Leveraging Serverless Computing for Continuous Integration and Delivery

This work has been a first implementation of the usage of AWS Lambda for running CI/CD tasks. This has been implemented in TeamCity, a CI/CD tool by JetBrains. We investigated the possible solutions for using AWS Lambda for running CI/CD tasks, but also did a depth analysis on how it compares to Amazon ECS for running CI/CD tasks.

We were able to understand that there are CI/CD tasks that can be optimised by making use of FaaS. These tasks must be able to be executed in under 15 minutes (or be splittable into 15 minutes tasks), and would benefit more if they're either a high throughput of tasks in a small period of time, or very little executions over time. These tasks will benefit from both a higher performance and cost efficiency.

This package includes:

TeamCity Backup - backup with all of the CI/CD configurations used for these experiments. It is important to mention that the replication of these experiments does require a license for TeamCity and to apply a new connection to AWS;

Tasks Performance tests - all of the results obtained during the experiments led to our conclusions.

Understanding context and forces for choosing organizational structures for continuous delivery

Vídeo de fallback para apresentação no WTDSoft 2020 - X Workshop de Teses e Dissertações.

Abstract:

Online Package for the manuscript "Continuous Integration and Delivery for Cyber-Physical systems: A Grounded-Theory"

This package contains the material of the (grounded theory) study related to the paper

"Continuous Integration and Delivery for Cyber-Physical systems: A Grounded-Theory"

The content of the various files and directories is detailed in the following.

InterviewStructure.pdf: complete interview structure (the paper reports an overview in Table 1)

open_coding/: this directory contains details from the open coding procedure. In particular:
- AllCodesUsedWhileCodingAndMapping.csv contains the list of all codes generated during the open coding, with a symbol near each one (first column) then used to compute the inter-rater agreement
- first_round.csv, second_round.csv, third_round.csv, fourth_round.csv: files used to compute the inter_rater agreement

CodesContributingToMindMap.csv: final set of codes, that contributed to the taxonomy (see below)

FinalCodingTraceability.csv: this file describes how the final set of codes is traced onto the ten interviews. Note that, at this stage, the transcripts have been redacted for confidentiality purposes.

MindMap_Complete.pdf: complete taxonomy of codes, in the form of a mind map. The one reported in the paper (Figure 2) cuts leaves, unless (as for benefits, for example) they are necessary to properly describe and understand the category. Also, note that the complete mind map separates the benefits into "actual" and "expected" (based on what was collected from the interviews) whereas the summary mindmap shown in the paper (Figure 2) does not make this distinction.

6C_Diagrams/ : This directory contains the detailed 6C diagrams (i.e., each box related to a "C" contains the list of codes pertaining to it) for the three dimensions investigated in the paper and addressed in RQ1, RQ2, and RQ3.

Mining Software Repositories for the Characterization of Continuous Integration and Delivery

Continuous Integration (CI) and Delivery (CD) are software development practices increasingly adopted in industry, which aiming at ensuring quality and stability, and making the whole process more efficient and less error-prone. Software engineers that incorporate these practices may have difficulties trying to get an overview of the impact of adopting them and tracking progress. Therefore, performing analysis regarding the level of the application of CI/CD practices in a software repository can help to understand how such practices are adopted, which can result in a better characterization of their benefits and limitations. To support this analysis, we developed Garimpeiro, a web application that supports the characterization of open source repositories hosted on GitHub regarding the level of adoption of CI/CD practices. This video describes the tool and demonstrates how it can be used.
