Dinitrogen Reduction and Functionalization by a Siloxide Supported Thulium-Potassium Complex for the Formation of Ammonia or Hydrazine Derivatives
<p>The dinitrogen (N2) chemistry of lanthanides remainsless developed compared to the d-block metals and lanthanide-promoted N2 functionalization chemistry in well-defined lanthanidecomplexes remains elusive. Here we report the synthesis andcharacterization (SQUID, EPR, DFT, X-Ray) of the siloxidesupported heterobimetallic (Tm/K) complexes[{KTm(OSi(OtBu)3)3}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)] (1) and [K3{Tm(OSi(OtBu)3)3}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)] (2). Complex 2 provides a rare example of a metalcomplex of the triply reduced N23- radical. The structure of 2 differsfrom the few previously reported N23- complexes as it presents twoTm and three K cations binding the N23- radical, facilitating N2functionalization. Notably, the K3Tm2-bound N23- moiety reacts withexcess H+ to form NH4Cl in 18% yield, and with MeOTf at roomtemperature to yield the dimethyl hydrazido complex[K2{Tm(OSi(OtBu)3)3}2(μ-(CH3)NN(CH3))] (3). Protonolysis of 3yields MeHN-NMeH·2HCl in 18 % yield.</p>
Data from: Simplifying understory complexity in oil palm plantations is associated with a reduction in the density of a cleptoparasitic spider, Argyrodes miniaceus (Araneae: Theridiidae), in host (Araneae: Nephilinae) webs
Expansion of oil palm agriculture is currently one of the main drivers of habitat modification in Southeast Asia. Habitat modification can have significant effects on biodiversity, ecosystem function, and interactions between species by altering species abundances or the available resources in an ecosystem. Increasing complexity within modified habitats has the potential to maintain biodiversity and preserve species interactions. We investigated trophic interactions between Argyrodes miniaceus, a cleptoparasitic spider, and its Nephila spp. spider hosts in mature oil palm plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia. A. miniaceus co-occupy the webs of Nephila spp. females and survive by stealing prey items caught in the web. We examined the effects of experimentally manipulated understory vegetation complexity on the density and abundance of A. miniaceus in Nephila spp. webs. Experimental understory treatments included enhanced complexity, standard complexity, and reduced complexity understory vegetation, which had been established as part of the ongoing Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function in Tropical Agriculture (BEFTA) Project. A. miniaceus density ranged from 14.4 to 31.4 spiders per square meter of web, with significantly lower densities found in reduced vegetation complexity treatments compared with both enhanced and standard treatment plots. A. miniaceus abundance per plot was also significantly lower in reduced complexity than in standard and enhanced complexity plots. Synthesis and applications: Maintenance of understory vegetation complexity contributes to the preservation of spider host–cleptoparasite relationships in oil palm plantations. Understory structural complexity in these simplified agroecosystems therefore helps to support abundant spider populations, a functionally important taxon in agricultural landscapes. In addition, management for more structurally complex agricultural habitats can support more complex trophic interactions in tropical agroecosystems.

Data from: Extensive reduction of the nuclear pore complex in nucleomorphs
The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is a large macromolecular assembly situated within the pores of the nuclear envelope. Through interactions between its subcomplexes and import proteins, the NPC mediates the transport of molecules into and out of the nucleus and facilitates dynamic chromatin regulation and gene expression. Accordingly, the NPC constitutes a highly integrated nuclear component that is ubiquitous and conserved amongst eukaryotes. Potential exceptions to this are nucleomorphs: highly reduced, relict nuclei that were derived from green and red algae following their endosymbiotic integration into two lineages, the chlorarachniophytes and the cryptophyceans. A previous investigation failed to identify NPC genes in nucleomorph genomes suggesting that these genes have either been relocated to the host nucleus or lost. Here we sought to investigate the composition of the NPC in nucleomorphs by using genomic and transcriptomic data to identify and phylogenetically classify NPC proteins in nucleomorph-containing algae. Although we found NPC proteins in all examined lineages, most of those found in chlorarachniophytes and cryptophyceans were single copy, host-related proteins that lacked signal peptides. Two exceptions were Nup98 and Rae1, which had clear nucleomorph-derived homologues. However, these proteins alone are likely insufficient to structure a canonical NPC and previous reports revealed that Nup98 and Rae1 have other nuclear functions. Ultimately, these data indicate that nucleomorphs represent eukaryotic nuclei without a canonical NPC, raising fundamental questions about their structure and function.

Data from: Encounter complexes and dimensionality reduction in protein-protein association
An outstanding challenge has been to understand the mechanism whereby proteins associate. We report here the results of exhaustively sampling the conformational space in protein–protein association using a physics-based energy function. The agreement between experimental intermolecular paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE) data and the PRE profiles calculated from the docked structures shows that the method captures both specific and non-specific encounter complexes. To explore the energy landscape in the vicinity of the native structure, the nonlinear manifold describing the relative orientation of two solid bodies is projected onto a Euclidean space in which the shape of low energy regions is studied by principal component analysis. Results show that the energy surface is canyon-like, with a smooth funnel within a two dimensional subspace capturing over 75% of the total motion. Thus, proteins tend to associate along preferred pathways, similar to sliding of a protein along DNA in the process of protein-DNA recognition.
