MUSCLE: MUlti Session Classification Longterm Electromyography
<p>The <strong><em>MUSCLE</em></strong> dataset, acronym for <em><strong>MU</strong>lti <strong>S</strong>ession <strong>C</strong>lassification <strong>L</strong>ongterm <strong>E</strong>lectromyography</em>, represents a significant resource for evaluating the robustness of upper limb prosthesis control. It features 10 recordings of High-Density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) data gathered over an extensive timeframe. Utilizing a novel HD-sEMG setup, the dataset comprises 64 EMG signals during 10 repetitions of 10 distinct gestures, mirroring the functionality of a 5 Degrees of Freedom upper limb prosthetic device. This comprehensive dataset, accompanied by the release of control model code, not only enhances transparency but also fosters advancements in prosthetics research. Surface electromyography data set of knee osteoarthritis patients undergoing hydrotherapy and physiotherapy rehabilitation routines
<p>Osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent degenerative diseases in the elderly that affects the structural and functional integrity of the musculoskeletal system. Currently, hydrotherapy is taking relevance for osteoarthritis treatment due to its possible efficacy on pain relief and functionality. This therapy can be evaluated by means of an electromyographic analysis. The objective is to show a database of lower limbs muscles electrical activity in charge of postural stability, comparing the difference between hydrotherapy and conventional therapy through surface electromyography. A signal acquisition methodology was developed measuring electromyographic activity of the Tibialis Anterior, Soleus, Vastus Medialis, Biceps Femoris, Medial Gastrocnemius and Lateral Gastrocnemius muscles, before and after applying a specific exercise routine for knee osteoarthritis. This routine consisted of 12 therapy sessions spread over 4 weeks and could be done in water and on land. </p> <p>The data is organized according to the attendance of 28 patients to the therapy sessions. There are two records per person, before and after each hydrotherapy or physiotherapy session, obtaining a total of 1344 records at the end of the 12 sessions, and 56 data for each session. However, a total of 864 complete records were obtained for both therapies, withdrawing those who missed any of the sessions. There is a personal information database in .CSV format and electromyographic records with a .MAT extension.</p>
Data from: Ictal quantitative surface electromyography correlates with postictal EEG suppression
Objective: To test the hypothesis that neurophysiological biomarkers of muscle activation during convulsive seizures reveal seizure severity, and to determine whether automatically computed surface electromyography (EMG) parameters during seizures can predict postictal generalized EEG suppression (PGES) indicating increased risk for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Wearable EMG devices have been clinically validated for automated detection of generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS). Our goal was to use automated EMG measurements for seizure-characterization and risk-assessment. Methods: Quantitative parameters were automatically computed from surface EMG recorded during convulsive seizures, from deltoid and brachial biceps muscles, in patients admitted to long-term video-EEG monitoring. Parameters evaluated were: the durations of the seizure phases (tonic, clonic), durations of the clonic bursts and silent periods, as well as the dynamics of their evolution (slope). We compared them with the duration of the PGES. Results: We found significant correlations between automatically computed EMG parameters and the duration of PGES (p<0.001). Stepwise multiple regression analysis identified as independent predictors, in deltoid muscle the duration of the clonic phase, and in biceps muscle the duration of the tonic-clonic phases, the average silent period, and the slopes of the silent period and clonic bursts. An algorithm constructed from these parameters identified seizures at increased risk (PGES ≥20s) with an accuracy of 87%. Conclusions: Automatically computed ictal EMG parameters correlate with PGES and may identify seizures at high risk. Classification of Evidence: This study provides Class II evidence that quantitative ictal EMG parameters are biomarkers for high-risk convulsive seizures.

Predicting subjective liking of bitter and sweet liquid solutions using facial electromyography: mixed model dataset
<p>Hedonic responses to foods are often measured using subjective liking ratings scales. This project investigated the potential use of electromyography as a means to predict subjective liking ratings using affective facial muscle activity recorded at different phases of oral processing while tasting liquids. Using linear mixed models, muscle activity recorded while emptying into the mouth, swirling, and thinking about the taste of bitter and sweet liquid solutions was used to predict subjective liking ratings. During different phases of the tasting, these mixed models demonstrate that zygomaticus major activity predicted increased liking and that corrugator supercilii and levator labii superioris predicted decreased liking. The change in liking ratings predicted by each muscle varied depending on whether participants were emptying, swirling, or thinking about the taste.</p>
