Share and spatial concentration of social housing in Dutch urban areas
<p>This dataset contains the amount of social housing units of the Netherlands per urban area, as well as the intensity of their spatial autocorrelation and its proportion compared to the total housing stock, for the year 2023. <a href="https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/dossier/nederland-regionaal/geografische-data/kaart-van-100-meter-bij-100-meter-met-statistieken">Original data</a> comes from Statistics Netherlands (<em>Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek</em>) released for 100 m x 100 m grid cells covering a large share of the Dutch territory. Grid cells with missing values were excluded from the analysis. The spatial autocorrelation of social housing was calculated with urban area-level and U-style computations of Global Moran's I based on the share of social housing units compared to the total housing stock of every grid cell. Limits and definition of urban areas are extracted from <a href="https://www.oecd.org/en/data/datasets/oecd-definition-of-cities-and-functional-urban-areas.html">the OECD</a>. Data show considerable variation in the levels of social housing and its spatial concentration among Dutch urban areas.</p>

LEDs can replace sunlight or costly greenhouse lamps to grow crops in cold climates or during off-season periods. Growing food locally reduces the need for long-distance transport and lessens the environmental impact used to produce the food. All thanks to Photonics!</p> <p> </p>

Recent developments in photolithography where light is used to control where conductive metal is placed on the chips - have enabled us to put more transistors than there are people on earth! Transistors are responsible for controlling the path of electricity/information through a chip. These technological developments have led to improving the speed, size and energy consumption of our chips, making them smaller and more efficient.</p> <p> </p>

<p>The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).<br> <br> Why do soap bubbles have colour?<br> <br> Light reflects off both the inner and outer surfaces of a soap bubble. As the bubble dries out it changes thickness and the light waves reflecting off both surfaces have to travel different distances. White light is made up of all different colours – or waves of different lengths and - when light waves meet – or overlap - they create different colours. Because reflected light travels different distances due to the different film thicknesses we see iridescence in soap bubbles. This phenomenon is used in photonics to provide anti-reflection coating on your glasses for example.</p> <p> </p>

Light is used by forensic detectives to help locate evidence such as latent fingerprints, bodily fluids, hair and fibres, bruises, wound patterns, shoe and foot imprints, gunshot residues or drug traces. All of these clues fluoresce - or glow brightly - under selectively coloured light. Photography is also vital to help collect and store this evidence. </p> <p>All thanks to Photonics! </p>

<p>The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).<br> <br> How can light replace a needle?</p> <p>We no longer need to use a needle to monitor the level of oxygen in your blood! We can use light emitting diodes (LEDs) attached to the top of your finger - and a light detector underneath to measure the amount of light passing through your finger. As Hemoglobin - the proteins in red blood cells which carry oxygen - absorbs light we can determine whether you have enough oxygen in your blood. More advanced devices can also monitor your heart-rate and blood pressure. We'll even be using light to measure your blood-sugar level in the future. All thanks to Photonics!</p> <p> </p>

GeoERA RESOURCE H3O-PLUS data set which contains hydraulic properties of prime aquifers and aquitards in the Dutch-Flemish-German cross-border area
<p>Dataset which contains information about hydraulic properties of harmonized hydrogeological units in the Dutch-Flemish-German cross-border region which was compiled in the GeoERA RESOURCE project under WP3 H3O-PLUS. The harmonization of the 3D geometry of the cross-border hydrogeological units in the H3O projects constituted a major step towards a common hydrogeological dataset of the Roer Valley Graben and thus the harmonization of groundwater flow models. The database that was compiled provides the characterization of these hydrogeological units with respect to their hydraulic properties, primarily their hydraulic conductivity.<br> The associated report and appendices describe the database of hydraulic properties of aquifers and aquitards based on common criteria. Attention is also given to the characterization of hydraulic properties of faults.</p>

