Soil Carbon and Nitrogen at the Harvard Farm at Harvard Forest since 2015
These data represent baseline soil bulk density and total soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations for the three grazing treatments at Harvard Farm: hay (no grazing), rotational grazing, and intensive grazing. These samples were collected at the beginning of the study, so any differences across plots or treatments are due to inherent soil variability at the site rather than the treatments themselves. These data were collected to establish the starting conditions with which to compare potential treatment effects at later sampling dates.
Soil organic carbon and nutrient dynamics in response to anaerobic digestate application to farm fields, Eastern Iowa, 2011-2023
This dataset documents a long-term, field-scale study of anaerobic digestate application on commercial croplands in eastern Iowa, USA. It includes detailed records of digestate composition, application rates, and timing, as well as soil test results collected over a 12-year period (2011–2023) from 14 agricultural fields. The dataset supports analysis of soil organic carbon (SOC), nutrient dynamics, and isotopic composition in response to digestate inputs. It contains 421 georeferenced soil samples, digestate nutrient profiles, field management histories, and spatial boundaries. The data were collected as part of a collaborative effort between researchers at Iowa State University and Sievers Family Farms to evaluate the agronomic and environmental implications of integrating anaerobic digestion into row crop and livestock systems.
Carbon emissions and economic assessment of farm operations under different tillage practices in organic rainfed almond orchards under semiarid Mediterranean conditions
<p>This dataset corresponds to yield, price and fuel consumption from organic rainfed almond orchards in SE Spain under different diversification and tillage practices. The objective is to carry out an integrated environmental (focused on the CO<sub>2</sub> emissions) and economic assessment of farm operations under different diversification and tillage practices through a cradle-to-farm gate life cycle assessment (LCA) based on these data.</p> <p>These data correspond to the open-access article " Carbon emissions and economic assessment of farm operations under different tillage practices in organic rainfed almond orchards under semiarid Mediterranean conditions" published in Scientia Horticulturae. Above and below ground biomass and carbon content in the most common farm crops in Latvia
<p>Field measurements based assessment of above and below ground biomass of the most common farm crops in Latvia, including carbon and nitrogen stock and CO2 input into soil with plant residues under the most common management systems. Organic and integrated farmings are separated. Biomass is expressed as total biomass of all plants growing in the area, not only main species. Data for less common species are extrapolated assuming similarity with similar species or using default factors provided by the IPCC guidelines and other literature sources.</p> <p>Data area partially published (references are provided in the description). Uncertainty, which is not included in the public data set, can be provided separately.</p>
Initial soil conditions outweigh management in a cool-season dairy farm's carbon sequestration potential
<p>Data used in the manuscript "Initial soil conditions outweigh management in a cool-season dairy farm’s carbon sequestration potential" (<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.152195">10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.152195</a>)</p> <p> </p> <p>Soil samples, gas fluxes, and biomass samples measured at the Organic Dairy Research Farm at the University of New Hampshire. Soil samples were in two sets, a spatially explicit set from 0 - 15 cm depth, and less spatially explicit samples taken at 10 cm increments. Soils were sampled for soil carbon and nitrogen content. Gas fluxes were measured using the chamber method with carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide gases measured on gas chromatographs with the change over time used to measure the gas flux rates. Forage biomass was measured by collecting biomass in 1 m2 plots. Please see the manuscript for more details on sampling.</p>

Simulations for impacts of large-scale Saharan solar farms on the global terrestrial carbon cycle
<p>Four experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of a large scale Saharan solar farm on the global carbon cycle. Here a fully coupled Earth System model (ESM) EC-Earth was used to investigate the impact of a Saharan solar farm on the terrestrial carbon cycle, simulated with prescribed reduced surface albedo approximating the albedo effect of Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels over the Sahara desert. These experiments considered solar panel coverage at 5, 20 or 50% of a region of the Sahara Desert. The dataset contains selected output data from the simulations. Simulations were run for 200 years. The last 60 years were used for analysis after the model reached an equilibrium. </p> <p>The dataset contains Earth system model results from EC-Earth3 presented in the study by Power et al. (2023).</p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Glacier Lakes Ecosystems Experiments Site (GLA) contains number of farms measurements in number units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Data from: Guiding carbon farming using interdisciplinary mixed methods mapping
In recognition of the need to address complex environmental problems, some ecological studies have adopted social research methods to better understand the complexity of social‐ecological systems management. The overwhelming majority of these studies stop short of fully embracing qualitative methodologies. The lack of integrative social and natural science data for a topic such as soil carbon farming is problematic as theoretical carbon sequestration opportunities identified through soil mapping and process‐based models can fail to deliver the sequestration levels promised when introduced on‐the‐ground. Such mapping needs to account for the human factors involved in delivering increased soil carbon on‐farm. Here, we develop a mixed methods mapping approach to explore the potential for increasing soil carbon stocks on upland farms in the UK. Our approach considers ecological and social complexity through application of soil science, ecology, participant observation, interviews and a focus group. Our maps revealed landscapes that are full of carbon farming opportunity, but contain previously hidden barriers to the delivery of increased soil carbon. For example, they revealed that carbon farming can be considered by farmers to work in opposition to perceived 'good farming' practices and be correlated with increased incidents of livestock disease. We also discovered that the use of maps in research can be problematic as they can close down discussion and exclude local representation of an area. Trialling an interdisciplinary mixed methods approach produced new, deeper and more richly‐textured understandings about how soil carbon management is produced socially as well as ecologically on upland livestock farms. Our findings have potential to improve the success of future carbon farming initiatives by incorporating farmer knowledge and social drivers of implementation.
