Point-count bird censusing: long-term monitoring of bird abundance and diversity in central Arizona-Phoenix, ongoing since 2000
### project overview Over the past half-century, the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA) has been one of the fastest growing regions in the US, experiencing rapid urban expansion in addition to urban intensification. This backdrop provides an ideal setting to monitor biodiversity changes in response to urbanization, and the CAP LTER has been using a standardized point-count protocol to monitor the bird community in the GPMA and surrounding Sonoran desert region since 2000. The bird survey locations in this CAP LTER core monitoring program include six general site groupings: 1. ESCA. Forty bird survey locations were selected from a subset of the CAP LTER's Ecological Survey of Central Arizona (ESCA; formerly named Survey200) long-term monitoring sites. ESCA sites were located using a tessellation-stratified dual-density sampling design, and, as such, span a diversity of habitats including urban, suburban, rural, commercial areas, parks, agricultural fields, and native Sonoran desert. Earlier versions of this data package included data from the ESCA project that was intended to complement the bird data. However, while positioned in close proximity, the bird survey locations do not necessarily overlap with the 30m x 30m plot that constitutes an ESCA sampling location, and leveraging data from these two monitoring programs should be addressed carefully. ESCA data have corresponding survey location names, and those data are available through the CAP LTER and LTER network data portals. At the conclusion of the 2016 spring survey, fifteen of the ESCA-correlated sites were discontinued as the core monitoring program refocused its efforts on desert parks and PASS neighborhoods. Massachusetts Historical Landcover and Census Data 1640-1999
An appreciation of historical landuse and its effects is crucial when interpreting the structure, composition, and spatial characteristics of modern forests. The Harvard Forest has compiled many different historical data sources in an ongoing effort to understand how anthropogenic disturbances have shaped our modern landscapes. Estimates of town land use and land cover were gathered from a variety of sources, including tax valuations (1801-1860) and state agricultural census records (1865-1905). Data prior to 1801 rarely cover the entire state and are excluded from these datasets. Data on forest structure are available for several time periods, including 1885 and 1895 (Agricultural Censuses) and 1916-1920s (State Forester’s reports).
Land Conservation and Human Demographics by Census Tract in New England 2014-2018
This dataset summarizes land protection, conservation prioritization layer scores, and human demographics within New England communities, defined as census tracts. This dataset was created to identify disparities in land protection according to metrics of social marginalization and assess how incorporating environmental justice criteria into land conservation prioritization systems might change conservation priorities.
Demographic census data for four perennial plants under experimental pollination treatments
These demographic data were collected to measure the effects of manipulated pollination treatments on the population dynamics of four iteroparous perennial plant species: Delphinium nuttallianum (Ranunculaceae), Hydrophyllum fendleri (Boraginaceae [Hydrophyllaceae]), Erigeron speciosus (Asteraceae), and Potentilla pulcherrima (Roseaceae). The pollination treatments consisted of Control corresponding to ambient pollination, Reduced for which 50% of open flowers on each individual were enclosed in mesh to exclude pollinators, Supplemented for which all receptive flowers were hand pollinated with outcross pollen, and Variable for which individuals received the Reduced treatment in ca. 50% of years. The full life cycle was characterized from at least four annual demographic censuses of tagged plants between 2017-2022, germination rates estimated in seed addition plots, and soil seed bank survival estimated from buried seed bags.

Leslie Holdridge arboretum tree census, La Selva Research Station, Organization for Tropical Studies, Sarapiquí, Heredia, Costa Rica, 1972-2017.
This database is a collection of dendrometric and structural measurements for all the trees in the arboretum, it was compiled through the assessment of 10 census from 1972 to 2017 by O. Vargas and E. Castro for the Organization for Tropical Studies. The 3.5-hectare Holdridge Arboretum is located at La Selva Research Station. Leslie R. Holdridge, the original owner of the property, created the arboretum in 1968. Initially, it was a small cacao grove with an exceptionally rich overstory of native shade trees. To facilitate research in the arboretum, staff later removed the cacao. In 1970, Gary Hartshorn continued to plant seedlings of many native tree species. OTS continues to plant, tag, and measure trees. OTS maintains the arboretum by regular mowing and pruning to facilitate safe access. Courses, natural history visitors, students, and researchers use the arboretum for a wide range of observational studies, manipulations, dendrological practices, and taxonomy classes.
Tree Census Data of Tropical Dry Forest Succession in Permanent Plots at Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica (1999–2004), Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS)
This data package contains tree census data from eight permanent forest plots established in 1999 across four successional sites within the tropical dry forest of Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°21’N, 85°21’W). The plots were established to study forest structure, composition, and successional dynamics under different disturbance histories in the lowland dry forest ecosystem of northwestern Costa Rica. Each site represents a distinct successional stage, ranging from an early grass-dominated field (Jaragua) to an older partially disturbed remnant forest stand (Varillal). Two permanent 50×50 m plots were established at each site and subdivided into 10×10 m subplots. All woody stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were tagged, identified to species, and spatially referenced using X–Y coordinates within each plot. For multi-stemmed individuals, all stems meeting the diameter threshold were measured separately. Tree diameter, condition, and taxonomic identification were recorded during four measurement campaigns in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The dataset includes species identity, DBH, measurement year, individual condition, and subplot coordinates for each stem. These data provide a baseline for understanding forest regeneration, mortality, recruitment, and species composition changes in tropical dry forest succession under varying land-use histories. The dataset represents the historical component of an ongoing long-term monitoring program of forest succession conducted by the Organization for Tropical Studies at Palo Verde National Park, led, developed and supported by Eugenio González since its establishment in 1999.
Multi-year census of arthropod abundance on the plant Ligusticum porteri near Gothic, CO
The purpose of this study was to track year-to-year variation in aphid abundance on the host plant Ligusticum porteri (Apiaceae). We censused arthropod abundance on the flowering stalks of L. porteri weekly in June-August from 2012 to 2022. The censuses took place in ten L. porteri populations near the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic, CO. While the same populations were used across years, we randomly selected ten flowering plants in each population in each year (N = 100 plants per year). Observations focused on colonization by the aphid Aphis asclepiadis, its mutualist ants, and natural enemies. When found, we counted other arthropods as well, identifying them to Family or Order in the field. We also counted the number of host plant flowering stalks and inflorescences (umbel). In 2016, we began tracking flowering phenology using a numerical score (0-8). To track senescence, we used a qualitative score (TB=turning brown and AB=all brown) for terminal and primary umbels.

