California Department of Fish and Wildlife Adult Sturgeon Study, Sacramento-San Joaquin Watershed, 1954-2022
The Sacramento-San Joaquin Watershed, located in Central and Northern California, drains approximately 43,000 square miles and terminates at the Golden Gate Bridge. This watershed hosts numerous species of ecological, cultural, and recreational importance, including White (Acipenser transmontanus) and Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris). Sturgeon were severely overfished in the late 1800s and early 1900s, prompting a closure of the recreational and commercial sturgeon fishery in 1917 by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG; Now California Department of Fish and Wildlife, CDFW). The fishery remained closed until 1954, when a recreational fishery was once again allowed by the CDFG. A single year of surveying was conducted by the CDFG in 1954 to monitor the new fishery and a semi-regular survey was established in 1967. Since then, CDFW has systematically surveyed subadult and adult White and Green Sturgeon as part of the Adult Sturgeon Study, with annual surveys conducted between 2005 and 2022. Capturing adult sturgeon using 3.7m deep drifted trammel nets in areas including Suisun Bay, Grizzly Bay, and San Pablo Bay, these efforts have been supplemented by angler-contributed data, collected through mail returns and river/bay creel surveys. Tagging practices involve individually coded ½” Petersen-disk tags, with reward values introduced in 1974 to encourage angler cooperation and enhance tag return rate accuracy. The adoption of PIT (Passive Integrated Transponder) tags began in 2007 and has been consistently employed since 2019. These data provide insights into tag return rates, recaptures, and mortalities, supporting the estimation of abundance and harvest rates. This comprehensive dataset enriches our understanding of sturgeon population dynamics and is crucial for monitoring California sturgeon.

Central Valley Chinook Salmon populations differ in their Endangered Species Act listing status. It is often difficult to distinguish individuals from the different Evolutionarily Significant Units. As such, many of the salmon monitoring and evaluation efforts in the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay-Delta are hampered by uncertainty about population (stock) identification and proportional effects of management actions (Dekar et al. 2013; IEP 2019). Studies have identified that the current identification method (length-at-date models) of juvenile Chinook salmon (Fisher 1992) captured in the watershed vary in their accuracy, particularly for spring-run (NMFS 2013; Harvey et al. 2014; Merz et al. 2014). The inaccuracy of the size-based methods is likely due to differences in fish distribution during early rearing, habitat-specific growth rates, and inter-annual variability in temperatures and food availability that lead to overlap in size ranges among stocks. The primary objective of this project was the genetic classification (to race; Evolutionary Significant Unit) of Chinook Salmon captured from State Water Project and Central Valley Project fish protection facilities and Interagency Ecological Program monitoring programs. The population-of-origin was determined for sampled fish by comparing their genotypes to reference genetic baselines. Genetic methods, having less statistical uncertainty that size-based models for population identification, were intended to directly target (and reduce) one source of uncertainty in the estimation of loss (take) from water diversions (operations) and develop the information necessary for understanding stock-specific distribution, habitat utilization, abundance, and life history variation. California Department of Fish and Wildlife Enhanced Large Fish Study, San Francisco Estuary, California, 2023 Gillnet Survey
The Enhanced Large Fish Study (ELFS) was established and included in the Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) work plan in 2023 to fill some of the monitoring gap of fishes in the San Francisco Estuary (SFE), California. The fish monitoring of the IEP prior to ELFS primarily consisted of trawl- and seine-based surveys, which generally capture small and/or juvenile fishes due to survey gear and methodologies. In order to more effectively sample the large/adult fish portion of SFE fish communities, the ELFS uses American Fisheries Society experimental gillnets, plus the inclusion of the optional "large fish panel," to sample the waters of the SFE. The experimental gillnets measure 24.4m in length, 1.8m in depth, and includes eight 3m length panels with stretch mesh measurements of 76.2mm, 114.3mm, 50.8mm, 88.9mm, 38.1mm, 127.0mm, 63.5mm, and 101.6mm. The optional large fish panel measures 9.1m by 1.8m in depth and includes three 3m length panels with stretch mesh measurements of 152.4, 177.8, and 203.2mm. The ELFS conducted its first year of sampling in the North Delta, California, in 2023, and will be expanded to the greater Delta and Suisun Bay and Marsh in future sampling years. The ELFS is currently funded as a special study to inform future monitoring, with funding contracted through fiscal year 2026-2027.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife Adult Striped Bass Study, Sacramento-San Joaquin Watershed, California, 1969-2022
The Adult Striped Bass Study was operated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (previous Department of Fish and Game) between 1969 and 2022. The objective of this study was to generate estimates of adult striped bass harvest and abundance for use in managing the striped bass recreational fishery and tracking impacts of water management on the striped bass population. Striped bass and other species were captured using 20' length by 10' diameter fyke traps and 600' length by 21' depth surface-drift style gillnets with stretched mesh measurements of 4", 4.5", 5", and 5.5". The survey typically operated between April and June, with fyke traps deployed in the Sacramento River and gillnets deployed in the lower Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. A portion of adult or legal-sized striped bass were tagged with external 1/2" Petersen-disk tags for use in mark-recapture analyses. All external tags were individually coded, and a subset were assigned a reward value of 2 to 100 US dollars. Due to the targeted nature of this study, non-striped bass species and untagged striped bass were not recorded prior to 1996. In addition, effort data (aside from sampling day/event) are not available prior to 1994. Due to these and other limitations, the publishing authors recommend caution be exercised when attempting to quantify relative trends in abundance (i.e. CPUE) from these data.
