Research Data Alliance Interest Group Professionalising Data Stewardship Career Tracks Survey Dataset
<p>This is the final dataset resulting from the data steward Career Tracks survey that the Reseach Data Alliance (RDA) Interest Group Professionalising Data Stewardship carried out in 2022. Data stewards were defined as professionals who aim at guaranteeing that data is appropriately treated in all stages of the research cycle (i.e., design, collection, processing, analysis, preservation, data sharing and reuse); we invited responses from participants who either now or in the past carried out data stewardship functions, regardless of their job title. The survey asked respondents about their job titles, the organizational context in which they work(ed) including contract types and domains, their educational background, and how they perceive their professional future. </p><p>This dataset publication includes:</p><ol><li>Survey response data in CSV format. The file includes data from 241 respondents who consented to participate in the survey and share the data via a repsoitory, who indicated that they either currently work or have worked in the past in a data stewardship role, and who responded to at least one further question.</li><li>Thematic analysis of the qualitative questions Q11 and Q12 in PDF format.</li></ol>
Assessing Quality Variations in Early Career Researchers' Data Management Plans: Quantitative Data of the Content Analysis
<p>The data includes the numerical results of the ranking of the data management plans created during the Basics of Research Data Management (BRDM) courses worth 3 ECTS credits in the years 2020 - 2022. The ranking was made using the Finnish DMP Evaluation Guidance (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4729831). Additionally, the data contains the results of the analysis of the best RDM practices included in the DMPs.</p> <p>Note 1: The comma-separated coded CSV version 1 (5.2.2024) may not open correctly on MacOS. You can use the comma-delimited CSV file version 2 or 3 (31.5.2024).</p> <p>Note 2: Versions 1 (Quality_variations_in_ECRs_DMPs_data) and 3 (Quality_variations_in_ECRs_DMPs_data_ver_3) contain evaluations of DMPs, best practices for data management, as well as methods for data sharing, storage, and preservation. DOCUMENTATION OF RISIS DATASETS Doctoral Degree and Career Dataset (DDC)
<p>Documentation is presented for The Doctoral Degree and Career Dataset (DDC). In the framework of the RISIS2 project, DDC is an experimental dissertation-centric database. It primarily consists of an enriched PhD publication dataset which brings togehter information about the dissertation (e.g., topic mapping), about the degree-granting university (e.g., geolocation), as well as basic information about the individual (e.g., gender). The DDC is also leveraging linkages in the RISIS Infrastructure to develop a caeer indicator.</p> <p>This second iteration covers the PhD production for the full two cohorts (2010,2014) for six countries ( AT, DE, IL, NL, ES, NO). The documentation details the design and contents of the dataset.</p> <p> </p>
Quantifying Hierarchy and Prestige in US Ballet Academies as Social Predictors of Career Success
<p>This data contains aggregated competition outcomes from 6,363 ballet students affiliated with 1,603 schools in the United States, who participated in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) between 2000 and 2021.</p> <p>We adopt a network science and <em>science of science</em> approach that empowers logistic regression models and matching experiments to quantify social prestige and its influence on dancers' careers. The analysis of career success in the performing arts, like ballet, in the context of a competition setting offers a unique opportunity to investigate the social influences on success while controlling for competition performance.</p> <p>Our work reveals the importance of institutional prestige on career success in ballet and showcases the potential of network science approaches to provide quantitative viewpoints for the professional development of careers beyond science.</p>
Data from: Breaking Barriers? Ethnicity and socioeconomic background impact on early career progression in the fields of ecology and evolution
<p>The academic disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) have long suffered from a lack of diversity. While in recent years there has been some progress in addressing the underrepresentation of women in STEM subjects, other characteristics that have the potential to impact on equality of opportunity have received less attention. In this study, we surveyed 188 early career scientists (ECRs), defined as within ten years of completing their PhD, in the fields of ecology, evolutionary biology, behaviour, and related disciplines. We examined associations between ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, sex, socioeconomic background, and disability, with measures of career progression, namely publication record, number of applications made before obtaining a postdoc, type of contract, and number of grant applications made. We also queried respondents on perceived barriers to progression, and potential ways of overcoming them. Our key finding was that socioeconomic background and ethnicity were associated with measures of career progression. While there was no difference in the number of reported first-authored papers on PhD completion, ethnic minority respondents reported fewer other-authored papers. In addition, ECRs from a lower socioeconomic background were more likely to report being in teaching and research positions, rather than research only positions, the latter being perceived as more prestigious by some institutions. We discuss our findings in the context of possible inequality of opportunity. We hope that this study will stimulate wider discussion, and help to inform strategies to address the underrepresentation of minority groups in the fields of ecology and evolution, and STEM subjects more widely.</p>

Leveraging English Proficiency for Global Connectivity and Career Advancement
<p>In the era of globalization and rapid technological advancement, mastery of English is <br>becoming increasingly important as a means of international communication and <br>access to information. This manuscript explores the importance of English language <br>competence in various aspects of life, particularly in the context of education. The <br>research background shows that English plays a vital role in cross-cultural <br>communication, career opportunities, and academic advancement. However, there <br>are challenges faced by international students in learning English, including <br>differences in cultural backgrounds and variations in language proficiency levels. This <br>manuscript aims to analyze effective strategies and interventions for improving English <br>language learning for international students, as well as discuss the importance of a <br>more critical and inclusive approach to the adoption of English as a language of <br>instruction in higher education. This study then conducted a comprehensive literature <br>review of various up-to-date sources. The results of the analysis and discussion show <br>that the availability of resources, institutional support, and collaboration between <br>stakeholders play an important role in creating an effective English language learning <br>ecosystem for international students. The highlight of the study stream is the <br>importance of English language competency as a catalyst for global connectivity, <br>career development, and educational advancement. </p>

Planning for the Future: How ICT Professors Approach Retirement and Post-Career Life
<p><strong>Context</strong>: Professors' attitudes toward retirement vary widely, ranging from enthusiasm to reluctance. Some see it as a new beginning, while others perceive it as an intensified continuation of their academic efforts. As an evolving process, professor retirement is becoming increasingly relevant due to the aging academic workforce in higher education institutions worldwide. <strong>Goal</strong>: This study aims to investigate the human, organizational, legal, and regulatory factors that may affect the retirement process of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professors. <strong> Method</strong>: We conducted a survey with 176 ICT professors from various universities across the country to gather data on their perceptions and preparations for retirement. <strong>Results</strong>: Our findings reveal that most professors begin to consider retirement early (31.3%) or mid-career (21.6%). Over 64% plan to engage in leisure activities and travel after retirement, while continuing to contribute to academic research. Additionally, many reported building a financial reserve during their active professional life to supplement their income and maintain their standard of living. <strong>Conclusion</strong>: ICT professors are increasingly aware of the importance of retirement planning, with many adopting strategies to ensure a comfortable future and continue their academic contributions. Financial reserves and post-career activity planning are key aspects of this process. However, most universities do not offer training courses to prepare them for retirement.</p> <p><strong>Keywords</strong>: Retirement, ICT Professors, Post-Career Life</p>
