A survey of access to the digital collections of 195 UK GLAMs across internal and external platforms - Appendix 1 for A Culture of Copyright: A scoping study on open access to digital cultural heritage collections in the UK

<p>Created for the<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6242611"> &#39;A Culture of Copyright: A scoping study on open access to digital cultural heritage collections in the UK&#39; </a>report, this sample replicates and expands the Open galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAMs) Survey data extraction and methodology to include a range of GLAMs across the UK and new data points. The initial sample of 350 organisations included Independent Research Organisations (IROs) and Research Centre Institutes (RCIs), GLAMs associated with <a href="https://www.nationalcollection.org.uk/">Towards a National Collection</a> Foundation and Discovery projects, UK GLAMs in the Open GLAM Survey, and other UK GLAMs and related organisations. An initial review was performed to identify and remove organisations outside the scope of inquiry (<em>e.g.</em>, no permanent collections). The final sample included 195 organisations.</p> <p>From the final sample, 24 are IROs (all RCIs were removed). Another 32 are Universities (including GLAMs within universities). This brings the total number of organisations eligible for AHRC funding to 56 (or 28.6%). The remaining 140 include public and private GLAMs at national, regional and local levels (<em>e.g., </em>councils, historic buildings) and research initiatives or data aggregators (<em>e.g.,</em> Portable Antiquities Scheme, Culture Grid, Archaeology Data Service). Organisations are distributed across the UK as follows: Channel Islands (1 total); England (154 total); Isle of Man (1 total); Northern Ireland (5 total); Scotland (28 total); Wales (6 total).</p> <p>A survey of the copyright and open access policies of 63 GLAMs from the UK GLAM Sample is available on Zenodo at: <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6242559">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6242559</a></p>

<p>Prototyping can also include the development of toolkits for automatic content generation simulator, but in the case of an architectural environment, the components are too complex to be automatically generated. Furniture elements or the learning artifacts (i.e. content created by learners) can be converted to be viewed in X3D compatible browsers or included in online galleries (Figure 11). After functional and 3D content prototyping, certain components of the virtual campus can be easily modified and adapted as needed.</p>

Wikidata's linked data for cultural heritage digital resources: an evaluation based on the Europeana Data Model

<p>Wikidata is an open data source with many potential applications. Our study aims to evaluate the usability of Wikidata as a linked data source for acquiring richer descriptions of digital objects within the context of Europeana, a data aggregator from the cultural heritage domain. Specifically, we aim to crawl and convert Wikidata using the standard approaches and operations developed for the (Semantic) Web of Data, i.e. using technologies like linked data consumption and RDF(S)/OWL ontology expression and reasoning. We also seek to re-use existing &ldquo;semantic&rdquo; specifications, such as conversions to and from generic data models like Schema.org and SKOS. We have developed an experimental set-up and accompanying software to test the feasibility of this approach. We conclude that Wikidata&rsquo;s linked data is able to express an interesting level of semantics for cultural heritage, but quality can still be improved and a human operator still must assist linked data applications to interpret Wikidata&rsquo;s RDF.</p>

Unlocking born-digital literary heritage: The case of the Herman de Coninck floppy disks

