Sun compass neurons are tuned to migratory orientation in monarch butterflies
Every autumn, monarch butterflies migrate from North America to their overwintering sites in Central Mexico. To maintain their southward direction, these butterflies rely on celestial cues as orientation references. The position of the sun combined with additional skylight cues are integrated in the central complex, a region in the butterfly's brain that acts as an internal compass. However, the central complex does not solely guide the butterflies on their migration but helps monarchs in their non-migratory form manoeuvre on foraging trips through their habitat. By comparing the activity of input neurons of the central complex between migratory and non-migratory butterflies, we investigated how a different lifestyle affects the coding of orientation information in the brain. During recording, we presented the animals with different simulated celestial cues and found that the encoding of the sun was narrower in migratory compared to non-migratory butterflies. This feature might reflect the need of the migratory monarchs to rely on a precise sun compass to keep their direction during their journey. Taken together, our study sheds light on the neural coding of celestial cues and provides insights into how a compass is adapted in migratory animals to successfully steer them to their destination.

C-COMPASS Example Data
<p><strong>Example Proteomics Dataset for C-COMPASS</strong></p> <p>This dataset is a simulated example of proteomics dataset containing 8 compartments across 16 fractions over 3 replicates for 2 conditions, including relocalizations. The data is simulated to be highly comparable to a real spatial proteomics dataset based on gradient fractionation, and contains controlled random variations and noises that mimic real experimental variation.</p> <p>The purpose of this dataset is, to test or validate C-COMPASS, or to have a prepared session that helps handling the GUI of C-COMPASS.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>sim_08_16_FractionationData.txt:</strong><br>Simulated fractionation dataset for the above mentioned dataset. It can be imported to C-COMPASS for spatial proteomics analysis.</p> <p><strong>sim_08_16_MarkerList.txt:</strong><br>Simulated marker list, fitting to the above mentioned fractionation dataset. Design and implementation of a brief digital mindfulness and compassion training app for health care professionals: cluster randomized controlled trial
<p><strong>Background: </strong>Several studies show that intense work schedules make health care professionals particularly vulnerable to emotional exhaustion and burnout.</p> <p><strong>Objective:</strong> In this scenario, promoting self-compassion and mindfulness may be beneficial for well-being. Notably, scalable, digital app–based methods may have the potential to enhance self-compassion and mindfulness in health care professionals.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>In this study, we designed and implemented a scalable, digital app–based, brief mindfulness and compassion training program called "WellMind" for health care professionals. A total of 22 adult participants completed up to 60 sessions of WellMind training, 5-10 minutes in duration each, over 3 months. Participants completed behavioral assessments measuring self-compassion and mindfulness at baseline (preintervention), 3 months (postintervention), and 6 months (follow-up). In order to control for practice effects on the repeat assessments and calculate effect sizes, we also studied a no-contact control group of 21 health care professionals who only completed the repeated assessments but were not provided any training. Additionally, we evaluated preand postintervention neural activity in core brain networks using electroencephalography source imaging as an objective<br>neurophysiological training outcome.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> Findings showed a post- versus preintervention increase in self-compassion (Cohen d=0.57; P=.007) and state-mindfulness (d=0.52; P=.02) only in the WellMind training group, with improvements in self-compassion sustained at follow-up (d=0.8; P=.01). Additionally, WellMind training durations correlated with the magnitude of improvement in self-compassion across human participants (ρ=0.52; P=.01). Training-related neurophysiological results revealed plasticity specific to the default mode network (DMN) that is implicated in mind-wandering and rumination, with DMN network suppression selectively observed at the postintervention time point in the WellMind group (d=–0.87; P=.03). We also found that improvement in self-compassion was directly related to the extent of DMN suppression (ρ=–0.368; P=.04).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Overall, promising behavioral and neurophysiological findings from this first study demonstrate the benefits of brief digital mindfulness and compassion training for health care professionals and compel the scale-up of the digital intervention.</p>

Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction among Registered Nurses Caring for Cancer Patients: An Explorative Survey
<p>Compassion fatigue is a complex phenomenon, increasingly studied by health services. In addition to the analysis of the phenomenon, studies also consider the factors that influence the satisfaction deriving from nursing work, characterized by the compassion inherent in the relationship with the patient, in addition to the associated fatigue and the consequent risk of Burnout. . The aim of this study, conducted at the IOV - Veneto Oncology Institute in Padua, is to describe Compassion Fatigue and Compassion Satisfaction in nurses working in oncology, where the work requires a strong degree of sensitivity. An exploratory cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of nurses from homogeneous medical and surgical areas who work with cancer patients. A validated Italian version of the Professional Quality of Life Scale: Compassion Satisfaction and Fatigue was applied. Socio-demographic and professional classification variables were also recorded.</p> <p> </p>

Six-month stability of individual differences in sports coaches' burnout, self-compassion and social support
<p>Using a three-wave prospective cross-lagged panel design, the study examined the six-month stability of burnout, self-compassion, and social support among sports coaches in terms of measurement invariance, mean-level change, rank-order stability, and structural stability. The participating coaches (<em>N</em> = 422; <em>M<sub>age</sub></em> = 44.48, <em>SD</em> = 11.03) completed an online questionnaire measuring self-compassion, social support, coach burnout, and demographics at baseline and two follow-ups at three months and six months. The various forms of stability were assessed using structural equation modeling. There was no significant mean-level change in burnout, self-compassion, or social support, and all three constructs exhibited measurement invariance. Rank-order stability remained relatively high, ranging from 0.78 to 0.94 across the three time points. For all three constructs, covariances between latent factors were invariant over time, indicating high structural stability. While self-compassion and social support were positively related, both were negatively related to coach burnout. These results confirm the importance of preventing and addressing symptoms of burnout, low self-compassion, and poor social support in sports settings.</p>
Workplace humor, compassion and professional quality of life among medical staff
<p>The aim of this study is to identify the relation between workplace humor and professional quality of life among medical staff, as well as the moderating role of compassion in this relation. The sample consisted of 189 medical staff (<em>M</em>age = 41.01; <em>SD</em> = 9.58). The results showed that self-enhancing and affiliative humor are positively related, while self-defeating humor is negatively related to compassion satisfaction. Burnout and secondary traumatic stress are negatively related to self-enhancing humor and positively related to self-defeating humor. Compassion moderates the relationship between affiliate humor and secondary traumatic stress. The practical implications of these results are discussed. </p>
