Pinon-Juniper Dendrometer, Height, and Crown Area Measurements at Cerro Montosa, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2006-2009)
Allometry is a standard method of determining biomass and Net Primary Production of many trees. One of the standard variables used in such allometric regressions is bole diameter. On straight trunk trees measurements at breast height (DBH) taken using a DBH tape is adequate for quantifying changes in diameter over time. However, in scrub forests such as the Pinon Juniper PJ woodlands, common on the Sevilleta, both the pinon and particularly the junipers are relatively short and multi-trunked so that measurements must be taken near the ground and the consistency between measurements often lead to erroneous growth analysis. To reduce such discrepancy in readings, dendrometer bands were installed on 20 pinons and 20 junipers in the Cerro Montoso area where understory ANPP has been measured for some time. These dendrometers quantify the expansion (and contraction) of the tree bole through time. The beginning diameter at the time of installation was also measured and recorded. Heights of the 40 trees were also measured. The diameter of the foliage was measured across these trees at the widest point and then again on an axis perpendicular to this first reading. Readings of the dendrometers are repeated on about a monthly basis through the growing season. Heights of the trees are done on an annual basis. Measurements are collected to quantify the increase in bole diameter for a set of Pinons and Junipers in this area over time.
Tree crowns of the north-west corner of the permanent sample area in the Kaluzhskiye Zaseki Nature Reserve

The studies were conducted in the Kaluga Zaseki Nature Reserve on a permanent sample plot (PSP) established in an old-growth broadleaved forest. The stand on the PSP has a complex structure, consisting of several tiers. There are 6 species of broad-leaved trees in the stand: oak (Quercus robur), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), elm (Ulmus glabra), sharp-leaved maple (Acer platanoides), field maple (A. campestre), linden (Tilia cordata) and 2 small-leaved trees - birch (Betula spp.) and aspen (Populus tremula). The oldest oak trees are about 300 years old. The size of the PPP is 440 × 200 m, this work was done on a 40 × 40 m plot located in the northwest corner of the PSP. For tree detection, orthophotomaps were used based on aerial photography materials taken with a DJI Phantom IV Pro quadcopter. Photogrammetric processing was carried out in Agisoft Metashape software (version 1.6.1.10009).

The data set contains two fragments of multi-season orthophotos in tif format and corresponding files in shp., dbh. and shx. formats, which contain information on crown boundaries and species of marked trees.

Distribution. NW Madgascar, found discontinuously in the coast S of the Manambolo River, from where the distribution swings inland to the uplands before touching the coast again N and E of the Mahavavy River; reports of the Crowned Sifaka as far S as the Sakay River, as far E to Andanotongo, and SE beyond Tsiroanomandidy suggest that its distribution is more complicated than originally believed. Decken's (PF. deckeniz) and Crowned sifakas are often found in the same areas, although the Crowned Sifaka tends to be found further inland than the more coastal Decken's Sifaka. In general, the boundary between these two species is the Mahavavy River, while the Betsiboka River separates the Crowned Sifaka from Coquerel's Sifaka (PF. coquereli). in Indriidae

Distribution. CW Madagascar, found mainly between the Manambolo and Mahavavy rivers, the S limit of its distribution does not extend to the Tsiribihina River (which marks the N limit of Verreaux's Sifaka, P. verreauxi). This species and the Crowned Sifaka (PF. coronatus) are often found in the same areas, although the latter tends to be found further inland than the more coastal Decken's Sifaka. in Indriidae
