Data from: mPRIME Study - Interaction of Insulin Resistance with Cognition, Lifestyle, and Mental Health

<p>The presented datasets were collected within the <em>m</em>PRIME study, a prospective, observational study of the H2020 project Prevention and Remediation of Insulin Multimorbidity in Europe (PRIME) (grant No. 847879). The study investigates the interaction of insulin resistance with cognition, lifestyle, and mental health by combining traditional methods with ambulatory assessment and sensor-based data collection. Recruitment took place between March 2021 and March 2023 at the University Hospital Frankfurt, Germany.</p> <p>The eligibility criteria for the study were as follows: Age above 18 years, no intake of antidiabetic medication, insulin or glucocorticoids, no existing type 1 diabetes mellitus or gestational diabetes, no diagnoses of bipolar I disorder, schizophrenia, organically caused mental disorders and substance dependence, no severe neurological disorders, no current pregnancy or breastfeeding, no non-correctable visual impairments, no participation in medication-related studies within the last 6 months, no use of weight-reducing medications or a diet within the last 3 months, sufficient proficiency in German to&nbsp;complete questionnaires and neuropsychological tests.</p> <p>All participants in the <em>m</em>PRIME study provided written informed consent. The study protocol and procedures were approved by the local ethics committee.</p> <p><strong>Study Design</strong></p> <p>Individuals completed a baseline assessment and a one-week ambulatory assessment. The baseline assessment included: socio-demographic information, blood samples, anthropometric measures, neuropsychological tests, and several questionnaires. In addition, individuals were introduced to smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), food protocols, and the use of sensors (continuous glucose monitor, accelerometer). Food protocols and EMA were conducted on three consecutive days, including two weekdays and one weekend day (Thursday to Saturday or Sunday to Tuesday). Several times a day, individuals were prompted via their smartphone to complete a working memory task and answer questions about stress, affect, and food intake. The continuous glucose monitor and accelerometer were worn continuously for 1 week.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

COgnitive intervention to Restore attention using nature Environment (CORE) study data

<p>The COgnitive intervention to Restore attention using nature Environment (CORE) study is single-blinded, two-group randomized-controlled pilot trial among patients with heart failure. The aims to test the preliminary efficacy of the newly developed Nature-VR, a virtual reality-based cognitive intervention that is based on the restorative effects of nature. The Nature-VR intervention group viewed 3-dimensional nature pictures using a virtual reality headset for 10 minutes per day, 5 days per week for 4 weeks (a total of 200 minutes). The active comparison group, Urban-VR, viewed 3-dimensional urban pictures using a virtual reality headset to match the Nature-VR intervention in intervention dose and delivery mode, but not in content. In this study, 73 participants with heart failure completed the baseline and randomized to either Nature-VR or Urban-VR. The target outcomes were attention, self-care of heart failure, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). After baseline data collection, 4 follow-up data were collected at 4, 8, 26, and 52 weeks.</p>

<p>Dataset for demographic, psychological and physiological data obtained for RESTORE (Experiment 1 WP1). Study results are published in the article titled "Investigating effect chains from cognitive and noise-induced short-term stress build-up to restoration in an urban or nature setting using 360&deg; VR" in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Explanations on all variables (column names) in the datasets are given either in the second spreadsheet in each Excel file or in the csv files appended with _legend.csv (see latest version of the dataset). File 'Psychophysiological_participant_data_aggregated' is aggregated per participant (single or mean values), and the file 'Restoration_EDA_baseline-corrected_aggregated' contains EDA data aggregated per time point per restoration setting (Nature vs Urban) and prior cognitive demand condition. Methodological details on how the data was obtained and processed are given in the Open Access article.</p>

Language-enhanced cognitive skills model

<p>This is a model of cognitive skills required in the workplace which enhance previous models by including a more detailed measurement of linguistic skills. Linguistic skills are defined as the set of abilities, competencies and knowledge which principally involve the use of linguistic code. More specifically, the linguistic items used are reading and writing competencies, ability to speak, listen or communicate, as well as knowledge of second languages (as a whole). These variables were factorialised together with a list of competencies from previous models of cognitive skills. Principal component analysis (PCA) with equamax rotation was applied to reduce the dimensionality of all items to a few interpretable dimensions according to the correlations between them.&nbsp;The result is nine factors with similar variances among at least three express linguistic-related skills: The first factor expresses the demand for scientific and engineering knowledge. The second refers to a collection of competencies which could be called verbal-reasoning. These include deductive and inductive reasoning skills or those of identifying and solving complex problems. Some linguistic competencies relating to the level of oral and written comprehension and expression are also relevant in this factor. The third factor expresses numerical or quantitative competencies. The fourth expresses the demand for communicative competencies, composed of variables related to efficient communication goals such as clarity of speech, active listening or speaking. The fifth factor expresses creative abilities. The sixth, competencies and knowledge linked to electronics and computers. The seventh expresses managerial competencies. The eighth expresses nurturing competencies and the ninth factor basically expresses knowledge of foreign languages.</p>

Theta and alpha power across fast and slow timescales in cognitive control

<p>This dataset contains the raw EEG data collected in a study investigating the neural signatures of extensive training. Specifically, 30 subjects performed a simple stimulus-action association task in which they learned to respond with one out of two key presses to a stimulus presented on screen. In each block, four different stimuli were presented, meaning that half of the stimuli was associated with a right response (press &#39;j&#39;) and the other half was associated with a left response (press &#39;f&#39;). To investigate distinct timescale, stimuli repeated both within experimental blocks (each stimulus 8 times), and one set of stimuli repeated across experimental blocks (8/16 blocks contained the same four stimuli).</p> <p>This dataset contains the raw EEG data collected using a BioSemi 64 channel setup. Also, six external electrodes were used to measure eye activity (left and right mastoid; lateral canthi of both eyes; above and below left eye). The electrodes were placed using the 10-20 system, and this system contained a posterior CMS-DLR electrode combination.</p> <p><strong>The SUBID.npy files contain the behavioral data</strong> of the experiment phase (512 trials; i.e. exercise phase data is not included).<strong>The SUBID.bdf files contain EEG data</strong> of the experiment phase (512 trials; no data was collected during the exercise phase). Finally, the files titled &quot;<strong>theta_alpha_beta_behavioural</strong>&quot; are used in the analysis and plotting scripts (see GitHub).</p>
