Early Irish Analogy Dataset for Word Embedding Evaluation

An embedding evaluation dataset for Early Irish described in the paper "Do not Trust the Experts: How the Lack of Standard Complicates NLP for Historical Irish".

Traditionally, analogy datasets are based on pairwise semantic proportion, and therefore every question has a single correct answer. Given the high level of variation in historical languages, such a strict definition of a correct answer seems unjustified. Therefore, Early Irish Analogy Dataset follows the Bigger Analogy Test Set (BATS) and provides several correct answers to each analogy question.

Morphological and spelling variation data are extracted from the eDIL, a historical dictionary of medieval Irish. Unlike BATS, no distinction is made between inflection types due to eDIL's structure. The raw data amounted to 2,370 spelling variation and 9,690 morphological variation questions, from which 150 examples were randomly selected for each of the subsets to be comparable in size with the synonym and antonym subsets. The synonym and antonym subsets are translations of the correspondent BATS parts obtained by reverse-searching the eDIL and proofread by four expert evaluators. The dataset includes 98 entries in the synonym subset and 109 entries in the antonym subset, upon which three or more experts agreed.

Irish Potato Imagery Dataset for Early Detection of Crop Diseases

The annotated dataset consists of irish potatoes leaf imagery for early diseases detection. The irish potato crop leaves images were taken in Mbeya region in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania between 22nd November 2022 and 08th April 2023 using a mobile data collection tool, called the Open Data Kit (ODK). The crop leaf imagery dataset use case is developing machine learning models and end-user tools for early detection of (i) Early blight, and (ii) Late blight diseases in irish potatoes. The common leaf imagery data was collected from small holder farms using Samsung Galaxy A03 Core smartphones.

All images are in the .zip files; “lateblt.zip” has 20,499 images, “healthy.zip” has 20,438 images, and “earlyblt.zip” has 17,772 images. A total of 58,709 image files are labelled.

This research project is financially supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through the Artificial Intelligence for Agriculture and Food Systems Innovation Research Network (AI4AFS-IRN) administered by the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) with Grant Award Number: AI4AFS/GA/AFS-2504001568.

Early Irish Glossaries Database: XML archive

The early Irish glossaries Sanas Cormaic (Cormac’s Glossary), O’Mulconry’s Glossary (De origine scoticae linguae), Dúil Dromma Cetta (the Collection of Druim Cett) and the shorter texts Loman and Irsan are important resources for our understanding of the literary and cultural environment of medieval Ireland. These inter-related texts, compiled from the seventh or eighth century onwards, comprise several thousand headwords followed by commentary that ranges from single-word explanations to extended narratives running to several pages.

This collection comprises XML files for each version of each text, derived from the Early Irish Glossaries Database: https://www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/irishglossaries
