Detecting small changes in tropical forests from space... data and code for thesis chapter 4

<p>SAR and UAV-LiDAR data used in chapter 4 of my thesis&nbsp;<em>Detecting small changes in tropical forests from space: experiments using synthetic aperture radar.&nbsp;</em>This content has also been submitted for peer review in Frontiers in Remote Sensing.</p> <p>DEM_timeseries_3m contains phase height and coherence from TanDEM-X InSAR high-resolution spolight images, processed by Jose-Luis Bueso-Bello at DLR. NetCDF format, dimensions latitude, longitude, time.</p> <p>TDX_descending_intensity contains intensity from the same TanDEM-X time series, covering an area of the Madre de Dios region in Peru. These data were processed by Harry Carstairs using ESA&#39;s SNAP software.</p> <p>UAV_change_1m_mask is a raster showing the change in canopy height at the study site between June 2019 and July 2021, according to two UAV LiDAR campaigns, with 1m pixels, and with areas with low point density masked out.</p> <p>CODE.zip contains python scripts and notebooks used to collate the data, create change detection metrics, develop SAR models of canopy height, and produce the figures.</p> <p>Funded by European Research Council (ERC) grant to the Tropical Forest Degradation Experiment (FODEX).</p>

Data on different types of green spaces and their accessibility in the seven largest urban regions in Finland

<p>This repository contains data described in the&nbsp;article &quot;Data on different types of green spaces and their accessibility in the seven largest urban regions in Finland&quot; (Heikinheimo et al. 2023) and used in the research article &quot;Associations of neighborhood-level socioeconomic status, accessibility, and quality of green spaces in Finnish urban regions&quot; (Viinikka et al. 2023).&nbsp;<br> <br> This repository contains data on green space quality and path distances to different types of green spaces. The path distances represent green space accessibility using active travel modes (walking, cycling). The path distances were calculated using the pedestrian street network across the seven largest urban regions in Finland. We derived the green space typology from the Urban Atlas Data that is available across functional urban areas in Europe and enhanced it with national data on water bodies, conservation areas and recreational facilities and routes from Finland. We extracted the walkable street network from OpenStreetMap and calculated shortest paths to different types of green spaces using open-source Python programming tools. Network distances were calculated up to ten kilometers from each green space edge and the distances were aggregated into a 250 m x 250 m statistical grid that is interoperable with various statistical data from Finland. The geospatial data files representing the different types of green spaces, network distances across the seven urban regions, as well as the processing and analysis scripts are shared in an open repository. Dataset linking to the paper "Exploring characteristics of national forest inventories for integration with global space-based forest biomass data"

<p>The dataset&nbsp;links to the study titled &ldquo;Exploring characteristics of national forest inventories for integration with global space-based forest biomass data&rdquo;. This study is published in the journal &ldquo;Science of the Total Environment&rdquo; and the publication can be found at&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.157788">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2022.157788</a>. &nbsp;The dataset contains four csv files that were used to produce the results and other figures in the paper. The description of the individual data files contained in the dataset&nbsp;is given below.</p> <p><strong>NFI availability and characteristics data:&nbsp;</strong>The data file &ldquo;NFI_availability_characteristics.csv&rdquo; contains data on the total number of NFIs, the NFI extent,&nbsp;and the year of the most recent NFI &nbsp;in countries with NFI as reported in FRA 2020 country reports. The respective data variables in the data file are termed as Number_of_NFI, Latest_NFI_extent_FRA2020, and Latest_NFI_year_FRA2020 (NFI years generally refer to the years of data collection). In addition, the data file contains data on the region and tropical domain per country. The tropical and subtropical countries were considered tropical in the analysis and interpretation of the results. These data were used to produce Figure 2 of the study. ArcMap 10.7.1 was used for this purpose.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>National biomass intercomparison data:&nbsp;</strong>The data file &ldquo;national_biomass_intercomparison.csv&rdquo; contains national forest AGB data&nbsp;for the year 2018 from FRA 2020 and CCI Biomass product that were used in the national biomass intercomparison analysis. The total (tons) and average space-based AGB (tons/ha) are&nbsp;extracted directly from the CCI Biomass Map 2018 for each country included in the study. The processing is done in Python and R environments. The spatial resolution of the map is 100 m. The average FRA AGB data in tons per ha was compiled from FRA 2020 country reports. The total FRA AGB data (tons) was estimated by multiplying each country&#39;s average FRA AGB data with FRA forest area data (in ha).</p> <p>The data unit for total AGB was converted from tons to gigaton (Gt) in intercomparison analysis. The total CCI Map AGB estimates used in the analysis are termed as CCI_MAP_AGB_Gt in the data file and the average as CCI_Map_AGB_tons.ha. Similarly, the total FRA AGB data are termed as FRA_AGB_Gt and the average as FRA_AGB_ton.ha. The NFI availability and temporality&nbsp;were also used in intercomparison analysis and this data is termed as Latest_NFI_year_FRA2020 in the data file. The data were used to produce Figure 3 of the study in the R environment.</p> <p><strong>NFI plot design characteristics:&nbsp;</strong>The data file named &ldquo;NFI_plot_design_characteristics.csv&rdquo; contains data on variables that were used in the analysis of NFI plot designs in 46 tropical countries.&nbsp; This data file mainly contains the data that was used to produce Figure 4 and Figure 6 in the R environment. The value &ldquo;uniform&rdquo; in the sampling_stratification variable means no stratification was used in the sampling design. The variable name &ldquo;psu&rdquo; stands for primary sampling unit (both cluster and single plots), &ldquo;psu_distance_km&rdquo; for the distance between primary sampling units in km, &ldquo;cluster_plotdis_m&rdquo;&nbsp; for the distance between plots in meter in the cluster, &ldquo;plotsize_ha&rdquo; for plot (single and cluster plots ) size in ha, &ldquo;plotshape&rdquo; for plot shapes (single and cluster plots), &ldquo;ILUA&rdquo; for Integrated Land Use Assessment.&nbsp; The data were compiled from the latest NFI design manuals and NFI reports.</p> <p><strong>NFI years:&nbsp;</strong>The data file &ldquo;NFI_years_tropical_countries_data.csv&rdquo; contains data on NFI years of the latest NFI in 46 tropical countries that were used to produce Figure 1 using ArcMap 10.7.1. The years generally refer to the last years of data collection. Data were compiled from the latest country NFI design manual or NFI report. This included both ongoing and completed NFI.</p>

