Historical Plat Maps of Dane County Digitized and Converted to GIS (1962-2005)

We constructed a time-series spatial dataset of parcel boundaries for the period 1962-2005, in roughly 4-year intervals, by digitizing historical plat maps for Dane County and combining them with the 2005 GIS digital parcel dataset. The resulting datasets enable the consistent tracking of subdivision and development for all parcels over a given time frame. The process involved 1) dissolving and merging the 2005 digital Dane County parcel dataset based on contiguity and name, 2) further merging 2005 parcels based on the hard copy 2005 Plat book, and then 3) the reverse chronological merging of parcels to reconstruct previous years, at 4-year intervals, based on historical plat books. Additional land use information such as 1) whether a structure was actually constructed (using the companion digitized aerial photo dataset), 2) cover crop, and 3) permeable surface area, can be added to these datasets at a later date.

Chloride Concentrations, Conductivity, and Water Temperature Data from Upper Yahara River Watershed Tributaries in Dane County, WI: December 2019 – April 2021

Conductivity and chloride were measured for 2 years in nine tributaries of Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in Dane County, WI. HOBO Conductivity loggers continuously measured absolute conductivity and water temperature every 30 minutes. Breaks in data collection were due to a calibration period or if the loggers were out of the water. Grab samples for chloride concentration occurred weekly or biweekly. Conductivity and water temperature were measured with a field meter at each sampling excursion. This data was needed for a master’s research thesis with the goal of characterizing the spatial distribution and loading of chloride in the Upper Yahara River Watershed.

Greenhouse gas fluxes and concentrations and associated habitat data in western Dane County, Wisconsin, USA, streams during the 2018 growing season

Streams are often sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), particularly in agricultural regions where sediment and organic matter inputs can be substantial. Floods are occurring more often and more intensely in southern Wisconsin, one such agricultural region, due to climate change and few studies have investigated how floods impact stream CO2 and CH4 fluxes and concentrations. I compared concentrations and fluxes of CO2 and CH4 with greater than 30 variables representing in-stream and watershed attributes at 10 sites in mixed agricultural and suburban locations in southern Wisconsin. Sampling was conducted 10 times at each site during the growing season (May-November) in 2018

North Temperate Lakes site, station Dane County, WI (FIPS 55025), study of county area in units of squareKilometers on a yearly timescale

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from North Temperate Lakes (NTL) contains county area measurements in squareKilometers units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
