Simulated radio maps for CAESAR source finder testing

A dataset of simulated astronomical radio maps (fits format, size 2500 x 2500) with both compact and extended sources that can be used to test automated source extraction algorithms. Maps were produced with the CASA tool as described in S Riggi et al, PASA (2019) to test CAESAR source finding performances. The dataset includes:

- Simulated maps in FITS format ("recmap_vis-RUNXXX.fits")

- List of generated sources in Caesar ROOT format ("sources-RUNXXX.root") and corresponding DS9 regions ("ds9regions-RUNXXX.reg")

- List of generated sources (convolved by the clean beam) in Caesar ROOT format ("sources-RUNXXX_conv_rec.root") and corresponding DS9 regions ("ds9regions_sources-RUNXXX_conv.reg")

Lucius Caesar NCMA

Lucius Caesar from the NC Museum of Art. Sculpture is located in a glass case. The label says "the grandson of Emperor Augustus, Lucius died while still a child. Wearing a fillet on his head in this portrait, Lucius is seen perhaps as a Greek ephebe, or a military student, in preparation for the role he was expected to play as heir to the throne. Customary for depictions of the royal family during the reign of Augustus, the similarity of facial shape and features, even the haircut, to those of Emperor Augustus was intended to reinforce the dynastic connection." Late 1st century BCE, marble Created with Polycam Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Green basanite bust of Germanicus Caesar

Happy Easter! Here's a bit of Christian history... This bust was part of the British Museum's "Egypt: faith after the pharaohs" exhibition and is now back on general display. Egypt, about AD 14–20. "This statue of Germanicus, great-nephew of the emperor Augustus, was probably made around AD 19, shortly after a visit to Egypt. Years later someone inscribed a cross on his forehead and it was hacked across the nose, ear and neck. We don't know why the cross was added – perhaps to neutralise spirits thought to dwell in images, to 'Christianise' Germanicus, or to mark him as a 'slave of God' – as some Christians marked themselves."
