Continuous stream CO2 and temperature data and sensor calibration grab samples from five NEON sites (CARI, COMO, KING, MART, WALK), August 2021-April 2024.

This package contains: 1) sensor-based measurements of dissolved CO2 concentration and temperature, and 2) dissolved CO2 concentration from grab samples that were used to calibrate the sensor data, collected at five stream sites in the NEON network (CARI- Caribou Creek, AK; COMO- Como Creek, CO; KING- Kings Creek, KS; MART- Martha Creek, WA; and WALK- Walker Branch, TN) between August 2021 - April 2024. The grab sample dataset contains a combination of samples collected by NEON (DP1.20097.001) and additional samples collected by project personnel. All samples were collected using the headspace equilibration method, and dissolved CO2 concentrations were calculated using the 'neonDissGas' R package (https://github.com/NEONScience/NEON-dissolved-gas). The sensor dataset contains CO2 concentrations measured with an eosGP CO2 gas probe, averaged to 15-minute intervals and corrected to align with grab sample concentrations using a site-specific grab versus sensor regression. Due to inaccuracies in the eosGP temperature data, we instead include the temperature data from NEON that was used to convert CO2 between units of ppmv and umol/L (DP1.20053.001 for CARI, KING, MART, and WALK, and data from the multiparameter sonde for COMO). All NEON data used in this data package references the RELEASE-2025 version of each data product (downloaded February 2025).

Survival data of Martes Americana and landscape variables associated with mortality events

To test the effects of seasonal heterogeneity on a reintroduced carnivore, American martens (Martes americana), we compared metrics of local and season-specific heterogeneity to traditional forest metrics on the survival of 242 individuals across 8 years and predicted a survival landscape for 13 reintroduction sites. We identified a set of variables that characterized potentially important drivers of marten survival, allowing for a comparison between heterogeneity metrics (i.e., complexity of vegetation, land cover, and abiotic conditions) and landscape variables representing composition and configuration. We summarized environmental conditions encountered by individuals by extracting landscape variables and measures of heterogeneity within 95% kernel density estimate. To test the influence of landscape variables and heterogeneity on survival, we modeled mortality risk from time-to-event data using a Bayesian framework.

Data from: Pollen flow in fragmented landscapes maintains genetic diversity following stand-replacing disturbance in a neotropical pioneer tree, Vochysia ferruginea Mart.

In forests with gap disturbance regimes, pioneer tree regeneration is typically abundant following stand-replacing disturbances, whether natural or anthropogenic. Differences in pioneer tree density linked to disturbance regime can influence pollinator behaviour and impact on mating patterns and genetic diversity of pioneer populations. Such mating pattern shifts can manifest as higher selfing rates and lower pollen diversity in old growth forest populations. In secondary forest, where more closely related pollen donors occur, an increase in biparental inbreeding is a potential problem. Here, we investigate the consequences of secondary forest colonisation on the mating patterns and genetic diversity of open-pollinated progeny arrays for the long-lived, self-compatible pioneer tree, Vochysia ferruginea, at two Costa Rican sites. Five microsatellite loci were screened across adult and seed cohorts from old growth forest with lower density, secondary forest with higher density, and isolated individual trees in pasture. Progeny from both old growth and secondary forest contexts were predominantly outcrossed (tm=1.00) and experienced low levels of biparental inbreeding (tm−ts=0.00–0.04). In contrast to predictions, our results indicated that the mating patterns of V. ferruginea are relatively robust to density differences between old growth and secondary forest stands. In addition, we observed that pollen-mediated gene flow possibly maintained the genetic diversity of open-pollinated progeny arrays in stands of secondary forest adults. As part of a natural resource management strategy, we suggest that primary forest remnants should be prioritised for conservation to promote restoration of genetic diversity during forest regeneration.
