Data for the paper, "Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use"

These data were collected for the paper, "Social media data for environmental sustainability: a critical review of opportunities, threats and ethical use" published in One Earth. It includes a database of studies applying social media data in environmental sustainability research, which were collected and reviewed in full by the authors. Rather than providing a comprehensive summary of all relevant literature like in a systematic review, our objective was to take stock and evaluate the previous body of work in the field in order to promote conceptual innovation from its critical examination. Building on a set of 169 studies collected in a previous systematic review of social media data applications in environmental research (Ghermandi and Sinclair 2019), the database includes additional relevant studies that were identified by snowballing previous references and adding further gray and scientific academic articles known to the authors. For studies to be included in our analysis, they had to involve the use of data from one or more social media platforms and investigate human interactions with and/or impacts on the environment. We relied on a broad definition of social media including any website or application that enables users to create and share content or to participate in social networking (e.g., blogging sites, recommendation sites, and online forums). We further strengthened the analysis by including insights from additional literature on social media that do not have a direct application to environmental sustainability (e.g., studies on biases in social media data). The final database consists of 415 studies, which were published between 2011 and 2021.

Ghermandi, Andrea, and Michael Sinclair. The Ethics of Data

The talk gives a very short introduction into some of the themes within the ethics of data sharing. What are (some of) the ethical questions surrounding data sharing and use? What is the relationship between ethics and other normative domains, such as law and institutionalized (ethical) codes? And what’s the point of ethical reflection where such more tangible (e.g., legal) rules already exist?

Supplemental data for: Current ethics policies in 36 preprint servers

Preprints, which are non–peer-reviewed articles, offer a rapid dissemination of information, and have gained traction in academic publishing, often serving as the publishing precursors of peer-reviewed journals. Given that many peer-reviewed journals, with often strict ethics policies, allow the prior publication of papers as preprints, we were interested in appreciating the ethics policies in place in preprint servers. We selected 36 preprint servers from the ASAPbio list to base our assessment. We found that that only 8% of analyzed preprint servers contained a dedicated section on the server's ethics policy. As documents that purportedly transmit scientific information, including data-based evidence, we believe that there is a need to fortify the stringency of ethics policies in preprint servers, even standardize them across ASAPbio-listed preprint servers.

Towards a practical framework to "ethics by design" data sharing and machine learning applications

Responsible AI and data-driven applications can only be developed when teams integrate the ethical principles directly into the development process. An important prerequisite is the involvement of a diverse group of stakeholders who build and are affected by AI and data systems. We present a practical framework that helps teams build trustworthy AI systems and data strategies by combining expertise and training from philosophy, law, machine learning and design.

Data from: The interactions of ethical notions and moral values of immediate stakeholders of immunisation services in two Indian states: a qualitative study
OBJECTIVES: This study examines the existing norms regarding immunization within the communities and the ethical notions that govern the action of different health professionals and their collective synergistic or conflicting effect on governance of the programme. Design: We used descriptive and analytical qualitative methods as it suited the research question. SETTING: The data was collected from areas under 16 Primary Health Centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu identified through three-step sampling process. PARTICIPANTS: This involved in-depth interview with stakeholders including providers, beneficiaries and other stakeholders, focus group discussions with mother of under five children and participant and non-participant observations of vaccination related activities. RESULTS: Unlike most other ethical analysis that looks at ethics of vaccination policies, the interactions of normative principles and notions are analysed in this article. Moral obligation of parents towards their children, beneficence of health care providers and the utilitarian aspirations of the state are the key normative principles involved. Our analysis points to the interplay of both synergy and conflict in ethical notions and moral values in the context of immunisation services. Paternalistic interventions like special immunisation campaigns against polio and Japanese encephalitis are a case in point: they generate conflict at the normative level and create mistrust. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of vaccination policies and programmes need to go beyond factors that assess monitory benefits or herd immunity. Understanding the interactions normative notions that shape the social organisation of the providers and the users of vaccination is important in creating a sustainable environment for the programme.

Mining the first 100 days: Human and data ethics in Twitter research

This dataset consists of tweet identifiers for tweets harvested between November 28, 2016, following the election of Donald Trump through the end of the first 100 days of his administration. Data collection ended May 1, 2017.

Tweets were harvested using multiple methods described below. The total dataset consists of 218,273,152 tweets. Because of the different methods used to harvest tweets, there may be some duplication.

Filtered survey data for: AOS professional ethics committee

In response to a growing need to foster ethical behavior within scientific societies, the American Ornithological Society's (AOS) professional ethics committee conduct a survey of members in spring 2021 to identify the primary challenges and ethical conduct concerns. The survey indicated that the AOS has a strong culture of professional ethics and highlighted areas needing improvement. Participants identified discrimination and lack of inclusivity (44%), scientific fraud and abuse in data and publications (35%), and sexual harassment (31%) as the highest potential risks for unethical behavior in our organization. Moreover, approximately one-third of respondents (34%) had personally witnessed or experienced unethical behavior as an AOS member. A smaller proportion (16%) felt pressure to compromise their work standards in ornithology. These findings are likely representative of broader patterns that professional, scientific societies face as they seek to provide safe, welcoming, and thoughtful environments for researchers to share their work, gain valuable feedback, and develop collaborations. The survey results also create a framework for workshops, training opportunities, and disseminating information within the AOS and, ideally, with the broader, international community of ornithologists.

Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum (Dataset)

This repository contains de-identified evaluation data collected as part of the Ethical Considerations of Data: A Curriculum for Health Sciences Librarians pilot as well as the data collection instrument used.

These files are related to a forthcoming JMLA Case Study titled Engaging Health Sciences Librarians on Data Ethics: Case Study on a Pilot Curriculum.

Paper Abstract:
Three medical librarians developed a pilot curriculum designed to address perceived gaps in librarian training in regards to data ethics. One of the team members had additional academic training in ethics and bioethics, which helped to provide an intellectual foundation for this project. Our three-module class aimed to provide students with an overview of major ethical frameworks, skills to apply those frameworks to data issues, and an exploration of ethical considerations and challenges faced in libraries. Participants from library schools and professional library organizations were invited to apply. Twenty-four LIS professionals and students attended the Zoom-based class and shared their thoughts and attitudes by means of a survey after each session and in a focus group after the conclusion of the class.
