CRAAS: Cloud Regime dAtAset based on the CLAAS-2.1 climate data record

The Cloud Regime dAtAset based on the CLAAS-2.1 climate data record (CRAAS) is a dataset of cloud regimes derived from cloud properties from the CLAAS-2.1 climate data record. Such a cloud regime dataset can provide detailed insight in the cloud climatology over the region of interest and also in climate monitoring through the concept of the cloud regimes.

CRAAS covers a region over Europe (30°N to 60°N and from 11°W to 37°E) and it extends from 2004 to 2017. The generated Joint Cloud Histograms (JCHs) of Cloud Top Pressure (CTP) and Cloud Optical Thickness (COT),
as well as the derived labeled data points of the cloud regime classification are available on a 1°x1° degree resolution and every 15 minutes.

Two sets of yearly files can be found in the dataset. Those containing the generated JCHs from the CLAAS-2.1 climate data record (example filename: 'craas_jch_2004.v1.nc')
and those including the labeled data points of the cloud regime classification (example filename: 'craas_label_2004.v1.nc').
The files are provided in netCDF4 format, following the NetCDF Climate and Forecast Metadata Conventions-Version 1.8 (CF-1.8).

MODIS-VIIRS Cloud Regimes

The MODIS-VIIRS Cloud Regimes are a discrete classification of cloud fields at the mesoscale as observed by the VIIRS sensors aboard the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 satellites, as well as the MODIS sensor aboard the Aqua satellite using the Continuity algorithm. Derived by applying the k-means clustering algorithm to joint-histograms of cloud top pressure and cloud optical thickness, the cloud regimes represent different atmospheric systems based on their cloud signatures. This MODIS-VIIRS Cloud Regimes dataset is an independently derived dataset which can be viewed as an extension of the work that produced the MODIS Cloud Regimes (Cho et al. 2021, Oreopoulos 2021).

The MODIS-VIIRS Cloud Regimes are derived similarly by applying a k-means clustering algorithm to the joint-histograms at equal-area grids of 110 km every 3-h generated from granule (Level-2) cloud products available from the Continuity Algorithm "CLDPROP" applied on observations by the MODIS Aqua, VIIRS Suomi-NPP, and VIIRS NOAA-20 sensors during the period of March 2018 to February 2023. A cluster number of k = 11 was selected, which when including a clear sky regime gives a total of 12 MODIS-VIIRS Cloud Regimes. Each histogram is then assigned to the nearest k-means centroid to obtain its regime membership. Two variants of the VIIRS Cloud Regimes are available: (1) a 3-h product in the original 110-km native resolution of its derivation, and (2) a 3-h product derived from the 110-km product by nearest neighbor interpolation to 1°.

Cho, N., J. Model output for analyses in Qian et al. (2023) "Region and cloud regime dependences of parametric sensitivity in E3SM Atmosphere Model".

This archive contains post-processed data for analyses in Qian et al. (2023) "Region and cloud regime dependences of parametric sensitivity in E3SM Atmosphere Model". These data are model output from the Perturbed Parameters Ensemble (PPE) simulations conducted with DOE's E3SM Atmosphere Model Version 1 (EAMv1). There are 256x12 PPE simulations with each simulation run for 5 days following the approach of Cloud Associated Parameterization Testbed (CAPT) and transpose Atmosphere Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) paradigm. The diagnostic variables associated with the parameterizations of turbulence and shallow convection, deep convection, cloud microphysics, and gravity wave drag at day 5 are saved and used for analyses in this paper.

MODIS Cloud Regimes and Cloud-Precipitation Hybrid Regimes (MODIS-IMERG)
Cloud regimes and Cloud-Precipitation Hybrid Regimes are derived via k-means clustering, with MODIS C6.1 2D joint histogram of CTP and COT (total 42 bins) and IMERG v06B precipitation histogram (total 6 bins) in 50S-50N and 15S-15N domain. By the relative weight between cloud and precipitation, there are 4 kinds of regime sets for each tropical and extended domain: 1) Cloud only (42 bins), 2) Cloud+Precipitation with weight 1 (Cld42+Pr6x1; 48 bins), 3) Cloud+Precipitation with weight 3 (Cld42+Pr6x3; 60 bins), 4) Cloud+Precipitation with weight 7 (Cld42+Pr6x7; 84 bins; equal weight). Cloud Regime for CRE Feedback Study
Cloud-only regimes (and 3 sub-regimes of CR15) originally derived from Terra and Aqua observations in 50S-50N, and corresponding "regime numbers on map" files assigned to 60S-60N domain are provided (see Jin et al. 2021, doi: 10.1175/JAMC-D-20-0253.1).
