Improving the Developer Experience with a Low-Code ProcessModelling Language: Companion site

ACM. https://doi.org/10.1145/3239372.3239387</strong></em></p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Context</strong><strong>: </strong>The OutSystems Platform is a development environment composed of several DSLs, used to specify, quickly build and validate web and mobile applications. The DSLs allow users to model different perspectives such as interfaces and data models, define custom business logic and construct process models.</p> <p><strong>Problem</strong><strong>: </strong>TheDSL for process modelling (Business Process Technology (BPT)), has a low adoption rate and is perceived as having usability problems hampering its adoption. This is problematic given the language maintenance costs.</p> <p><strong>Method:</strong> We used a combination of interviews, a critical review of BPT using the “Physics of Notation” and empirical evaluations of BPT using the System Usability Scale (SUS)and the NASA Task Load indeX (TLX), to develop a new version ofBPT, taking these inputs and Outsystems’ engineers culture into account.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Evaluations conducted with 25 professional soft-ware engineers showed an increase of the semantic transparency on the new version, from 31% to 69%, an increase in the correctness of responses, from 51% to 89%, an increase in the SUS score, from 42.25 to 64.78, and a decrease of the TLX score, from 36.50 to 20.78. These differences were statistically significant.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> These results suggest the new version of BPT significantly improved the developer experience of the previous version. Thermophysical properties for the published article "Experiments and modelling on ASDEX Upgrade and WEST in support of tool development for tokamak reactor armour melting assessments"
<p>In order to model the macroscopic metallic melt motion realized in the poor-versus-efficient thermionic emitter leading edge exposures in the ASDEX-Upgrade outer divertor [1], the material library of the MEMENTO melt dynamics code, that previously only concerned tungsten [2] and beryllium [3], had to be extended to iridium and niobium. </p> <p>Reliable experimental data have been analyzed for the latent heats, specific isobaric heat capacity, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, mass density, vapor pressure, work function, total hemispherical emissivity and absolute thermoelectric power from the room temperature up to the normal boiling point of iridium and niobium as well as for the surface tension and the dynamic viscosity across the liquid state. Analytical expressions are recommended for the temperature dependence of these thermophysical properties, which involve high temperature extrapolations given the absence of extended liquid iridium and liquid niobium measurements. Dataset of Open-Source Software Developers Labeled by their Experience Level and Associated with their Software Metrics
<p>This dataset contains 703 anonymized developers extracted from 17 open-source projects from GitHub. Projects were chosen because they use:</p> <ul> <li>the Java programming language</li> <li>the <a href="https://spring.io/projects/spring-framework">Spring framework</a></li> <li><a href="https://maven.apache.org/">Maven</a> / <a href="https://gradle.org/">Gradle</a> build tools</li> </ul> <p>For all these developers, 23 software metrics were calculated for each project to which they contribute. Can Developers Prompt? A Controlled Experiment for Code Documentation Generation [Replication Package]
<h2>Artifact Summary</h2> <p>This repository contains the replication package for the paper 'Can Developers Prompt? A Controlled Experiment for Code Documentation Generation,' presented at the <em><a href="https://conf.researchr.org/home/icsme-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">40th IEEE International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution (ICSME'24)</a></em>.</p> <p>The purpose of the package is to facilitate the verification and reproduction of the study results. It provides all data of the controlled experiment, the developed <em>Visual Studio Code (VS Code)</em> extension, as well as the slides of the conference presentations.</p> <h2>Paper Abstract</h2> <p>Large language models (LLMs) bear great potential for automating tedious development tasks such as creating and maintaining code documentation. However, it is unclear to what extent developers can effectively prompt LLMs to create concise and useful documentation. We report on a controlled experiment with 20 professionals and 30 computer science students tasked with code documentation generation for two Python functions. The experimental group freely entered ad-hoc prompts in a ChatGPT-like extension of Visual Studio Code, while the control group executed a predefined few-shot prompt. Our results reveal that professionals and students were unaware of or unable to apply prompt engineering techniques. Especially students perceived the documentation produced from ad-hoc prompts as significantly less readable, less concise, and less helpful than documentation from prepared prompts. Some professionals produced higher quality documentation by just including the keyword Docstring in their ad-hoc prompts. While students desired more support in formulating prompts, professionals appreciated the flexibility of ad-hoc prompting. Participants in both groups rarely assessed the output as perfect. Instead, they understood the tools as support to iteratively refine the documentation. An empirical study on the influence of developers' experience on software test code quality
