Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Stream Biology Camera Traps, 2020-2024
This dataset comprises daily images positioned to view streams above the weirs at Hubbard Brook for watersheds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. Cameras are programmed to take one image per day at ~12:00 pm ET. Each file is timestamped with the image metadata, but also within the file name, and structured to enable temporal trend analysis for end-users. The cameras used are BUSHNELL model number 119R3, and data are collected on SIM cards and manually downloaded every six months. Data gaps are minimal and generally associated with battery failures. These data are designed to capture stream dynamics over time for the purpose of visual pattern analysis, environmental monitoring, and machine learning applications. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Hubbard Brook Wildlife Monitoring Project: Assessing wildlife population presence, activity and habitat use through continual camera trap monitoring, 2018
Monitoring of wildlife at Hubbard Brook is essential to understand how these species are responding to forest and environmental condition over time, while also placing those wildlife species in the context of ecosystem structural and functional attributes. The presence and persistence of wildlife species common to an area can indicate suitable habitat conditions as well as refugia for less common species. Changes in species presence and activity, such as fewer to no sightings, may point to shifting conditions not suitable to the species missing from the area. Camera trap monitoring allows for continuous, non-obtrusive observation of many different species of wildlife and can be used as part of our understanding of current suitability of habitat condition. To better understand integrated forest condition, we established a camera trap network located at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of central New Hampshire. The cameras have logged over 1,500 wildlife observations, confirming the presence of many species, including those not previously reported (pine marten and river otter). A total of 15 mammal species have been detected and have also been effective at detecting some bird species, including the Northern Harrier. Natural history observations have provided insight into the lives of the species detected, including reproduction (Bull moose following cow during rut, moose calves, deer fawns), predation (red fox with snow-shoe hare) and presence of parasites (winter ticks on moose with hairless shoulders). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Mammal occurrence data derived from camera traps in grassland-shrubland ecotones at 24 sites in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico, USA, 2014-ongoing
The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how abundance, distribution, and activity of mammals (>= 1 kg) vary across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset includes animal occurrence data derived from camera trap images captured in 24 grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. The data set contains occurrence records from 14 mammal species with the date and time a species was detected. Also included are the number of individuals in a photo, operational dates and number of functional camera days for cameras, total number of trap nights a camera was active, and geographical coordinates of camera trap locations. Sampling is ongoing and occurs during the monsoon season from July-November. Sampling has occurred annually since 2014.
CamTrapAsia: a dataset of tropical forest vertebrate communities from 239 camera trapping studies
<p>Dataset containing data from 239 camera trap studies conducted in tropical Asia. A total of 278,260 independent records were compiled, from 371 distinct species, comprising 232 mammals, 132 birds, and 7 reptiles. The accumulated trapping effort was 876,606 trap nights, distributed among Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal and far-eastern India.</p>

Supporting data for "Estimating animal density for a community of species using information obtained only from camera-traps"
<p>Data underlying a paper published in Methods in Ecology and Evolution (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.13930">https://doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.13930</a>).</p> <p>These data are suitable for estimating animal density using the Random Encounter Model and include: i) detection counts for 35 species across 510 camera-trap locations; ii) movement speeds (estimated by tracking animal movements in camera-trap image sequences), iii) activity times (filtered so that records of the same species at the same location are > 60 minutes apart), and iv) measurements of the angular and radial distance from camera-traps for animals that were detected.</p>
Wildlife in the greater Phoenix, Arizona, USA metropolitan area: results of a camera-trapping project (2019-2020)
The goal of this research project was to evaluate how wildlife populations responded to the gradient of urbanization. We deployed 50 wildlife cameras across the gradient of urbanization from downtown Phoenix to nearby wildland areas from January 2019 to August 2020. We documented a suite of wildlife species, from small mammals and birds to large mammals. Data present whether a species was detected at a site during this time period.
