Models simulating abrupt changes in the Chilika lagoon fishery, the Easter Island community, forest dieback and lake water quality

<p>This deposit is in support of Willcock et al &quot;Earlier collapse of Anthropocene ecosystems driven by multiple faster and noisier drivers&quot;. It&nbsp;covers the following items: (i) A list of the files contained within this data deposit; (ii) How to access and download the specialist software required to view and simulate the system dynamics models (STELLA &lsquo;isee Player&rsquo;); (iii) How to run isee Player to simulate the models; (iv) How to access and download the standard statistical software &lsquo;R&rsquo; to run the R scripts; (v) How to load &lsquo;R&rsquo; and modify the standard R script to analyse a subset of the model runs. Data from: Island-wide characterization of agricultural production challenges the demographic collapse hypothesis for Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

<p>Communities in resource-poor areas face health, food production, sustainability, and overall survival challenges. Consequently, they are commonly featured in global debates surrounding societal collapse. Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is often used as an example of how over-exploitation of limited resources resulted in a catastrophic population collapse. A vital component of this narrative is that the rapid rise and fall of pre-contact Rapanui population growth rates was driven by the construction and overexploitation of once extensive rock gardens. However, the extent of island-wide rock gardening, while key for understanding food systems and demography, must be better understood. Here, we use shortwave infrared (SWIR) satellite imagery and machine learning to generate an islandwide estimate of rock gardening and re-evaluate prior population size models for Rapa Nui. We show that the extent of this agricultural infrastructure is substantially less than previously claimed and likely could not have supported the large population sizes that have been assumed.</p>

Broken Moai from Easter Island

Many Moai on Easter Island can be found broken on the ground as a result from trying to move them into place. This was another 7m Moai found lying on its back with the head severed. Hopefully this model can capture the detail in the volcanic rock that the Rapa Nui had to carve using only stone hand tools! Total Particulate Carbon and Nitrogen Concentration from R/V Melville MV1015 in the S. Pacific from Arica, Chile to Easter Island, 2010 (C-MORE project)

<p>&quot;The South East Pacific (SEP) is characterized by very high nutrient concentrations in the waters adjacent to the Chilean coast, but very low nutrient concentrations (oligotrophic) in the mid- South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG), near Easter Island. The steep gradient in nutrient concentrations across the region affects the level of marine production, the composition of the microbial community, and the operation of major biogeochemical cycles in ways that are not fully understood. Despite the remarkable diversity of trophic conditions, strong gradients and even some unique singularities, the SEP is still the most sparsely sampled oceanic region of the global ocean from hydrodynamic, biological and biogeochemical points of view. The SPSG is also the most oligotrophic of all sub-tropical gyres. Previous expeditions and remote sensing studies have described the nutrient and chlorophyll field, but there have been few simultaneous measurements of chemical properties with microbial community structure and function. This expedition is designed to investigate the impact of elemental nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, silicon, carbon) ratios on marine productivity and microbial community composition. Samples for PC (particulate carbon) and PN (particulate nitrogen) were collected on a combusted 25mm glass fiber filter (GF/F) and stored in a -80 freezer until analysis. Samples were further analyzed using a Carlo Erba NA 1500 Elemental Analyzer.&quot; Time is in GMT.
