Geodetic displacement data near North Brawley Geothermal Field, 2009-2019

Supplementary Dataset for Materna, Barbour, Jiang, and Eneva (2022), "Detection of aseismic slip and poroelastic reservoir deformation at the North Brawley Geothermal Field from 2009–2019". The 2009-2019 downsampled and processed displacements for modeling, shown in their Figure 3, are presented in this repository. Processing methods are included in detail in the paper. Also included are the fault geometries used for modeling and the surface rupture trace of the M4.7 normal faulting earthquake in the 2012 Brawley Swarm, traced from a UAVSAR interferogram.

TerraSAR-X data were ordered from the German Space Agency (DLR), using funding from grant GEO-10-001 awarded to Imageair Inc. by the California Energy Commission (CEC). InSAR/SqueeSAR processing of these data was done by TRE Altamira in Canada and Italy under CEC grant GEO-16-003 to Imageair Inc. Leveling data were obtained from the Imperial County Department of Public Works (https://publicworks.imperialcounty.org) and processed under the same grant. The Copernicus Sentinel-1 data were processed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and retrieved from the Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) (https://search.asf.alaska.edu/). Sentinel-1 displacement time series were derived from interferograms processed in Jiang and Lohman (2021) through the support of Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) award 20139. SCEC is funded by NSF Cooperative Agreement EAR-1600087 & USGS Cooperative Agreement G17AC00047. UAVSAR data can be downloaded at https://uavsar.jpl.nasa.gov/. Quadtree downsampling was performed with the Kite library (Isken et al., 2017).

2D Peridynamic Displacement Fields

These are databases of Peridynamic solutions for two sets of problems:

1) Three constant strain modes (results.db)

2) A thin pressurized crack (lfm_data.db)

The databases contain multiple combinations of force formulations, influence functions, support radii, stabilization parameters, and smoothing parameters. Each combination is solved enough times to determine grid convergence.

Additionally, there is a database of finite element solutions on the thin pressurized crack to serve as comparisons for accuracy and runtime (femdata.db).

The files are SQLite3 databases written using the builtin Python library.

See PeriFlakes: https://github.com/afqueiruga/periflakes

Subpixel offsets of Copernicus Sentinel 2 data, related to the displacement field of the Sulawesi Earthquake (2018, Mw 7.5)

Sulawesi lies within a complex fault system located between the Australian, Pacific, Philippine and Sunda Plates. The main active structure onshore at the western part of Central Sulawesi is the left-lateral NNW-SSE trending Palu-Koro strike-slip fault that forms the boundary between the North Sula and Makassar blocks. On 28 September 2018, a large tsunamigenic earthquake (Mw 7.5) struck the Minahasa Peninsula, Indonesia. The earthquake caused massive damages near Palu city, including onshore gravitational instabilities and a tsunami.

These data are the result of subpixel image correlation on Copernicus Sentinel-2 data (17 September 2018 and 2 October 2018) to derive the two-dimensional (East-West and North-South) horizontal co-seismic displacement field. In these data, the displacement field is expressed in meters. These results show a dominant senextral strike-slip motion on the onshore part of the Palu-Koro fault. Maximum displacement at the surface reached more than 8 meters at the location of Palu city. Processing is performed with COSI-CORR (Leprince et al., 2007). Data value higher than | 10 | meters should be considered as noise and disregarded. I used a correlation window size of 32 pixels with a sampling step of 16 pixels. A ramp has been removed from (separately) the North-South offsets and from the East-West offsets. The files are rasters of floating point values, served with a header file readable by ENVI software.

Sign conventions:

-North-South offsets: positive values to the North.

- East-West offsets: positive values to the West.

http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2018/10/Indonesia_earthquake_displacement_data

Copyright: Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2018), processed at the French Geological Survey (BRGM)

The nodal DIC measurements at different times during the experiments are provided as .txt files we call "nodemaps" and stored in subfolders "Nodemaps". Each nodemap consists of a header containing meta data information like a running number (current stage index) or the applied force, followed by the nodal displacements and strains in tabular form. Additionally, the dataset S160,4.7 contains crack path and crack tip labels for each nodemap in the subfolder "GroundTruth". The ground truth is provided as arrays of size 256x256. Each pixel of the array contains the label "2" for the class "crack tip", "1" for the class "crack path", or "0" for the class "background". These labels were created in a semi-manual fashion and can be used for machine learned crack detection using supervised training.

These datasets were recently used to evaluate neural attention of convolutional neural networks trained on fatigue crack tip detection in Melching et al. (Sci Rep, 2022). Additional guidance on data loading and usage can also be found at https://github.com/dlr-wf/explainable-crack-tip-detection.

The experiments S160,2.0 and S160,4.7 were conducted and analysed by Strohmann et al. (FFEMS, 2021).

The experiment S950,1.6 was conducted and analysed by Breitbarth et al. (FFEMS, 2020).