Open Access levels of Dutch universities' output 2016-2017 (articles & reviews): green, gold, hybrid and bronze - May 2018
<p>Using Web of Science and Unpaywall data, we here provide an update of Open Access (OA) levels of Dutch universities, for 2016 and 2017.</p> <p>Our previous analysis (<a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1133759">10.5281/zenodo.1133759</a> and <a href="http://doi.org/10.7287/peerj.preprints.3520v1">10.7287/peerj.preprints.3520v1</a>) looked at OA classification as included in Web of Science (gold and green OA, based on Unpaywall data), and supplemented that with a breakdown of gold OA into pure gold, hybrid and bronze, taken from Unpaywall data (formerly OADOI) directly. Here, we improve on this by running all DOIs retrieved from WoS through Unpaywall data (using their web interface that allows batch checking of up to 10,000 DOIs at a time). Unlike WoS, Unpaywall data itself includes author-submitted versions in their green OA classification, resulting in more complete green OA levels. </p> <p>In addition, since our initial analysis of December 2017, Unpaywall data has considerably expanded its coverage of institutional repositories (IRs) (see <a href="https://unpaywall.org/sources">https://unpaywall.org/sources</a>). This now includes coverage of the IRs from all Dutch universities. </p> <p>Taken together, the current data show higher levels of green open access, including author-submitted versions, compared to our previous analysis. </p> <p>In this update, we include output (articles and reviews) from 2016 and 2017 for all 14 universities in the Netherlands. </p> <p>The following categories are distinguished (description taken from Piwowar at al., 2018, doi: <a href="https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj.4375">10.7717/peerj.4375</a>)</p> <ul> <li><strong>Pure gold</strong>: Published in an open-access journal (as defined by the DOAJ)</li> <li><strong>Hybrid</strong>: Free under an open license in a toll-access journal</li> <li><strong>Bronze</strong>: Free to read on the publisher page, but without a license</li> <li><strong>Green: </strong>Available from an institutional or disciplinary repository (including PubMedCentral)</li> </ul> <p>Data for Dutch universities were collected from Web of Science using the organization-enhanced field. Only articles and reviews were included. DOIs were extracted from the Web of Science export, run through the Unpaywall data <a href="https://unpaywall.org/products/simple-query-tool">Simple Query Tool</a>. From the resulting data from Unpaywall, OA classification was done using a simple formula in Excel (to be replaced by an R script in a future update). The Excel template used is included in this dataset, as is the OADOI API output for each Dutch university's article subset, and the lists of DOIs derived from Web of Science. The dataset also includes summarized data and three charts generated from these data, showing levels of different types of OA for 2016, 2017 and the two years compared. </p> <p>----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p>
Dataset: Publication cultures and Dutch research output: a quantitative assessment
<p>Dataset belonging to the report: <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2643360">Publication cultures and Dutch research output: a quantitative assessment</a></p> <p> </p> <p>On the report:</p> <p>Research into publication cultures commissioned by VSNU and carried out by Utrecht University Library has detailed university output beyond just journal articles, as well as the possibilities to assess open access levels of these other output types. For all four main fields reported on, the use of publication types other than journal articles is indeed substantial. For Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities in particular (with over 40% and over 60% of output respectively not being regular journal articles) looking at journal articles only ignores a significant share of their contribution to research and society. This is not only about books and book chapters, either: book reviews, conference papers, reports, case notes (in law) and all kinds of web publications are also significant parts of university output.</p> <p>Analyzing all these publication forms and especially determining to what extent they are open access is currently not easy. Even combining some the largest citation databases (Web of Science, Scopus and Dimensions) leaves out a lot of non-article content and in some fields even journal articles are only partly covered. Lacking metadata like affiliations and DOIs (either in the original documents or in the scholarly search engines) makes it even harder to analyze open access levels by institution and field. Using repository-harvesting databases like BASE and NARCIS in addition to the main citation databases improves understanding of open access of non-article output, but these routes also have limitations. The report has recommendations for stakeholders, mostly to improve metadata and coverage and apply persistent identifiers.</p>
