Tree Ring Data from Goose Egg State Forest NY 1681-2014

Is it possible to reconstruct aboveground carbon/biomass from tree rings? If so, how far back in time can researchers go when using tree-ring data in the reconstruction of past biomass? Answers to these questions will have a significant impact on our understanding of dynamics in the terrestrial carbon sink. Long tree-ring records of biomass can reveal intra-annual to annual to multidecadal variations that cannot be resolved by forest census data that is not conducted at annual time steps. Additionally, while these dynamics might be resolved using remote sensing, most remotely-sensed products are only two decades or less in length. By having long records of carbon biomass, we can then identify not only the dominant drivers of biomass, but how the importance of these drivers might change during different eras as environmental factors change (e.g., climate, air pollution, disturbance). To test these and other questions, we collected tree-ring records from three 30m radius plots set in Goose Egg State Forest in New York State. We chose this location because it has old oak dominated forests that can be compared to the long-term forests being studied for carbon dynamics at the Harvard Forest. We can convert these data to biomass using allometric equations and compare tree-ring inferred aboveground biomass to the census data going back in time to understand forest recovery and carbon dynamics in a heavily disturbance forest. City of Seattle, Seattle Public Utilities, Amphibian Egg Mass Counts 2002 - Current, Cedar River Municipal Watershed, King County, WA

This data package contains survey data beginning in 2002 for amphibian egg masses in five small kettle lakes (known as "14 Lakes") in the Cedar River Municipal Watershed, located in King County, Washington, USA. These surveys are conducted annually and are intended to be continued. The lakes range in size from 0.8 to 4.3 acres, have no perennial inlet or outlet, and were formed through glacial outwash deposits. The lakes are located at an elevation of 800 feet and are well suited for pond breeding amphibians because the lakes have no fish. Surveys were conducted annually, typically during the last week of March or first week of April, to coincide with amphibian breeding seasons. Surveyors walked, waded, or paddled the perimeter of each of the lakes during a survey, and tallied the number and type of egg masses that were encountered. Red legged frogs (Rana aurora) were of specific interest for the surveys, though egg masses of other species were noted during some survey years. The lakes represent the largest known breeding concentration of red legged frogs in the municipal watershed. The water depth of the lakes fluctuates year-to-year, which affected the feasibility of surveys. Lower water levels correspond to easier survey conditions: steep slopes and thick vegetation make surveying challenging when the water is high. Surveys were periodically cancelled during years where high water made surveying difficult or during staffing shortages. Counts of red legged frog egg masses across all lakes ranged between 24 and 1778 in a given year.

Three-channel surface electrogastrogram (EGG) dataset recorded during fasting and post-prandial states in 20 healthy individuals

<p>This repository contains Electrogastrography signals termed Electrogastrograms (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrogastrogram">EGG</a>) recorded with surface Ag/AgCl electrodes placed over stomach and pre-processed in 20 healthy individuals (8 Females and 12 Males). The method for EGG recording and pre-processing together with subjects&#39; data can be found in <a href="http://doi.org/10.1515/bmt-2017-0218">Popović et al. 2019</a>.</p> <p>For each subject, EGG was recorded from three locations before (fasting state) and after (postprandial state) a commercial oat meal (274 kcal). Two 20 minutes recordings (files) are obtained for each subject - fasting and postprandial.</p> <p>Naming convention for files: <strong>subjects ID _ type of recording (fasting / postprandial)</strong>.</p> <p>Sample rate was set at 2 Hz and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog-to-digital_converter">A/D card</a> had 16 bits resolution. Gain of the amplifier was set at 1000. Overall, file size is 7200 samples (2400 samples for each channel). All signals were filtered with 3<sup>rd</sup> order band-pass <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterworth_filter">Butterworth filter</a> with cut-off frequencies of 0.03 Hz and 0.25 Hz. Sample dataset: ovitrap sticks pictures and observed egg count

