Lake Sediment Pollen from Duck Pond in South Wellfleet MA from 13856 BP to Present
Aim We analyzed a dataset composed of multiple palaeoclimate and lake-sediment pollen records from New England to explore how postglacial changes in the composition and spatial patterns of vegetation were controlled by regional-scale climate change, a subregional environmental gradient, and landscape-scale variations in soil characteristics. Location The 120,000-km2 study area includes parts of Vermont and New Hampshire in the north, where sites are 150-200 km from the Atlantic Ocean, and spans the coastline from southeastern New York to Cape Cod and the adjacent islands, including Block Island, the Elizabeth Islands, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard. Results Boreal forest featuring Picea and Pinus banksiana was present across the region when conditions were cool and dry 14,000-12,000 calibrated 14C yrs before present (ybp). Pinus strobus became regionally dominant as temperatures increased between 12,000 and 10,000 ybp. The composition of forests in inland and coastal areas diverged in response to further warming after 10,000 ybp, when Quercus and Pinus rigida expanded across southern New England, while conditions remained cool enough in inland areas to maintain Pinus strobus. Increasing precipitation allowed Tsuga canadensis, Fagus grandifolia, and Betula to replace Pinus strobus in inland areas during 9000-8000 ybp, and also led to the expansion of Carya across the coastal part of the region beginning at 7000-6000 ybp. Abrupt cooling at 5500-5000 ybp caused sharp declines in Tsuga in inland areas and Quercus at some coastal sites, and the populations of those taxa remained low until they recovered around 3000 ybp in response to rising precipitation. Throughout most of the Holocene, sites underlain by sandy glacial deposits were occupied by Pinus rigida and Quercus. <p>This data record contains 5 zip files all used to build and use a semantic segmentation model to operate on beach imagery taken at the Field Research Facility (FRF) in Duck, North Carolina, USA. All data is from 2015-2021</p> <p>The `training_data.zip` contains all data used to train the ML model. All images come from the north facing (c1) camera. This zip file includes: a list of classes used to label the imagery, and folders of 107 images, 107 sparse annotations (doodles), 107 labels, and 107 overlays. All labeling was done with the open-source labeling tool ‘Doodler (Buscombe et al., 2021).</p> <p>The `model.zip` file contains the ML model, and associated metadata. This includes: a JSON model configuration file, a figure showing model training statistics, an `.npz` file of model training output, a list of training and validation files, the model as an h5 file and in the Tensorflow ‘saved model’ format. All modeling was done with Segmentation Gym (Buscombe & Goldstein 2022).</p> <p>The `test_data_c6.zip` file contains all data from the south facing (c6) camera to test the ML model. Data from: Feather corticosterone is lower in translocated and historical populations of the endangered Laysan duck (Anas laysanensis)
<p>Identifying reliable bioindicators of population status is a central goal of conservation physiology. Physiological stress measures are often used as metrics of individual health and can assist in managing endangered species if linked to fitness traits. We analysed feather corticosterone, a cumulative physiological stress metric, of individuals from historical, translocated, and source populations of an endangered endemic Hawaiian bird, the Laysan duck (<em>Anas laysanensis</em>). We hypothesised that feather corticosterone would reflect the improved reproduction and survival rates observed in populations translocated to Midway and Kure Atolls from Laysan Island. We also predicted less physiological stress in historical Laysan birds collected before ecological conditions deteriorated and the population bottleneck. All hypotheses were supported: we found lower feather corticosterone in the translocated populations and historical samples than in those from recent Laysan samples. This suggests that current Laysan birds are experiencing greater physiological stress than historical Laysan and recently translocated birds. Our initial analysis suggests that feather corticosterone may be an indicator of population status and could be used as a non-invasive physiological monitoring tool for this species with further validation. Furthermore, these preliminary results, combined with published demographic data, suggest that current Laysan conditions may not be optimal for this species.</p>
