Harmonic Baseline Experiments for Landsat-Based Forest Condition Monitoring in Southern New England 2017

This dataset was developed as part of a study of harmonic baseline model parameterization for forest condition monitoring using Landsat time series. We implemented a previously published harmonic modeling approach for forest condition monitoring in Google Earth Engine and systematically assessed the relative ability of condition change products generated using various model parameterizations for predicting pest abundances and defoliation during the 2016-2018 Lymantria dispar outbreak in southern New England. We ran a series of 32 experiments that considered a variety of parameter choices for establishing multi-year “baseline” models representing relatively stable forest conditions for each Landsat pixel in our study area. We tested a full set of factors including (a) spectral vegetation index used for model fitting, (b) baseline-modeling period, (c) frequencies of harmonic regression terms, and (d) differences in Landsat time series input imagery. We generated average condition score estimates for each of these 32 baseline parameterizations for a May 1 to September 30, 2017 monitoring period, then used Generalized Linear Mixed Models to test the relationships between ground-based observations of defoliation and defoliator abundance (larva and egg masses). This archived dataset includes the full set of experimental raster results, as well as a “reanalysis” product from a previous implementation of our condition monitoring workflow. Outdoor mesocosm study evaluating how mass, NaCl tolerance, and pesticide tolerance affect oxidative stress biomarkers (CAT, SOD, GR, GPx, TBARS) in larval wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) exposed to baseline and NaCl-contaminated conditions, 2019

Biomarkers of oxidative stress can aid in wildlife monitoring by allowing conservationists to detect sublethal environmental shifts. However, interpretation of stress responses can be complicated by multiple interacting factors (e.g., individual development, evolved physiological tolerance to stressors) which alter biomarker expression. Here, we investigated how individual ontogenetic traits and population-level tolerance traits influence oxidative stress responses under baseline and contaminated environmental conditions. For our model contaminant, we used NaCl (common freshwater contaminant due to factors such as coastal flooding, irrigation, airborne salt circulation, drought, runoff from road deicing salts). For our model wildlife populations, we used larval wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) from six noninteracting populations known to vary in two population-level tolerance traits: NaCl tolerance (calculated as average time to death from lethal NaCl exposure) and pesticide tolerance (determined by proxy of distance to agriculture - a consistent and highly repeatable relationship). At an outdoor research facility, R. sylvatica tadpoles were exposed to either baseline conditions (0 g/L NaCl added) or NaCl-contaminated conditions (1 g/L NaCl added for 21 days, then reduced to 0.5 g/L NaCl). Exposures were conducted in individual units with 40 replicates per population for each treatment. The experiment was terminated per individual to capture the full term of larval development (Developmental stage: Gosner stage 36), lasting between 33-48 days. For each individual, we measured mass, Snout-Vent-Length, and developmental stage before processing for biomarker expression. Tree seedling abundance mediated by local neighborhood effects and microsite conditions

Tree recruitment across elevational gradients is shaped by myriad factors, including abundance of nearby conspecific adults and abiotic establishment conditions. We measured seedling abundance and overstory basal area for six tree species that dominate northern temperate and montane boreal forests on mountains in the northeastern United States. Data were collected on elevational transects spaced at 100m-intervals of elevation on ten mountains. Associated environmental variables, including vegetation cover, substrate, microclimate, and light environment, were also collected.

Also included are CS and US information, keypress responses, keypress response times, key correctness and shock expectancy ratings at the end of the experiment for 74&nbsp;healthy unmedicated participants (33 males and 41&nbsp;females aged 24.2+/-3.9 years) participating in a 3 conditions x 3 experimental sessions repeated-measures design to assess the return of fear. CS were colored triangles (yellow/red/blue). US consisted of a 500 ms train of 250 square pulses with individual pulse width of 0.2 ms. SOA between the CS onset and US was 3.5 s. CS and US co-terminated. The ITI was randomly determined as discrete values between 7-11 seconds (mean 9 seconds).</p>

Long term response of arctic tussock tundra to thermal erosion features: A modeling analysis. A 100 yr old thermal erosion event under control conditions.

The Multiple Element Limitation (MEL) model is used to simulate the recovery of Alaskan arctic tussock tundra to thermal erosion features (TEFs) caused by permafrost thaw and mass wasting. TEFs could be significant to regional carbon (C) and nutrient budgets because permafrost soils contain large stocks of soil organic matter (SOM) and TEFs are expected to become more frequent as climate warms. These simulations deal only with recovery following TEF stabilization and do not address initial losses of C and nutrients during TEF formation. To capture the variability among and within TEFs, we simulate a range of post-stabilization conditions by varying the initial size of SOM pools and nutrient supply rates. This file contains the results for a 100yr old TEF response to N fertilization over 25 years.