<p>This dataset consists of 300 ovitrap sticks pictures that contain at least one <em>Aedes aegypty</em> egg. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 7 mobile phone and were used to assess the performance of a mosquito egg counter algorithm and application (<a href="https://ovitrap-monitor.netlify.app/">https://ovitrap-monitor.netlify.app/</a>). The ovitraps are part of a weekly surveillance program carried out in the city of C&oacute;rdoba (Argentina) by the Health Ministry authorities. This dataset is a smaple obtained between December 2021 and March 2022. We also include a text file with the code of the ovitraps and the number of eggs counted by a technician under magnifying glasses (i.e., observed counts).</p>

USFWS White Sturgeon Egg Monitoring, San Joaquin River, 2011-2018

Overview The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) funds habitat improvement work and associated monitoring in the Central Valley of California to increase salmonid populations in furtherance of meeting CVPIA fish doubling goals. This data package contains two datasets for White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) monitoring in the San Joaquin River (SJR) conducted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Lodi Fish and Wildlife Office. The objective of this sampling to was determine if White Sturgeon were spawning in the San Joaquin River and to explore where and when spawning occurred, within areas where adult White Sturgeon were known to congregate during the suspected spawning season. SJR_Egg_WST_Set Data This dataset contains data on egg mat sets used to document White Sturgeon spawning in the San Joaquin River. Sets were made at non-random locations from February to May in 2011-2018. In 2017, additional “blitz” sets were used in areas where eggs were detected. Details about set location, timing, and environmental conditions are included, along with the total number eggs of White Sturgeon and other non-sturgeon eggs. SJR_Egg_WST_Catch Data This dataset contains data specific to eggs found in egg mat nets in the San Joaquin River. Across all years, the diameter of eggs (or groups of eggs) were recorded. In 2011 and 2012, efforts were made to describe the developmental stage of White Sturgeon eggs and estimates of spawning timing were sometimes calculated.

Long term egg thiamine monitoring in salmonid populations in California; 2020-2023

Monitoring of egg thiamine levels was initiated in California salmon and steelhead hatcheries in 2020 after thiamine deficiency complex (an insufficiency of vitamin B1) was first documented in this system resulting in widespread mortality of juvenile salmonids. Unfertilized eggs (~10g) from mature adult females were collected from populations of Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ), steelhead ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), and coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ) across California to assess thiamine concentrations. Concurrent fork length, weight, as well as coded wire tag recovery information for Central Valley samples was recorded alongside egg thiamine concentration levels. Additionally, laboratory investigations have been undertaken to uncover the relationship between Chinook salmon egg thiamine concentration and the survival of offspring. From these findings we have understood the potential population-level impacts of thiamine-dependent Chinook salmon fry mortalities based on egg surveillance data. The annual monitoring of eggs from salmonid species in both Central Valley and coastal populations serves as a critical component in comprehending the prevalence, magnitude, and trends of this deficiency among California salmonids. This dataset is focused on supporting research and providing annual data to inform the public and resource managers responding to this emerging threat. Given the value of this information to managing salmonid resources and treatments, we expect this monitoring to continue into the future as funding allows.

Butterfly heavy metal content, wing size, egg count, and brain mass in the Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) Metropolitan Area

We collected 26 common species of butterflies across a gradient of lead pollution in the Twin Cities metropolitan area (Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, USA). We measured their thorax lead concentrations and their body condition including wing area, number of eggs, and brain mass. We also quantified lead in the soil, host plant leaves, and air (through lichen bio-monitors) at sites where the butterflies were collected.

Data from: Competition among eggs shifts to cooperation along a sperm supply gradient in an external fertilizer

Purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, are broadcast spawners. Empirical and theoretical exploration of this trade-off in broadcast spawners has focused heavily on the role of sperm availability. In contrast, the particular manner in which egg concentrations alter both fertilization and polyspermy remains less explored. These data are from a laboratory experiment with a factorial design (six sperm concentrations x four egg concentrations replicated across multiple male-female pairs), to measure fertilization and polyspermy of purple sea urchins. Data were used to evaluate the impact of egg concentration on fertilization, and to explicitly test for random versus nonlinear sperm-egg collision rates. A new dynamic model was developed that expands upon existing models. Observations of fertilization and polyspermy were also used to parameterize and compare the performance of existing models that included random or or nonlinear collision parameters by utilizing several different basic model forms. Salmonella enterica serovar Derby isolated from eggs show genomic and phenotypic traits that may be linked to inability to produce human infection.

