Differential transcriptomic regulation in sweet orange fruit (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) following dehydration and rehydration conditions leading to peel damage
<p>Water stress is the most important environmental agent causing crop productivity and quality losses globally. In citrus, water stress is a main driver of fruit peel disorders that impact quality and marketability. An increasingly present postharvest peel disorder is non-chilling peel pitting (NCPP). NCPP is manifested as collapsed areas of flavedo randomly scattered on the fruit and its incidence increases due to abrupt increases in environmental relative humidity (RH) during postharvest fruit manipulation. In this work we have used a custom-made cDNA microarray containing 44k unigenes from <em>Citrus sinensis</em> (L. Osbeck) covering for the first time the whole genome from this species, to study transcriptomic responses of mature citrus fruit to water stress. We have compared global gene expression profiles of flavedo from Navelate oranges subjected to severe water stress with those of fruit subjected to rehydration stress provoked by changes in RH during postharvest, which enhances the development of NCPP. Our results show that NCPP is a complex physiological process that shares molecular responses with those from prolonged dehydration in fruit, but the damage associated to NCPP may be explained by unique features of rehydration stress at the molecular level, including membrane disorganization, cell wall modification, and proteolysis.</p>

CitrusUAT: A Dataset of Orange Citrus sinensis Leaves for Abnormality Detection Using Image Analysis Techniques
<p>This dataset provides a collection of color images taken from the orange leaves of <em>Citrus sinensis</em> (L.) Osbeck species with diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and pest symptoms, proper to develop abnormality detection algorithms based on digital image analysis techniques. The dataset comprises 953 color images divided into 12 classes of orange leaves: Healthy, Huanglongbing (HLB), Greasy spot, Iron deficiency, Magnesium deficiency, Manganese deficiency, Nitrogen deficiency, Zinc deficiency, Texas citrus mite, Red scale, Red scale sequelae, and Citrus leafminer. Each color image was segmented by a thresholding method to obtain a binary mask of the leaf region. Samples were analyzed by the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) diagnostic test to detect the <em>Ca.</em> L. asiaticus bacterium that causes HLB disease.</p>

Chromosome-Level Genome Assembly of the 'Gannanzao' Navel Orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck Gannanzao)
<p>Gannanzao navel orange (<em>Citrus sinensis</em> Osbeck cv. Gannanzao) is a variant of the Newhall navel orange (<em>C. sinensis</em> Osbeck cv. Newhall) that exhibits an earlier maturation, making it commercially valuable. However, the underlying mechanism underneath its early maturation remains unknown. To address this question, we conducted genome sequencing and de novo assembly of navel orange cv. Gannanzao. The assembled genome sequence is 334.57 Mb in length with a GC content of 31.48%. It comprises 318 contigs (N50 = 3.23 Mb) and 187 scaffolds (N50 = 31.86 Mb). The BUSCO test demonstrates 94.6% completeness. The annotation revealed 23,037 gene models, 164.95 Mb of repetitive sequences, and 2,554 ncRNA.</p>