<p>GCaMP6s calcium imaging data set recorded from freely behaving mice performing open field and 2-choice decision-making tasks using miniscopes. Mice were implanted in the right dorsomedial striatum and three types of output neurons were genetically targeted using transgenic Cre-lines. The data set comprises single-cell spatial filters and calcium activity traces extracted using CaImAn (https://github.com/flatironinstitute/CaImAn) as well as behavioral event logs and tracking coordinates. <p>This repository contains all raw and derived data produced as part of the <a href="https://rbtl-fs22.github.io/website/">ETH Zurich course &quot;Research Beyond the Lab: Open Science and Research Methods for a Global Engineer&quot; (151-8102-00L)</a> offered in spring term 2022.</p> <p>Students were assigned teams of four to conduct a collaborative research project broadly addressing the theme of &ldquo;Trash in the Public Spaces of Zurich&rdquo; in collaboration with <a href="https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ted/de/index/entsorgung_recycling.html">Entsorgung &amp; Recycling Z&uuml;rich (ERZ)</a>, the waste management department at Stadt Z&uuml;rich.</p> <p>Research methods and design are taught in the first half of the course. Surveys and a waste characterisation study are then designed based on the research questions students have developed in their respective teams. The collected raw data is used in the course to teach principles of research data management, tidy data structures, reproducible research with R &amp; RStudio, and collaboration and version control with Git &amp; GitHub.</p>

<p>This repository contains reduced image mosaics from the Hubble and Webb Space Telescopes of&nbsp;the galaxy cluster RXJ-2129.</p> <p>Data were processed with the <a href="https://github.com/gbrammer/grizli">grizli</a>&nbsp;software pipeline, as described by <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.10936">Valentino et al. (2023, ApJ, in press)</a>, with the software and observatory calibrations available as of October 2022.</p> <p>For a given broad-band filter, the science data are given in the &quot;sci.fits&quot; files.&nbsp; Inverse variance weight images are provided in the &quot;wht.fits&quot; files.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Aperture photometry following the methodology described by Valentino et al. is provided in &quot;rxj2129-grizli-v4.0-fix_phot_apcorr.fits&quot;, and photometric redshift estimates derived with the <a href="https://github.com/gbrammer/eazy-py/">eazy-py&nbsp;</a>software are tabulated in &quot;rxj2129-grizli-v4.0-fix.zout.fits&quot;.</p>

Supplementary data for the journal article "Quantifying the impact of 3D pore space morphology on diffusive mass transport in loam and sand"

<p>Binarized cutouts (black=pore, white=soil) of 3D CT images of soil samples from loam and sand together with geometrical descriptors and diffusive properties computed on these cutouts. The geometrical descriptors include, among others, porosity, specific surface area, geodesic tortuosity, geometric tortuosity, constrictivity, mean chord length and mean of spherical contact distribution. Diffusion is quantified by the so-called M-factor which equals the ratio of the effective and intrinsic diffusivity.</p> <p>This data supplements the journal article &quot;Quantifying the impact of 3D pore space morphology on diffusive mass transport in loam and sand&quot;.