Avian botulism is a primary, year-round threat to adult survival in the endangered Hawaiian Duck (Anas wyvilliana) on Kaua'i, Hawai'i, USA
<p>Adult survival is the most important demographic parameter influencing population dynamics for many bird taxa. Thus, understanding how survival probabilities and causes of mortality vary throughout the annual cycle is critical for developing informed and effective management strategies. In this study, we used radio-telemetry data to evaluate the effects of biotic (e.g., sex, peak [September–April] vs. off-peak [May–August] nesting seasons) and abiotic factors (e.g., rainfall, year, bi-monthly interval) on adult survival, estimate annual survival probabilities, and identify primary sources of mortality for Hawaiian Ducks (<em>Anas wyvilliana</em>), an endangered, non-migratory dabbling duck, on the island of Kaua'i, Hawai'i, USA over 2013 and 2014. Additionally, we used contemporaneous Hawaiian Duck carcass recovery and surveillance data to examine temporal and climatic associations with avian botulism outbreaks. Our results suggested bi-monthly survival decreased with total rainfall during the preceding two-month interval. Survival did not vary with sex, between peak and off-peak nesting seasons, or between the two years of this study. Annual survival probabilities (62–80%) were relatively low compared to the closely related Laysan Duck (<em>Anas laysanensis</em>) on Laysan Island. Primary causes of mortality included avian botulism and presumed predation by cats (<em>Felis catus</em>). The botulism surveillance dataset revealed support for the effect of rainfall on the number of sick and dead birds recovered (<em>n</em> = 216), with generally a greater number of recoveries during months with middle-range total rainfall during the concurrent and preceding months. Our study provides critical baseline demographic data for population monitoring and highlights the importance of managing botulism risk and non-native mammalian predators for the recovery of the endangered Hawaiian Duck.</p>

Eddy Duck Data: Measured Three-Dimensional Structure of Surfzone Velocities
<p>This archive contains data from the 2011 EddyDuck experiment. Three-dimensional structure of surfzone velocity fields was measured using 12 horizontally-spaced Nortek Aquadopp current meters, each instrument measuring vertical profiles of water velocity. Wood duck nest survival and duckling recruitment is minimally affected by interspecific brood parasitism from hooded mergansers and black-bellied whistling-ducks
<p>In the southeastern United States, wood ducks (<em>Aix sponsa</em>) have historically experienced interspecific brood parasitism (IBP) primarily from hooded mergansers (<em>Lophodytes cucullatus</em>), but the recent northward expansion of black-bellied whistling-ducks (<em>Dendrocygna autumnalis</em>) has added a new complexity to these interactions. We monitored nest boxes in Louisiana to evaluate the influence IBP had on wood duck daily nest survival rate (after, DSR) and duckling recruitment. We monitored 1,295 wood duck nests from 2020−2023 and found 112 (8.7%) were parasitized by hooded mergansers and 148 (11.5%) by whistling-ducks. Parasitic egg-laying by hooded mergansers lowered wood duck DSR, while DSR for nests parasitized by whistling-ducks was comparable to clutches containing only wood duck eggs. We considered the wood duck capture histories of 2,465 marked female ducklings and 540 banded adult females to estimate a duckling recruitment probability for the entire study period. We recaptured 50 ducklings as adults; 6 (12.0%) hatched from clutches parasitized by hooded mergansers, 1 (2.0%) from a clutch parasitized by a whistling-duck, and 43 (86.0%) from clutches containing only wood duck eggs. The duckling recruitment probability was 0.039 (95% credible interval = 0.028, 0.051). Nest initiation date had a negative effect on recruitment, wherein most recruits hatched from nests initiated earlier in the season. Given only ~9% of wood duck nests contained hooded merganser eggs, we conclude IBP writ large had no detrimental effect on DSR at a population level. The lower DSR of clutches parasitized by hooded mergansers is potentially linked to a high abundance of early-season parasites that produce "dump nests" and these clutches are often abandoned without being incubated. Despite ongoing parasitism by hooded mergansers and the range expansion of whistling-ducks, wood duck productivity in Louisiana appears to be minimally affected by interspecific brood parasitism.</p>
