CESSDA Webinar: Data Discovery
<p><strong><em>Recording from CESSDA Webinar on Data Discovery</em></strong></p> <p>Data discovery is a crucial stage in the research process, especially in the social sciences and humanities as many valuable studies have originated from secondary data.</p> <p>Speakers from the Czech Social Science Data Archive (<a href="https://www.cessda.eu/About/Consortium/CESSDA-Countries/CESSDA-Members/Czech-Republic">CSDA</a>), Johana Chylíková and Martin Vávra, took participants on a tour through five core elements of the discovery process. These elements are 1) identification of the purpose of the specific data use intended, 2) finding an appropriate data resource, 3) setting up a search query, 4) selecting the data and finally 5) evaluation of the data quality.</p> <p>The guest speaker, sociologist Kristýna Bašná from the Institute of Sociology, Czech Academy of Sciences, presented her personal experience with discovering data in the context of her research on civic culture and democracy.</p>

<p>Panel discussion webinar, where data protection experts from across Europe gave their views on what changes the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) brought for research, data archiving and data sharing and how researchers and institutions have implemented the GDPR.</p> <p>One year since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), what changes did it bring for research, data archiving and data sharing? How have researchers and institutions implemented the GDPR? Are there differences between countries? Are you as a researcher confused about how to apply the GDPR in practice in your research? And how is the GDPR applied in practice in cross-national collaborative projects?</p> <p>A panel of data protection specialists from the CESSDA network shared their experiences with the GDPR implementation, pointed to practical guidance, and answered questions. </p>

<p>Dr. Kristi Winters (GESIS) and Janek Bruker (formerly of GESIS) discuss social science variable harmonization and harmonized data documentation practices.
