Microplastics in Como Creek, Green Lake 4, and Solifluction Lobes 2023.
Microplastics are known to persist in remote regions of the Colorado Front Range through atmospheric deposition. Although plastics are introduced by wet deposition, high rates of deposition are driven by dry deposition. With a warming climate, microplastic deposition may increase with unknown consequences for the ecological health of remote ecosystems. To assess the risk of microplastic distribution in remote regions, monitoring of environmental compartments is needed. To this end, we sampled three surface waters within the Niwot LTER for microplastics using a peristaltic in-line filtration sampling pump.
Aspen litterfall data for Mountain Research Station, Como Creek, and C1, 1996 - 1999.
This measurement was established in summer 1996, in response to the observation by Mark Losleben that the aspen foliage dynamics appeared to exhibit a very sensitive response to climate, particularly duration of snowpack. Aspen production, as indexed by litterfall, was suggested to be an important integrator andgor response function to climatic variability. Also, these data provide a minimum estimate of aboveground NPP of aspen stands in the Colorado Front Range, a data set of interest in relation to similar measurements obtained for the alpine tundra above these sites. NOTE: The LTER data portal display does not display important maintenance/log information or other EML metadata features. Please be sure to view the EML file (a text file that contains XML tags) which is included in the zip archive (click on "Download zip archive") pertaining to each dataset. The EML file name will have the following format: knb-lter-nwt.[3 digit dataset number].[version number].xml. Most web browsers can parse the EML so it's easier to read.
Streamflow data for Como creek, 2006 - 2014
This is a summary of discharge from the Como Creek catchment located on and below the southeast flank of Niwot Ridge (40°N, 105°W) in Colorado, USA, approximately 4–9 km east of the Continental Divide. The catchment is 5.36 km2 in area and ranges in elevation from 2900 to 3560 m. Discharge is calculated from tenminute data from a pressure transducer located in a stilling well, and weekly stage and velocity measurements from the center of the weir. Measurements began in 2004 and continue through 2014, with a gap in 2013 during which the pressure transducer was damaged.
Stream water chemistry data for Como creek, 1998-2013
Surface water chemistry samples were taken from the Como Creek catchment located on and below the southeast flank of Niwot Ridge (40°N, 105°W) in Colorado, USA, approximately 4–9 km east of the Continental Divide. The catchment is 5.36 km2 in area and ranges in elevation from 2900 to 3560 m. Measurements began in 1998 and continue through 2013.
Como Creek Colorado C-Q data
<p>R code for downloading and analyzing concentration-discharge (C-Q) data from National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Como Creek site in Colorado. The script first downloads the data from the NEON API, removes quality flagged measurements, and averages all data to 15 minute intervals and merges discharge (Q), nitrate (NO3-N) and water quality (specific conductance-SpC and fluorescent dissolved organic matter-fDOM which is then used to estimate dissolved organic carbon-DOC). This dats is saved as a csv file, which is also included in this repo, so that this step can be bypassed.</p> <p>The code then analyzes the C-Q relationships of individual snowmelt and rainfall induced pulses by fitting a power function to determine whether concentrations are enriched, diluted or chemostatic. A normalized hysteresis index is also calculated for each event. Finally, the code fits a sine model to each day of data to determine the timing and amplitude of the diel signals. </p>
