Raw and analysed data for contribution paper "Investigation of deoxidation mechanisms on Cu surfaces in a dielectric barrier discharge plasma"

<p><strong>Abstract</strong><br> In this study, we present a laboratory setup for the deoxidation of 10 &times; 10 mm2 samples via dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and we show results for the deoxidation of copper in an Ar/H2 atmosphere at 1000 hPa. The effect of combined heat and DBD plasma treatment was investigated by heating surfaces up to 250 &deg;C during plasma operation. All results were compared for surfaces before and after plasma treatment. The chemical structure of surfaces was studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and the morphology was measured via Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Additionally, the properties of the plasma during the reduction of copper oxides were investigated via Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES).</p>

Raw and analyzed data for manuscript "Dielectric barrier discharge plasma reduction of oxidized copper surfaces in an Ar/SiH4 atmosphere"

<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>Nowadays, cold plasma techniques like dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas have attracted considerable interest in view of high deoxidation efficiencies as well as relative simplicity of setups. Although DBD plasma deoxidation of copper has been mainly studied in Ar/H2 mixtures, there is no information on reduction performance of such methods in other protective atmospheres. In this study, the reduction of natively oxidized copper surfaces using a DBD plasma in an Ar/SiH4 atmosphere at 100&nbsp;hPa and 20&nbsp;&deg;C was investigated. The influence of a silane gas on the deoxidation performance was studied by varying the SiH4 concentration from 0.0 to 0.5&nbsp;vol%. An addition of a SiH4 gas to an Ar atmosphere results in the increase of the deoxidation effect of a DBD plasma, so almost all Cu2O was reduced after around 10&nbsp;s of treatment in 0.1&nbsp;vol% silane. Surface morphology analysis showed formation of particles after Ar/SiH4 plasma treatments, which can be cleaned from the surfaces by wiping. Additionally, characterization of the plasma phase indicated the presence of SiH* radicals, which likely play a role in the deoxidation effect. Moreover, an elimination of residual oxygen and nitrogen species in Ar by addition of SiH4 was observed.</p>

Analysed data for poster presentation "Dielectric barrier discharge plasma deoxidation of copper and iron surfaces"

<p>Removal of oxygen contaminations from metal surfaces during industrial fabrication processes is an important cleaning step mitigating the negative impact of native oxide layers on the performance of compounds. Different plasma deoxidation techniques were developed to remove such oxide layers. Although a large number of studies were focused on of low-pressure plasma techniques, there is the lack of information on the deoxidation effect of plasmas that operate in the atmospheric pressure range.</p>

Raw and analyzed data for manuscript "Reduction of copper surface oxide using a sub-atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge plasma"

<p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Oxide layers on metal surfaces adversely affect processability and material properties in many industrial applications. Although several plasma-based approaches for deoxidation were investigated in the past, oftentimes they either work under conditions expensive to create or require long processing times. In this study, the deoxidation effect of a non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge plasma in an Ar/H2 gas mixture at 100&nbsp;hPa and 20&nbsp;&deg;C was investigated on copper surfaces with a native oxide layer. The chemical structure of surfaces before and after deoxidation was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that ~98&nbsp;% of the surface lattice oxide Cu2O was reduced to Cu after around 20&nbsp;s of plasma treatment, whereas all oxygen contaminants were almost completely removed from Cu surface after around 50&nbsp;s. Additionally, the kinetics of the reduction of surface oxide was studied and a Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Erofeev-Kholmogorov kinetic model was proposed. The analysis of the morphology of surfaces was performed with atomic force microscopy (AFM), showing minor changes in the roughness after deoxidation. Moreover, optical emission spectroscopy (OES) showed atomic hydrogen radicals in the plasma phase, which likely causes deoxidation effect.</p>

Data from: Enhancement on the electrochemical properties of commercial coconut shell-based activated carbon by H2O dielectric barrier discharge plasma

Commercial coconut shell-based activated carbon (CSAC) has low specific capacitance and specific capacitance retention owing to its undeveloped pore structure and low proportion of heteroatoms. In this study, dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was used to enhance the specific capacitance and rate capability of CSAC. H2O was used as excited medium to introduce oxygen functional groups. The physicochemical properties of CSAC and CSAC modified by H2O plasma (HCSAC) were revealed by automated surface area and pore size analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). Electrochemical workstation was applied to investigate the electrochemical properties of CSAC and HCSAC. Obtained results showed that plasma modification improved the specific capacitance of CSAC by 64.8% (current density, 1 A g-1; electrolyte, 6 M KOH solution) within 100 seconds. This result is ascribed to the oxygen functional groups introduced to the surface of CSAC. It can also improve hydrophilicity and wettability of the carbon surface leading to an increase from 76.7% to 84.6% in specific capacitance retention. Furthermore, H2O plasma modification can introduce oxygen functional groups without destroying the initial pore structures of CSAC. In summary, we provide a simple, fast, environment-friendly modification method to enhance the electrochemical properties of CSAC.

Analysed data for poster presentation "Dielectric barrier discharge plasma reduction of iron oxides"

<p>Native surface oxides, which usually contaminate metals in ambient atmosphere, limit the performance in industrial applications like coating or welding. Different deoxidation techniques were developed to remove such oxide layers. Promising results were obtained for dielectic barrier discharge (DBD) hydrogen plasmas in deoxidation of copper at 20 &deg;C and 100 &ndash; 1000 hPa. In this study, we report the application of a DBD plasma for deoxidation of natively oxidized iron surfaces in an Ar/H2 atmosphere at 100 and 1000 hPa. Plasma treatments were performed at a discharge voltage of 10 kV and a frequency of 8.8 kHz at room temperature (RT) as well as in the combination with heating<br> &nbsp;</p>