<p>Datasets produced in the context of the research scenario &lsquo;<a href="https://clariahvl.hypotheses.org/tag/unlocking-born-digital-literary-heritage">Unlocking born-digital literary heritage: the case of the Herman de Coninck floppy disks&rsquo;</a><strong>&nbsp;</strong>in CLARIAH-VL. The aim of the research scenario was to partially &lsquo;unlock&rsquo; the digital files stored on the floppy disks in <a href="https://collectie.letterenhuis.be/ark:/24970/37a52c26-91da-5849-bccb-9cd6b012537d">Herman de Coninck's archive</a> in the collection of the <a href="https://letterenhuis.be">Letterenhuis</a> (Antwerp) by providing insights into their contents, grouping related files and linking the files with related files in the paper archive.</p> <p>Two datasets are provided: a list of all the persons and places mentioned in the files stored on the floppy disks (excluding De Coninck&rsquo;s personal communication) and a list of documents in De Coninck's archive related to the &ldquo;De vliegende keeper&rdquo;-columns. The list of persons and places alphabetically lists all the persons and places identified in the files using NER, their frequencies and the file in which this person or place appears (note that the list may still contain errors and duplicates). The list with "De vliegende keeper"-columns lists the title of the column and indicates the file on the floppy disks that holds a version of this column, whether a version of this column is can be found as printout or as newspaper clipping in the paper archive (C33941/323, C33941/324, C33941/325) and on which page of the collection of essays <em>De vliegende keeper</em> (1995) this essay appears.</p> <p>The <a href="https://clariahvl.hypotheses.org/tag/unlocking-born-digital-literary-heritage">blog posts of this research scenario</a> on CLARIAH-VL's website provide more information on the creation of the datasets.</p> <p>After approval, the files from the floppy disks (C339941/74) can be accessed at the Letterenhuis for further research.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This video contains two sessions from Open Repositories 2021:</p> <p><strong>Panel: &quot;Broken for All&quot;: the case for persistent identifiers for digital cultural heritage resources</strong><br> <em>Turner, Adrian (1); Holmes-Wong, Deborah (2); Rafique, Zahid (2); Kunze, John (1); Lohnash, Megan (3); McKinley, Matthew (4), Lund,&nbsp;<em>Allison</em>&nbsp;(5)</em><br> <em>1: California Digital Library; 2: University of Southern California Libraries; 3: California Revealed; 4: Omeka; 5: Metropolitan New York Library Council&nbsp;</em><br> Cultural heritage institutions within the United States have made significant investments in building unique digital collections, broadly disseminating them on the web and through networks such as the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). The items within these collections are referenced and cited in a range of sources -- from Wikipedia and scholarly articles, to archival finding aids and classroom lesson plans. However, the application of persistent identifier schemes (e.g. DOI, ARK) for unique digital resources is relatively uncommon within the gallery, library, archive, and museum communities. Relatedly, many repositories and digital asset management systems (DAMS) widely used in these communities simply do not support persistent identifier schemes &quot;out of the box.&quot; Hence, the URLs for the items are extremely fragile. If the collections are migrated to a different repository, the URLs can easily break -- impacting downstream networks, confounding researchers, and compounding the problem of link rot. This panel will discuss the critical role of persistent identifiers in digital collections management and dissemination and some of the challenges in applying them. It will feature case studies demonstrating how commonly-available licensed and open-source repositories can be adapted to support them.</p> <p><strong>Developer Track Session 2:</strong></p> <p><strong>Constructing a Repository Test Strategy Built on Docker Containers</strong><br> <em>Brady, Terrence W</em><br> <em>California Digital Library, United States of America</em><br> The Merritt Digital Preservation system comprises a dozen microservices and supporting services. Our team found that it was not cost effective to maintain and patch a fleet of servers to support a development environment. Our solution was to replace our development server environment with a stack of dockerized services. Once the stack was containerized, we discovered that we were able to create 3 variants of our development stack with different persistence strategies for database content and cloud storage. With these variants, the team has been able to support a variety of testing scenarios.<br> <br> <strong>Deploying a Serverless Application as a Docker Image</strong><br> <em>Brady, Terrence W</em><br> <em>California Digital Library, United States of America</em><br> A serverless application consists of a defined runtime (such as Ruby 2.7 or Python 3) and a package of code. This presentation will illustrate 3 types of code packages of different complexity and will describe the challenges of bundling more complicated dependencies such as binary files. In December 2020, the AWS Lambda serverless architecture began to support Docker images as a deployment package. This packaging approach makes it possible to run tests against a code package before it is deployed. This presentation will demonstrate the test and deployment process for a serverless application within the Merritt digital preservation system. Other repository teams hosting their applications on AWS may discover some useful patterns for testing and deploying serverless code to AWS Lambda.<br> <br> <strong>Live Demo: Create a Developer Workspace Challenge</strong><br> <em>Pottinger, Hardy Joseph</em><br> <em>California Digital Library, University of California, Office of the President, United States of America</em><br> Creating a developer workspace, a place in which you can write and test your code, can seem a daunting task. Sure, someone might have done it before, and they might even share their notes with you, but following those notes and arriving in the same place is like following a treasure map and expecting to get rich. There&rsquo;s a better way, and I&rsquo;m willing to prove it. This demo aims to show the process one goes through to craft a development environment with pretty much any tool, but will use Lando to conserve time. Lando is a way to bootstrap a useable development environment. It&#39;s built on Docker, and is like Docker-Compose, but much more transparent. It handles the boring details and helps you actually start developing with code in your favorite IDE, and all the services you need in Docker. It&#39;s all about making the life of a developer easier. It won&#39;t give you an application container you can deploy, but you will develop a deeper understanding of how all the pieces fit together, and you&#39;ll have a tool which can deploy those pieces to dev/stage/prod if you wish. The audience will participate in this demo.<br> <br> <strong>Building Scalable Serverless Digital Repositories using Amplify Open-source Framework</strong><br> <em>Chen, Yinlin; Jiang, Tingting; Hunter, Lee</em><br> <em>Virginia Tech, United States of America</em><br> We develop digital repositories to disseminate different types of digital content and to promote the principles of open access. Our goal is not to provide access to information to just one individual institution or group but to anyone and everyone. With that ambitious goal in mind, how do we enable our digital repositories to have the high availability and flexible scaling capabilities necessary to face unforeseen demand? How do we utilize only the resources we need without the waste of overprovisioning resources? These are some of the most challenging issues that we face. To achieve our goals, we moved from the traditional monolithic, server-based approach to serverless cloud infrastructure. By leveraging the services that AWS provides we have been able to boost the performance of our repositories 10x compared to that of our previous implementation that was hosted in-house. Our repositories now automatically scale up and down to meet any kind of traffic demands, without our intervention. In this talk, we will demonstrate our scalable serverless digital repositories and show the opportunities to explore and reflect on the ways that repositories enable openness for all.</p>

