Alternative Covid-19 mitigation measures in school classrooms: Analysis using an agent-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission

The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic continues to have major impacts on children's education, with schools required to implement infection control measures that have led to long periods of absence and classroom closures. We have developed an agent-based epidemiological model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission that allows us to quantify projected infection patterns within primary school classrooms, and related uncertainties; the basis of our approach is a contact model constructed using random networks, informed by structured expert judgment. The effectiveness of mitigation strategies is considered in terms of effectiveness at suppressing infection outbreaks and limiting pupil absence. Covid-19 infections in schools in the UK in Autumn 2020 are re-examined and the model used for forecasting infection levels in autumn 2021, as the more infectious Delta-variant was emerging and school transmission was thought likely to play a major role in an incipient new wave of the epidemic. Our results are in good agreement with available data and indicate that testing-based surveillance of infections in the classroom population with isolation of positive cases is a more effective mitigation measure than bubble quarantine both for reducing transmission in primary schools and for avoiding pupil absence, even accounting for the insensitivity of self-administered tests. Bubble quarantine entails large numbers of pupils being absent from school, with only a modest impact on classroom infection levels. However, maintaining a reduced contact rate within the classroom can have a major beneficial impact on managing Covid-19 in school settings.

Educational data collected from parents - regarding the analysis of online activities in schools in Romania (during the Covid-19 pandemic, March 2020 - April 2020)

The responses of the 784 parents were collected through the questionnaire available at: https://forms.gle/Km8WE5QamrYYgXJi7

It was designed with various types of responses, including binomial (yes/no), polynomial (multiple options), and open-ended responses, to capture a comprehensive range of data. This combined approach allows for both quantitative analysis of fixed-response questions and qualitative insights from open-ended questions. Patterns, correlations, and differences between various demographic groups and their experiences and attitudes toward online education can be identified.

To protect the identity of the respondents and to obtain accurate responses, all data collected from teachers was anonymous. We did not collect any personal information whatsoever. This aspect was made clear to the respondents in the description of the questionnaire.

Data from: From trial to implementation, bringing team-based learning online – Duke-NUS Medical School's response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in Duke-NUS Medical School moving all their lessons online. Duke-NUS employs a team-based learning (TBL) pedagogy, which depends heavily on student discussion. In 2015, our university had implemented an eLearning week where lessons were conducted online. Using the already present online assessment processes, the data, insights and student feedback allowed for swift implementation of an online TBL module for home-based learning in response to the pandemic in 2020. These protocols were modified over the weeks, guided by feedback from students and faculty. An analysis of this online TBL module is presented herein.

Surveys reporting feedback from families attending Early Childhood Services during 5-month school closure due to COVID-19: an Italian experience

This dataset reports results of two surveys distributed by Cooperativa Sociale Aeris during Covid19 pandemic to families attending its Early Childhood Services dedicated to 0-3 aged children. Aeris is a social enterprise based in northern Italy that deals with socio-educational and welfare services. One of Aeris activities deals with the management of the ten Early Childhood Services located in the northern Italy which are dedicated to 0-3 aged children. After the school closure occurred the 24th of February 2020, Aeris organized online activities to keep contacts with families, to support children as well as their parents. With the aim of assessing if the adopted organization and proposed activities had positive feedback on families, a first survey was distributed in May 2020 and a second survey was distributed in October 2020 to families attending the Early Childhood Services. Survey results are reported in this dataset. Even if several worldwide actions have been implemented to guarantee educational continuity during Covid19 pandemic, most of these actions targeted 3-18 years old children/adolescents, while the subgroup 0-3 was rarely included.