<p>Software developers' engagement in open-source software projects lies in different levels of participation, e.g., core or peripheral developers. Recent studies have investigated the role of developers' contributions and their influence on software quality. However, few studies investigate the relationship between the developers' experience and test code quality in software projects. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between the developers' experience and the test code quality from the perspective of test smells. We performed an empirical study to analyze the insertion and removal of test smells in four open-source Java projects. We collected 18 test smells and calculated their authorship through the projects' Tags. The four software projects contain 386 test classes and 5,178 test smells. We found out that the insertion of 67.28\% of test smells occurs during the test class creation, and the removal of 20.88\% of test smells occurs during the evolution of projects. In addition, core developers are responsible for inserting 88.91\% and removing 89.82\% test smells. Core developers insert and remove more test smells than the peripheral developers. Most test smell removal is due to test code deletion, which may indicate that both core and peripheral developers are unaware of test smells in test code.</p>

CESM experiments for intraseasonal oscillation intensity changes in El Niño and La Niña developing summers
<p> Experiments are conducted using version 5.2 of Community Atmospheric Model (CAM-5.2; https://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.1/cam/). CAM is the atmosphere component of Community Earth System Model (CESM) developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The model resolution used in this study is f19_g16, with f19 finite volume grid (1.9º latitude by 2.5º longitude) for the atmosphere and land components combined with the gx1v6 displaced pole grid (approximately 1º) for the ocean and ice components.</p> <p> Four sets of numerical experiments are performed in this study:</p> <ol> <li>Full SST forcing simulation (full-SST run): The CAM is forced by global monthly OI SST and integrated from January 1982 to December 2020.</li> <li>Climatological SST forcing simulation (CLM-SST run): The CAM is integrated for 30 years forced by global climatological mean monthly SST obtained from OI SST data for the period of January 1982 to December 2020.</li> <li>Tropical central-eastern Pacific SST forcing simulation (CEP-SST run): The SST forcing field is composed of two parts: total monthly SST in the domain of 15°S-15°N and 160°E-80°W and climatological mean monthly SST in the other regions. The CAM is integrated from January 1982 to December 2020.</li> <li>Sensitivity experiments of tropical central-eastern Pacific SST anomalies during ENSO events: Composite SST anomalies in El Niño and La Niña events in the region of 15°S-15°N and 160°E-80°W and the above SST anomaly fields multiplied by -1 are added to climatological mean monthly SST from May to December. Climatological mean monthly SST is used in the other regions and months. The CAM is integrated for 30 years in these experiments. These experiments are referred to as EPEL, EPLA, EPEL-reverse and EPLA-reverse, respectively.</li> </ol>
Activity in developing prefrontal cortex is shaped by sleep and sensory experience
<p>In developing rats, behavioral state exerts a profound modulatory influence on neural activity throughout the sensorimotor system, including primary motor cortex (M1). We hypothesized that similar state-dependent modulation occurs in prefrontal cortical areas with which M1 forms functional connections. Here, using 8- and 12-day-old rats cycling freely between sleep and wake, we record neural activity in M1, secondary motor cortex (M2), and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). At both ages in all three areas, neural activity increased during active sleep (AS) compared with wake. Also, regardless of behavioral state, neural activity in all three areas increased during periods when limbs were moving. The movement-related activity in M2 and mPFC, like that in M1, is driven by sensory feedback. Our results, which diverge from those of previous studies using anesthetized pups, demonstrate that AS-dependent modulation and sensory responsivity extend to prefrontal cortex. These findings expand the range of possible factors shaping the activity-dependent development of higher-order cortical areas.</p>