Collaborative annotation of 3D digital cultural heritage: A new FOSS toolchain

<p>A suite of tools for semantic annotation of 3D cultural artefacts is being developed as part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://nfdi4culture.de/">NFDI4Culture</a>&nbsp;project across several partner organisations (led by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tib.eu/de/forschung-entwicklung/forschungsgruppen-und-labs/open-science">Open Science Lab at TIB, Hannover</a>). Operating within Task area 1: Data capture and enrichment, the proposed toolchain focuses on the annotation of 3D data within an open&nbsp;knowledge graph environment, so that 3D objects&rsquo; metadata&nbsp;and&nbsp;related annotations can be linked to various resources, part of the semantic web and all data is searchable via a public SPARQL endpoint.&nbsp;</p>

LadiesDebating_HTO: A Knowledge Graph for representing the "Edinburgh Ladies' Debating Society Digital Collection" (1865 - 1880) following Heritage Textual Ontology

<p>This Knowlege Graph represents the information of the "Edinburgh Ladies&rsquo; Debating Society<strong>"</strong> (years: 1865 - 1880) collection in RDF (ttl format). This collection consists of the complete runs of two Edinburgh journals, <strong>&lsquo;The Attempt&rsquo; (10 volumes, 1865-74)</strong> and its successor &lsquo;<strong>The Ladies&rsquo; Edinburgh Magazine&rsquo; (6 volumes, 1875-80)</strong>. These publications were produced by a leading Edinburgh women&rsquo;s club, known during the period as the Edinburgh Essay Society or the Ladies&rsquo; Edinburgh Essay Society, but subsequently as the Ladies&rsquo; Edinburgh Debating Society. The Society existed from 1865 to 1935.&nbsp; The raw dataset is provided by the NLS in this <a href="https://data.nls.uk/data/digitised-collections/edinburgh-ladies-debating-society/">link</a>. As&nbsp; other NLS data collections, they are originally provided using two XMLs schemas: METS&nbsp; for descriptive, structural, technical and administrative metadata (Title, Author, Publisher, etc); and ALTO&nbsp; for encoding the OCR text of a page.</p> <p>In this work, we have extracted the information from METS and ALTO XMLS using <a href="https://github.com/francesNLP/defoe">defoe</a> tool. The KG uses the <a href="https://w3id.org/hto">HTO</a> to represent the information extracted. Furthermore, during the information extraction phase, we have employed several techniques to mitigate two common OCR errors: long-S and the line-break hyphenation.</p>

Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset Files of the Milner Hall in UNESCO World Heritage Sterkfontein Caves

<p>These are the asset files attached to the article:&nbsp;Georeferenced and Optimized Digital Asset of the Milner Hall. The&nbsp;article presents a fully visualized and georeferenced digital asset of a chamber in the Sterkfontein Caves, namely, the Milner Hall, in South Africa&rsquo;s Cradle of Humankind (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The creation of which is valuable in virtually connecting the global community to this important paleontological and archeological site. A considerable number of hominin fossils and earlier Stone Age archeological artefacts have been excavated from ancient cave infills at Sterkfontein, including the important Australopithecus specimens, &ldquo;Little Foot&rdquo; and &ldquo;Mrs Ples&rdquo;. This is also the only publicly accessible, paleoanthropological fossil-bearing cave in the Cradle of Humankind. However, the creation of accurate, visually detailed documentation and emplacement within the larger geomorphological context is challenging here. Real-world constraints, such as availability of equipment, resources and skills are often problematic at heritage sites like this. Furthermore, optimizing data for many uses that is so complex in its topology, scale and textures increases the difficulty in creating a digital asset of this nature. Our asset enables a wide range of use cases, especially within heritage, and scientific planning and outreach. It is a single digital model that contains a spectrum of believable visual effects and surveying accurate layers, and ultimately addresses the aforementioned challenges.</p> <p>This video shows the methods used in the production of this asset:&nbsp;https://youtu.be/e3bmxOzzKSY</p>