Urban Heat and Desert Wildlife: Rodent Body Condition Across a Gradient of Surface Temperatures in the greater Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area (2019-2020)

We live-trapped wild rodents from seven field sites spanning three strata of land-surface temperatures in the Phoenix, Arizona (USA) metropolitan area. We captured 116 adult pocket mice (Chaetodipus spp. and Perognathus spp.) and Merriam’s kangaroo rats (Dipodomys merriami) during 2019 and 2020 from mountainous urban parks and open spaces. Animal body condition was quantified as percent body fat (i.e., fat mass divided by body mass). We used a noninvasive quantitative magnetic resonance instrument to measure body condition.

Lake Wingra Exclosure Experiment at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Sampledate Conditions 2005 - 2008

Starting in late summer 2005, Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources (WDNR), Dane County, Friends of Lake Wingra (FOLW), and NTL-LTER initiated a 3-year experiment in Lake Wingra to test the response of the native macrophyte community to clearer water produced from a major carp reduction program. This demonstration-scale experiment includes the construction of a 1.0-hectare rectangular carp exclosure with its solid vinyl walls extending from the lake shoreline to a water depth of 2.9 meters. NTL-LTER conducts the routine limnological monitoring of the lake and exclosure and is leading the science evaluation of potential lake restoration activities. The exclosure experiment was terminated in the fall of 2008. The exclosure was removed from Lake Wingra at that time. Sampling is done both within the exclosure and at a control site located nearby in the littoral zone. The sample location within the exclosure is equidistant from the side walls and approximately 75 meters from the shore in a water depth of approximately 2.5 meters. The control site sample location is approximately 75 meters west of the exclosure sample site at the same approximate distance from shore and water depth. Samples are taken at the same time and on the same schedule as the NTL-LTER limnological sampling on Lake Wingra, e.g., biweekly spring through summer, every 4 weeks in the fall, and once during the winter depending on ice conditions. Parameters measured within the exclosure and at the control site include water temperature, dissolved oxygen, secchi depth and chlorophyll-a. Additional parameters measured only within the exclosure include total Kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrate + nitrite nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus and dissolved reactive silica. <p>This dataset includes pupil size response (PSR), skin conductance response (SCR), electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG) and respiration measurements. Also included are CS and US information, keypress responses, keypress response times, key correctness and shock ratings for each of 21 healthy unmedicated participants (10 males and 11 females aged 22.9+/-3.0 years; discrepancies to published studies are due to misprints and exclusion of a subject with incomplete data, which was excluded in all conducted studies as well as here) participating in a classical (Pavlovian) discriminant delay fear conditioning task. Two pairs of CS+ and CS-, either complex or simple, were delivered with headphones (HD518, Sennheiser, Wedemark-Wennebostel, Germany) at about 68 dB. Complex stimuli were a sequence of four rising (400 to 800 Hz) or falling (800 to 400 Hz) sounds lasting 1 s each. Simple stimuli were tones with constant frequency (400 or 800 Hz) presented for 4 s. US consisted of square electric pulses with 0.2-ms duration and 10 Hz frequency, resulting in a total US duration of 0.5 s. SOA betwen the CS and US was 3.5 s. The ITI was randomly determined on each trial to be 7, 9, or 11 s.</p>

<p>This dataset includes skin conductance response (SCR), electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration and electromyogramm (EMG, only relevant for retention phase) measurements. Also included are CS and US information, keypress responses and keypress response times for 78 healthy participants (40 males and 38 females aged 23.3+/-3.6 years) under either doxycycline or placebo during a classical (Pavlovian) discriminant delay fear conditioning task. CS were a red and a blue screen. US consisted of 0.5 s square electric pulses with participant-specific duration and 500 Hz frequency. SOA between the CS onset and US was 3.5 s. CS and US co-terminated. Before the fear conditioning task, participants completed an N-back task and several questionnaires. During the retention/extinction phase one week after learning and without drug, an auditory startle probe (ST) and no US was delivered 3.5 s after CS onset via headphones (100 dB, 50 ms duration with 2ms on- and offset ramp). In an immediately following re-learning phase, the ST was omitted and the CS reinforced with the same schedule as during acquisition.
