Seasonal Distribution of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea and Ammonia-Oxidation Rates in the South Atlantic Bight from April to November 2014

Previous work in nearshore waters of the Georgia USA coast has demonstrated mid-summer peaks in the abundance of Thaumarchaeota (blooms with 100 to 1,000-fold increases) accompanied by spikes in nitrite concentration. These studies were performed at one location, so the areal extent of the bloom is unknown, nor has it been demonstrated conclusively that it develops in inshore waters. We collected data on rates of ammonia oxidation and the distribution of Thaumarchaeota, ammonia-oxidizing Betaproteobacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospina and environmental variables during 6 cruises aboard the UNOLS vessel R/V Savannah from April to November 2014 on transects of the South Atlantic Bight to evaluate the areal extent and timing of the bloom. This data set includes measurements of Chlorophyll-a concentration, PAR attenuation coefficient, oxygen concenrations, temperature, salinity and nitogenous nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrite + nitrate, ammonium, urea), and estimates of Archaea, bacteria and diatom gene concentration based on quantitative PCR.

Mollusc population size distribution monitoring: Fall 2016 mid-marsh and creekbank infaunal and epifaunal mollusc size distributions based on collections from GCE marsh monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2016 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusc species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1707. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

Distribution and habitat use of juvenile steelhead and other fishes of the lower Feather River

Understanding how fish presence is related to habitat features is useful in restoration planning and monitoring as better information about how fish use habitat may lead to more impactful restoration projects. The California Department of Water Resources (DWR), conducted a two-year study of microhabitat and mesohabitat in Feather River. The goal of this study was to identify relationships between habitat conditions (depth, substrate, velocity, and cover) and where juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead occur. Snorkel surveys were conducted monthly March through August in 2001 and 2002 across 29 different sites, which were selected at random (13 in Low Flow Channel, and 16 in High Flow Channel). Each sampling section covered an area 25 meters long by 4 meters wide, running parallel to riverbank. These data were published to support the Healthy Rivers and Landscapes Science Program.

Ant Distribution and Abundance in New England 1990-2014

The Ants of New England project is a multi-investigator, multi-year effort to document the occurrence, distribution, and relative abundance of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the six New England states (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine). The project was initiated in 1999 as a more narrowly-focused effort aimed at determining ant species diversity in bogs and surrounding forests in Massachusetts and Vermont using standard methods (pitfall trapping, timed baiting, litter collection, and visual searching; Gotelli and Ellison 2002, Ellison et al. 2002). Subsequent detailed analysis of collection methods revealed that reliable estimates of ant species occurrences, distribution, and abundance in this geographic region could be obtained using only visual searching and litter collection (Ellison et al. 2007). Following this analysis, we carried out an initial survey of ant occurrences, distribution, and abundances in Massachusetts in 2007. The 2007 survey was focused on ants living in natural community types as defined by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (Swain and Kearsley 2001) and located in properties of high conservation and education value owned by Massachusetts Audubon Society and The Trustees of Reservations. The primary goals for the 2007 survey were: (1) To describe and quantify patterns of distribution and abundance of ants across Massachusetts and to determine the regional "species pool" of ants that could ground local studies on ants (for example, the Warm Ants project at Harvard Forest). (2) To provide a baseline from which to assess long-term effects of climate change on species distributions. (3) To develop a set of indicator species to be used to determine efficacy of ongoing and proposed management strategies and to reveal effects of future disturbances and habitat degradation. Regional and Historical Variation in Garlic Mustard Distribution in Western Massachusetts 2006-2007

The susceptibility of a site to invasion by nonnative species depends on its current ecological features and its historical land use. Certain environments might be more conducive to an invasive plant’s success, and several recent studies have shown that former agricultural sites are more susceptible to invasion than sites that have been continuously wooded. We studied the invasive herb garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), at roadside forested edges. Site selection was stratified by two regions with distinct ecological characteristics (the Connecticut River Valley and the Berkshire Valley in Massachusetts), and two historical land uses (wooded versus cleared in 1830).

Bayesian Analysis of Tree Distributions Across Space and Time in Eastern North America 2010-2011

The distributions of many organisms are spatially autocorrelated, but it is unclear whether including spatial terms in species distribution models (SDMs) improves projections of future species distributions. We provide the first comparative test of a purely spatial SDM, a purely non-spatial SDM, and an SDM that combines spatial and environmental information. Spatial SDMs provided better fits to the calibration data, more accurate predictions of a hold-out validation data set of modern trees, and lower false positive rates at all time periods than non-spatial SDMs. Hindcasted projection of spatial SDMs had higher variance than those of non-spatial SDMs. Overall predictive performance of non-spatial and spatial SDMs varied temporally and as a function of niche overlap. Ecological modelers should include spatial terms in SDMs used for projecting future distributions of species.

