A subjective image quality assessment dataset of color graded inverse tone-mapped HDR images

A subjective image quality assessment dataset that includes quality scores of HDR images generated by nine inverse tone mapping methods. The images in the dataset show a wide variety of artifacts commonly present in dynamic range expanded HDR images. Twelve image pairs comprised of an LDR image and its corresponding HDR version were used to conduct the subjective assessment study. These images contain scenes with a wide range of light conditions, representing challenging situations for dynamic range expansion methods.

The image quality dataset includes subjective quality scores for 108 inverse HDR images obtained by the different dynamic range expansion methods, scaled in Just Objectionable Differences (JODs). In addition, it includes the raw data from pairwise comparisons obtained from subjective experimentation. The raw data is composed of 6480 trials collected from 15 human observers.

Files included

List of images used in our experiments (images.csv).

LDR images used as input (ldr.zip).

HDR images used as reference (hdr.zip).

Inverse tone-mapped HDR images evaluated in our study (hdr_itmo.zip).

Pairwise comparison results and JOD scores (subjective-scores.zip)

The objective quality scores of the inverse tone-mapped HDR images, computed by each quality metric assessed (objective-scores.zip).

Moonlight influence on quality of nestlings of scops owls depends on paternal coloration

The moon might favour the maintenance of colour polymorphism via disruptive selection if the different colour variants performed differently in terms of prey capture under different moonlight levels. Moonlight, however, may affect prey capture as a by side effect of its influence on prey behaviours. Here we combine data of parental provisioning and owlets' quality with one ex-situ study of grasshoppers' activity to test whether Eurasian scops owls (Otus scops) with different plumage colour and their prey are differently affected by moonlight. Food provisioning increased from new- to full-moon. However, the effect of moonlight on owlet mass gain and immune response depended on paternal coloration. On the one hand, body mass gain of nestlings of the greyest fathers increased from nights with new- to full-moon, whereas it did not change with moonlight for the brownest fathers. On the other hand, PHA response of nestlings of the brownest fathers increased with high moonlight levels during the first week of life, whereas it did not change with moonlight levels for the greyest fathers. Grasshoppers were more active at new moon than at full or waning moon. Our study provides supporting evidence that moonlight influences the behaviour of both scops owls and its prey and suggests that fluctuations in environmental conditions can modulate the advantages of morphs. These results are important because they provide a general insight into a little appreciated mechanism for the maintenance of colour polymorphism in natural populations based on the interactive effect of different environmental factors.

Data from: Mite load predicts the quality of sexual color and locomotor performance in a sexually dichromatic lizard

Since Darwin, the maintenance of bright sexual colors has recurrently been linked to mate preference. However, the mechanisms underpinning such preferences for bright colors would not be resolved for another century. Likely, the idea of selection for colors that could decrease the chances of survival (e.g. flashy colors that can inadvertently attract predators) was perceived as counterintuitive. It is now widely-accepted that these extreme colors often communicate to mates the ability to survive despite a 'handicap' and act as honest signals of individual quality when they are correlated with the quality of other traits that are directly linked to individual fitness. Sexual colors in males are frequently perceived as indicators of infection resistance, in particular. Still, there remains considerable discord among studies attempting to parse the relationships between the variables associating sexual color and infection resistance, such as habitat type and body size. This discord may arise from complex interactions between these variables. Here, we ask if sexual color in male Florida scrub lizards (Sceloporus woodi) is an honest signal of resistance to chigger mite infection. To this end, we use linear modeling to explore relationships between mite load, different components of sexual color, ecological performance, body size, and habitat type. Our data show that that the brightness of sexual color in scrub lizards is negatively associated with the interaction between mite load and body size, and scrub lizards suffer decreased endurance capacity with increases in mite load. Our data also indicate that mite load, performance, and sexual color in male scrub lizards can vary between habitat types. Collectively these results suggest that sexual color in scrub lizards is an honest indicator of individual quality and further underscore the importance of considering multiple factors when testing hypotheses related to the maintenance of sexual color.
