Improvement of editorial quality of journals indexed in DOAJ
<p>In 2013, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) completely changed the inclusion criteria and journal evaluation process, starting to remove journals that not comply with these criteria. The present dataset contains 12.577 journals included in DOAJ since the launch of the Directory in 2002 until May 15th, 2016 that was examined and enriched with other data, in order to examinatethe results of the new process and its capability to improve the quality of the directory and the reliability of the contained information.</p>

Open access publishers: the DOAJ Seal profile
<p>The DOAJ database was created in 2003 and includes almost 14,000 peer-reviewed open access journals covering all knowledge areas, published in 130 countries. There is a selective process to be followed to assure the quality of the titles. DOAJ is maintained by Infrastructure Services for Open Access (IS4OA) and its funding is derived from donations (40% from publishers and 60% from the public sector). DOAJ introduced a quality distinction, called the DOAJ Seal, to identify the most prominent journals. There are 1354 journals (around 10% of the total) that have been awarded the Seal.</p> <p>The search strategy involved using the Seal option, then ranking the journals to identify the biggest publishers, the number of journals and the number of articles. We have extracted the following indicators from DOAJ: publisher, title, ISSN, country, number of articles, knowledge area (according to the DOAJ classification), value of article processing charges in USD, time for publication in weeks, and year of indexing in DOAJ.</p>

Publishers of journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
<p>The file contains all publishers of journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).</p> <p>On August 1, 2017, 9,621 journals were listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Only 32 publishers published more than 20 of these journals and thus have a quantitatively significant influence on Open Access. PLOS can not be found among them, but still has influence, but more qualitative than quantitative.</p> <p>These 32 publishers publish 2,950 journals, which are 31% of all journals listed in the DOAJ. At this date, the DOAJ reported 7,474 publishers, thus 0.43% of all DOAJ-listed publishers produced 31% of the journals.</p> <p>Of these 2,950 journals, 1,641 (56%) are in the hand of publishers who already dominate the market in the subscription model: e.g. Elsevier, Springer Nature (including BioMed Central, Frontiers), Wiley, SAGE, De Gruyter, Taylor & Francis, OUP, Wolters Kluwer).</p> <p>The data was gathered at August 1, 2017 using the Directory of Open Access Journals web interface. The total number of journals at this point of time was 9,621.</p>
Towards a plan S gap analysis: open access potential across disciplines using Web of Science and DOAJ
<p>Dataset accompanying two blogposts: </p> <p><a href="https://101innovations.wordpress.com/2018/12/05/oa-potential-journals-and-publications-across-disciplines/">https://101innovations.wordpress.com/2018/12/05/oa-potential-journals-and-publications-across-disciplines/</a></p> <p><a href="https://101innovations.wordpress.com/2018/12/05/gold-oa-journals-in-wos-and-doaj/">https://101innovations.wordpress.com/2018/12/05/gold-oa-journals-in-wos-and-doaj/</a></p> <p> </p> <p>In the proposed <a href="https://www.coalition-s.org/feedback/">implementation guidelines</a> for Plan S, it has become clear there will be, for the coming years at least, three ways to open access (OA) that are compliant with Plan S:</p> <ul> <li>publication in full open access journals and platforms</li> <li>deposit in open access repositories of author accepted manuscript (AAM) or publisher version (VOR)</li> <li>publishing in hybrid journals that are part of transformative agreements</li> </ul> <p>Additional requirements concern <em>copyright</em> (copyright retention by authors or institutions), <em>licensing</em> (CC-BY, CC-BY-SA or CC0), <em>embargo periods</em> (no embargo's) and <em>technical requirements</em> for open access journals, platforms and repositories.</p> <p>To get a first indication as to what that potential for open access is across different disciplines, we looked at a particular subset of journals, namely those in Web of Science. For a number of (sub)disciplines, we identified the proportion of full gold, hybrid and closed journals in Web of Science, as well as the proportion of hybrid and closed journals that allows green open access by archiving AAM/VOR in repositories. We also looked at the number of publications from 2017 (articles & reviews) that were actually made open access (or not) under each of these models.</p> <p>We fully acknowledge the practical decision toi use Web of Science leads to limitation and bias in the results. In particular this concerns a bias against:</p> <ul> <li>recently launched journals</li> <li>non-traditional journal types</li> <li>smaller journals not (yet) meeting the technical requirements of WoS</li> <li>journals in languages other than English</li> <li>journals from non-Western regions</li> </ul> <p>To further explore this bias, and give context to the interpretation of results derived from looking at full gold OA journals in Web of Science only, we analyzed the inclusion of DOAJ journals in WoS per major discipline.</p> <p>We also looked at the proportion of DOAJ journals (and articles/reviews therein) in different parts of the Web of Science Core Collection that we used: either in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) / Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) /Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), or in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).</p>
