A corpus-based study of the acquisition of the English progressive by L1 Chinese learners: From prototypical activities to marked statives

This article investigates how EFL learners’ progressive markings are influenced by the lexical aspect of verbs, modality (spoken vs. written), and proficiency levels, focusing on the controversial issue of stative verbs in progressives in L2 acquisition. Spoken (SECCL) and written (WECCL) corpus data from two proficiency levels of Chinese EFL learners and comparison data from native English speakers (COCA) were analyzed. The results suggest that in both learner and native data the progressive -ing is strongly associated with activity verbs, stative verbs being least likely to be inflected with the progressive, as predicted by the Aspect Hypothesis (Andersen and Shirai 1994, 1996). However, inconsistently with the Aspect Hypothesis, this association strengthens with higher proficiency levels. Learners’ use of stative verbs in the progressive and the overextended use of stative progressives was also found to be related to spoken vs. written mode of production and proficiency levels, with learners retreating from overextension as their proficiency increases. A usage-based account of the findings is proposed.

Study on optimization effect of south roof curve of Chinese solar greenhouse

To maximize the use of solar energy and increase the utilization area of Chinese solar greenhouse (CSG) land, a solar greenhouse radiation model was established based on previous studies, combining with the law of solar movement, meteorological data, and optical properties of materials. The model is verified by selecting the measured data of typical sunny days. The results show that the optimization of the south roof curve of the greenhouse can not only increase the land-use area in the greenhouse but also increase the solar energy captured by the solar greenhouse. And the CSG in the greenhouse, the land-use area in the greenhouse increased to 42 m2, the lighting rate of the south roof, and the lighting rate of the ground increased 15.2% and 0.78% respectively. The amount of interception in the back wall of the greenhouse was reduced by 0.67%, and that in the greenhouse was increased by 2.22%. The optimal structure CSG in Shenyang (span 9 m) is the optimal shoulder height position, obtain the best shoulder height position of the greenhouse, the level of front and bottom Angle is 0.7 m, and the height is 2 m. Combined with the actual greenhouse construction demand, the optimal curve function Y1 and Y2 of the south roof of the greenhouse are calculated. This paper verifies the structural safety of the front roof of the greenhouse after the renovation, and shows that increasing the shoulder height can also increase the structural stability of the greenhouse and strengthen the structural safety of the greenhouse.

The role of spatial terms in time expressions: A case study of Chinese temporal words

This project provides the research data, namely all the Chinese temporal words collected from the BCC corpus for The role of spatial terms in time expressions: A case study of Chinese temporal words. There is one table here which includes all tokens taken from the BCC corpus. More specifically, it lists 692 unique Chinese temporal words along with their frequencies. All of these temporal words have been classified into three categories: explicitly spatialized temporal words, implicitly spatialized temporal words, and others. All explicitly spatialized temporal words have been annotated based on the type of spatial terms they are marked with, mainly including location/direction, motion, dimension, objects, deixis, and spatial mixtures.

Metabolic syndrome for the prognosis of postoperative complications after open pancreatic surgery in Chinese adult: a propensity score matching study

Background: To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and postoperative complications in Chinese adults after open pancreatic surgery.

Methods: Relevant data were retrieved from the Medicalsystem® database of Changhai hospital (MDCH). All patients who underwent pancreatectomy from January 2017 to May 2019 were included, and relevant data were collected and analyzed. A propensity score matching (PSM) and a multivariate generalized estimating equation were used to investigate the association between MS and composite compositions during hospitalization. Cox regression model was employed for survival analysis.

Results: 1481 patients were finally eligible for this analysis. According to diagnostic criteria of Chinese MS, 235 patients were defined as MS, and the other 1246 patients were controls. After PSM, no association was found between MS and postoperative composite complications (OR: 0.958, 95%CI: 0.715-1.282, P=0.958). But MS was associated with postoperative acute kidney injury (OR: 1.730, 95%CI: 1.050-2.849, P=0.031). Postoperative AKI was associated with mortality in 30 days and 90 days after surgery (P<0.001).

Conclusions: MS is not an independent risk factor correlated with postoperative composite complications after open pancreatic surgery. But MS is an independent risk factor for postoperative AKI of pancreatic surgery in Chinese population, and AKI is associated with survival after surgery.

Data from: Petrogenetic studies of Permian pegmatites in the Chinese Altay: implications for a two-stage post-collisional magmatism model

Understanding the petrogenesis of rare-metal pegmatites is important for understanding ore-forming processes and their tectonic settings. In this study, we performed zircon U-Pb geochronological and Hf-O isotopic analyses of the Xiaokalasu (XKLS), Dakalasu (DKLS) and Yelaman (YLM) pegmatites in the Chinese Altay orogen. These pegmatites have low εHf(t) values (-0.6 ~ +4.3), two-stage model ages of 989 ~ 1293 Ma, and high δ18O values (+6.52 ~ +11.31), indicating that they may have been derived from the anatexis of mature sedimentary rocks in the deep crust, with a small amount of mantle-derived or juvenile material. Geochronological and Hf-O isotopic data for granitic intrusions in the Chinese Altay Mountains indicate that the εHf(t) values decreased from the Permian to the Triassic, which implies that two-stage post-collisional magmatism occurred in this region. During the Permian, the thin lower crust was cold; thus, magmatism likely originated in the deep crust close to the Moho surface and involved intense mantle-crust interactions. During the Triassic, asthenospheric upwelling provided heat to the lower crust, which increased the geothermal gradient and led to the anatexis of shallow crustal material.
