) measurements of Chl a fluorescence induction. Fluorescence measurements are normalized to the water’s Raman fluorescence. ALF data are merged with CTD and bottle data that were collected by the CalCOFI group.

CDOM spectral slope (S275-295) as tracers of water masses, CDOM heterogeneity, and 14C-DOC in an oligotrophic marginal sea

<p>The present study is focused on the CDOM vertical profiles in the northern South China Sea. The results suggest humic-like FDOM is controlling the variation of the spectral slope of CDOM (<em>S</em><sub>275-295</sub>). In addition, our results suggest&nbsp;<em>S</em><sub>275-295</sub>&nbsp;could be used as tracers of water mass, CDOM diversity and radiocarbon age of dissolved organic carbon in oligotrophic ocean.</p>

MERIS FRS L2 CDOM absorption monthly climatology Western Baltic Sea

<p>MERIS FRS L2 (full resolution level 2) product from 2003 to 2012 was used to create a monthly climatology of CDOM absorption for the Western Baltic Sea region. The MERIS FRS L2 product was processed with the C2RCC algorithm (Doerffer and Schiller, 2007) which has been trained with data-sets from European coastal waters. Full details of the post processing of the MERIS data into a climatology can be found in R&ouml;hrenbach (Bachelor Thesis, 2019). A monthly climatology for the complete time frame of the MERIS archive was created and includes the mean value, standard deviation and number of observations for each point.</p>

Advanced Laser Fluorescence (ALF) measurements of chlorophyll-a (Chl), phycoerythrin (PE), chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM), and variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) from CCE process cruises in the California Current System, 2006 - 2012.

The Advanced Laser Fluorometry (ALF) provides spectral deconvolution (SDC) analysis of the laser-stimulated emission (LSE) excited at 405 or 532/510 nm for assessment of chlorophyll a, phycoerythrin, and chromophoric dissolved organic matter. Three spectral types of phycoerythrin are discriminated for characterization of cyanobacteria and cryptophytes in mixed phototrophic populations. The SDC analysis is integrated with measurements of variable fluorescence, Fv/Fm, corrected for the SDC-retrieved background fluorescence, BNC, for improved photophysiological assessments of phytoplankton photochemical efficiency. Fluorescence measurements are normalized to the water Raman scattering to improve the accuracy of measurements. The ALF measurements of discrete water samples from various depths were made using several ALF instrument modifications (ALF-1, ALF-T, Aquatic Laser Fluorescence Analyzer (ALFA) , or Custom Laser Analytical Spectroscopic System (CLASS)) during CCE process cruises.