Waterways are often the focus of restoration efforts in urban areas. In arid regions, passive discharge of urban water sources may stimulate the recovery or growth of wetland and riparian features in dewatered or ephemeral aquatic systems. In the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA), sections of the Salt and Gila Rivers have been the targets of active restoration through seeding, planting, and irrigation. At the same time, revegetation has occurred in some sections of the rivers in response to runoff from urban water sources (e.g., storm drains). This dataset catalogs the results of bird surveys conducted at several locations along the Salt River in and around the GPMA beginning in March 2013. Monitoring locations focus on reaches of the river with different characteristics, including: (1) urbanized with perennial water and actively restored (n=2 reaches), (2) urbanized with perennial water and passively restored (n=2 reaches), (3) urbanized with ephemeral water but not restored (n=2 reaches), and (4) non-urban reference areas with perennial water (n=1 reach). This program expands on bird monitoring that the CAP LTER conducts at other locations in and around the GPMA, and complements herpetological surveys that are performed at these locations along the Salt River where the bird surveys are performed. This is a long-term monitoring effort of the CAP LTER with on-going data collection.
Variability Census of Legacy Catalogs: New Pulsating Variables and Eclipsing Binaries
<div> <p>I present the preliminary results of a comprehensive variability census of the four legacy catalogs: BD (+CD+SD), HD, SAO, and PPM. This dedicated survey project aims to identify bright A-F type variable stars using high-precision space photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS ) and Gaia. Phases I through V of this survey, encompassing analyses of 193,940 A-F stars selected from the aforementioned catalogs, have been completed. To date, the project has yielded a substantial number of new variable star discoveries, including: over 14,510 new δ Scuti stars, more than 18,382 new γ Doradus stars, and over 2,354 new eclipsing binary systems, with approximately 360 binaries exhibiting pulsations in the primary components. Furthermore, thousands of rotational variables and dozens of Heartbeat stars and RR Lyrae stars have been identified, demonstrating the power of this systematic approach in revealing the rich diversity of stellar variability. Due to potential blending and contamination in TESS photometry, the binarity of a few pulsating stars or those eclipsing binaries exhibiting superimposed intrinsic pulsations of <em>δ</em> Scuti and <em>γ</em> Doradus types should be rechecked. Data for Cell-type-specific inhibitory circuitry from a connectomic census of mouse visual cortex

See <a href="https://www.microns-explorer.org/cortical-mm3">MICrONs-Explorer</a> for a full description of the broader volume and how it was collected.</p> <p>The data here include both data tables of cell locations, neuronal features, synapse lists, and more, as well as files containing morphological descriptions of all neurons used for the analysis in the initial version of the preprint. The FORCIS database: A global census of planktonic Foraminifera from ocean waters
<p>The FORCIS (Foraminifera Response to Climatic Stress) database is a synthesis grouping datasets on living planktonic foraminifera. We assembled foraminiferal diversity and distribution data in the global oceans from 1910 until 2018, curating published and unpublished datasets. This database includes data collected using plankton tows, continuous plankton recorder, sediment traps and plankton pump from the global ocean.</p> <p>The FORCIS database version 01 is composed of 5 files (“.csv” format). All data coming from different sampling devices were put into separate “.csv” files. Only the data of the CPR from the Southern Hemisphere have been separated from the Northern Hemisphere CPR data as the data structure is not the same (species counts resolved vs. binned total counts, respectively). </p> <p>Apart from the file of CPR data from the Northern Hemisphere that contains only metadata and binned total counts, all the remaining four files contain 4 blocks:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Block 1: metadata (from column 1 to 71)</p> </li> <li> <p>Block 2: original counts (from column 72 to 274)</p> </li> <li> <p>Block 3: generated counts based on the validated taxonomy (from column 275 to 331). Floral Censuses and Surveys of Insect Visitors to Flowers, University of Michigan Biological Station, Summers 1984-1986
I investigated within- and between-year patterns of flowering phenology of plants and the insects that visited them in an isolated old field in northern Michigan, USA. The project goal was to document the dynamics of resource availabilty (each floral species produced nectar and/or pollen) and assess the implications of its temporal variation on the composition of the community of insects that exploited those resources. I censued the number of open flowers for each species in 50 4-m2 quadrats at 3- 5-day intervals from June-September 1984-1986, and in separate but contemporaneous surveys of the same quadrats recorded each insect species observed on any open flower.