Regional Distribution and Abundance of Eastern Hemlock in Eastern North America 2010

We developed comprehensive maps on the distribution and abundance of hemlock for the purposes of mapping the host distribution, and modeling the spread, of the hemlock woolly adelgid. Multiple statistical models were used to map the distribution of hemlock. Hemlock occurrence data were taken from the FIA database and multiple environmental predictors were gathered from various databases as described in methods. Using Phenology to Forecast Species Distributions across the Eastern United States in the 2070s

Studies that use species distribution models (SDMs) to document the relationship between species’ geographic range and environmental conditions rarely consider functional traits, such as phenology, that strongly affect species’ demography and fitness. Using more than 120,000 herbarium specimens representing 360 plant species across the eastern United States, we created a novel “phenology-informed” SDM that integrates dynamic phenological responses to changing climates. Compared to standard SDMs based only on abiotic variables, our phenology-informed SDMs forecast significantly lower species habitat loss, and less species turnover within communities under climate change. These results suggest that phenotypic plasticity and/or local adaptation in phenology may help many species adjust their ecological niches and persist in their habitats during periods of rapid environmental change. By modeling historical data that link phenology, climate and species distributions, our findings reveal how species’ reproductive phenology mediates their geographic distributions along environmental gradients and affect regional biodiversity patterns under future climate changes. More importantly, our newly developed model also circumvents the need for mechanistic models that explicitly link traits to occurrences for each species, and could thus facilitate the deployment of trait-based SDMs across unprecedented spatial and taxonomic scales.

Spatially Distributed Lake Mendota EXO Multi-Parameter Sonde Measurements Summer 2019

This data was collected over 9 sampling trips from June to August 2019. 35 grid boxes were generated over Lake Mendota. Before each sampling effort, sample point locations were randomized within each grid box. Surface measurements were taken with an EXO multi-parameter sonde at the 35 locations throughout Lake Mendota during each sampling trip. Measurements include temperature, conductivity, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, turbidity, dissolved organic material, ODO, pH, and pressure.

<p>This dataset includes the current&nbsp;version of the indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>Ecosystem Functional Groups</strong> - Level 3 of IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (v2.1). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) and Keith et al. (2022).</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes for each functional group of ecosystems to enable any ecosystem type to be assigned to a group.</p> <p>Maps are indicative of global distribution patterns and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Most maps were prepared using a coarse-scale template (e.g. ecoregions), but some were compiled from higher resolution spatial data where available (see details in profiles). Higher resolution mapping is planned in future publications.</p> <p>We emphasise that spatial representation of Ecosystem Functional Groups does not follow higher-order groupings described in respective ecoregion classifications. Consequently, when Ecosystem Functional Groups are aggregated into<strong> functional biomes</strong> (Level 2 of the Global Ecosystem Typology), spatial patterns may differ from those of biogeographic biomes. Differences reflect the distinctions between functional and biogeographic interpretations of the term, &ldquo;biome&rdquo;.</p>

Hydrodynamic Model Output Used to Evaluate Chinook Salmon Movements and Distribution in the South Delta

This data release includes the output variables extracted from the UnTRIM Bay-Delta hydrodynamic model (hydrodynamic model) for use in evaluating the effects of hydrodynamics on the behavior of acoustically-tagged juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Work was funded by State Water Contractors (SWC) and completed by Anchor QEA; FlowWest, LLC; and University of Washington under a SWC 2023 Science Plan grant (study name Evaluation of the Influence of State Water Project and Central Valley Project on Chinook Salmon Movements and Distribution in the South Delta), contracted by SWC. Not all the hydrodynamic model output variables in the output provided with this memorandum were used in the final fish models used to analyze Chinook Salmon responses. Model output for additional variables and locations were included for completeness and to make these output files more broadly useful to researchers interested in other locations or variables in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Hydrodynamic model simulations were conducted for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, with hydrodynamic model output variables provided at mostly the same locations for each period simulated. The years 2011 through 2016 were simulated previously for a prior project and model output provided through the Environmental Data Initiative (edi.1124.1). Files for these years were recreated from the prior simulations for this project to add an output location. Additional locations were added to the 2010 and 2017 simulations for the 2010 and 2017 hydrophone arrays, and thus 2010 and 2017 include additional model output, relative to 2011 through 2016. The model simulation for each year spanned the full period of Chinook Salmon detections in the telemetry data collected during that year.

Native and invasive species abundance distributions in lakes at North Temperate Lakes LTER 1979-2010

These data were compiled from multiple sources. We collated data on the abundance or density of aquatic invasive and native species sampled in more than 20 sites using the same methods. To control for sampling methodology and allow comparisons among native and invasive species, we only included data where both invasive and native species from a taxonomic group were sampled using the same methods across multiple sites. Madison community science field campaign to assess abundance and distribution of invasive jumping worms.

Asian pheretimoid earthworms of the genera Amynthas and Metaphire (jumping worms) are leading a new wave of co-invasion into Northeastern and Midwestern states, with potential consequences for native organisms and ecosystem processes. However, little is known about their distribution, abundance, and habitat preferences in urban landscapes – areas which likely influence range expansion via human-driven spread. We led a participatory field campaign to assess jumping worm distribution and abundance in Madison, Wisconsin in September of 2017. By compressing 250 person-hours of sampling effort into a single day, we quantified presence and abundance of three jumping worm species across different land-cover types (forest, grassland, open space, residential lawns and gardens), finding that urban green spaces differed in invasibility. We show that community science can be powerful for researching invasive species while engaging the public in conservation. This approach was particularly effective here, where broad spatial sampling was required within a short temporal window.
