Pico Island has an amazing vineyard culture, especially in its western coastline. The exceptional landscape character granted to Pico a World Heritage status in 2004. The hardness of the volcanic stone, the resources shortage and the archipelago unstable weather, relies on a communal perseverance to achieve tangible outcomes. The resulting landscape configures "an outstanding example of the adaptation of farming practices to a remote and challenging environment", articulating the desolate nature of the lava coast with a man-made system created throughout five centuries of hard labour in very difficult climatic and environment conditions. Nant Yr Eira Bronze Age Copper Mine, Powys
Nant Yr Eira is a remote lead and copper mine high on the slopes of Plynlimon in west Montgomeryshire. The earliest working here is the deep open-cut (95 metres long by 6 metres wide and 7 metres deep) on the upper section of the stream which mined a vein of copper ore. Trench excavations across the old spoil tips lining the open-cut revealed broken hammer stones, charcoal and antler pick fragments indicating mining in the Bronze Age between 2000 and 1500 BC. Lower down the hillside can be seen the remains of the Snowbrook Lead Mine (1858 - 87) with a single ore bin and sorting platform and a stone tramway embankment leading to the head of the prominent wheel pit of the crusher house. Below the crusher house there is a formerly roofed over platform and down by the stream there are buddle and jigger processing tips with remains of the jigger platforms and circular buddles. S. w. weddelli Deville, 1849 — W Brazil (between the rios Purus and Madeira in the states of Amazonas, Acre, and NW Rondonia, as far N as the Rio Pixuna) to SE Peru (from the Rio Abujao, E tributary of the Rio Ucayali, to the S along both banks of the Rio Ucayali, E of the Andes, E of the Rio Apurimac, and along the upper reaches of the Apurimac, Inambari, Urubamba, and Tambopata), and to N Bolivia (rios Madeira and Beni or Mamoré); it crosses the upper Rio Madeira to its right bank in Rondonia in the region of the Rio Jamari, S of the Rio Ji-parana, being sympatric there with Rondon's Marmoset (Mico rondonz). S. w. crandalli Hershkovitz, 1966 — provenance unknown but possibly near the headwaters of the rios Jurua and Tarauaca in W Brazil. S. w. melanoleucus Miranda Ribeiro, 1912 — Brazilian Amazon, along the right bank of the upper Rio Jurua, S from the mouth of the Rio Eira, up to its headwaters, E to the left bank of the Rio Tarauaca (no saddle-back tamarins have been recorded to the E of the Rio Tarauaca in Acre State as far as the upper Rio Purus), in SE Peru from the upper reaches of the Rio Breu and the Quebrada Breu, right bank affluents of the upper Rio Yurua. in Callitrichiade