<p><em><span>Salmonella enterica</span></em><span> serovar Derby causes foodborne disease (FBD) outbreaks worldwide, mainly from contaminated pork but also from chickens. During a major epidemic of FBD in Uruguay due to <em>S</em>. Enteritidis from poultry, we conducted a large survey of commercially available eggs, where we isolated many <em>S.</em> Enteritidis strains but surprisingly also a much larger number (ratio 5:1) of <em>S</em>. Derby strains. No single case of <em>S</em>. Derby infection was detected in that period, suggesting that the <em>S</em>. Derby egg strains were impaired for human infection. We sequenced fourteen of these egg isolates, as well as fifteen isolates from pork or human infection that were isolated in Uruguay before and after that period, and all sequenced strains had the same sequence type <span>(ST40). Phylogenomic genomic analysis was conducted using more than 3500 genomes from the same sequence type (ST), revealing that Uruguayan isolates clustered into four distantly related lineages. Population structure analysis (BAPS) suggested the division of the analyzed genomes into nine different BAPS1 groups, with Uruguayan strains clustering within four of them. </span>All egg isolates clustered together as a monophyletic group and showed marked differences in gene content with the strains in the other clusters. <span>Differences included the absence of a C-terminal fragment of the <em>speF</em> gene, as well as variations in the composition of mobile genetic elements, such as plasmids, insertion sequences, transposons, and phages, between egg isolates and human/pork isolates.</span></span> <span>Egg isolates showed an acid susceptibility phenotype, reduced ability to reach the intestine after oral inoculation of mice, and reduced induction of SPI-2 <em>ssaG</em> gene, compared to human isolates from other monophyletic groups. Mice challenge experiments showed that mice infected intraperitoneally with human/pork isolates died between 1-7 days p.i., while all animals infected with the egg strain survived the challenge. Altogether, our results suggest that loss of gene functions and the absence of plasmids in egg isolates may explain why these <em>S</em>. Derby were not capable of producing human infection despite being at that time, the main serovar recovered from eggs countrywide.</span></p>

Nitrite content in powders from plasma-activated egg whites

<p>These are source data collected to determine the effects of three quantitative independent variables&mdash;plasma treatment time, the distance of the plasma source from the surface of egg whites, and drying temperature&mdash;on the nitrite concentration (mg&middot;kg⁻&sup1;) in powdered plasma-treated egg whites sourced from both hens and ostriches. The experimental ranges for these variables were as follows: plasma treatment time (20-180 minutes), plasma source distance (10-30 cm), and drying temperature (40-50 &deg;C).</p> <p>The analysis of nitrite content in all samples was conducted according to the method of Lee et al. (2018) with some modifications.</p> <p>A design comprising 20 experimental runs was generated using Design Expert (version 11) software (Stat-Ease, Inc., USA).</p>

In this study, epigenetic and transcriptomic changes in the lungs of broiler chickens of different ages during rearing that were either exposed to elevated egg shell temperature (HIGH) of 38.9&deg;C during mid-incubation or normal egg shell temperature (control; CON). The objective was to better understand how environmental challenges, such as heat stress during egg incubation, affect the development of the immune system and health of broiler chicken at later age. To this end we generated both epigenetic and transcriptomic data of lung tissue of elevated HIGH and CON chicken, furthermore these chicken were challenged by introducing either an infectious E. coli or an IBV vaccination to monitor the respiratory response. Thousands of differential methylated sites were observed at days 15 and 33, when comparing HIGH vs. CON. Pathway enrichment analysis of HIGH vs. CON showed that differentially expressed genes were mainly involved in cilium, cytoskeleton, and immune processes. These findings provide insight into the underlying biological mechanisms of early life conditions, like elevated EST, and their potential role in health of broilers.</p>
