Dataset for simulations of a beamline that controls longitudinal phase space whilst transporting LWFA electrons to an undulator

This dataset relates to a design for a particle accelerator beamline. The beamline transports particles (electrons) from a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) source to an undulator. The unique design allows the 'chirp' or 'longitudinal phase space' of the electron distribution to be sheared during transport.
The dataset contains: 1) Initial bunch distributions created by the ASTRA generator program and conversion to MAD8 program format; 2) a working MAD8 batch file; 3) Three set-ups of the beamline to provide positive, negative or no shear; 4) Tracking simulation input files to track the initial distributions through each beamline set-up; 5) Output electron distributions that result from each tracking simulation.

Exceptional electronic transport and quantum oscillations in thin bismuth crystals grown inside van der Waals materials

Confining materials to two-dimensional forms changes the behavior of electrons and enables new devices. However, most materials are challenging to produce as uniform thin crystals. Here, we present a synthesis approach where thin crystals are grown in a nanoscale mold defined by atomically-flat van der Waals (vdW) materials. By heating and compressing bismuth in a vdW-mold made of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), we grow ultraflat bismuth crystals less than 10 nanometers thick. Due to quantum confinement, the bismuth bulk states are gapped, isolating intrinsic Rashba surface states for transport studies. The vdW-molded bismuth shows exceptional electronic transport, enabling the observation of Shubnikov–de Haas quantum oscillations originating from the (111) surface state Landau levels. By measuring the gate-dependent magnetoresistance, we observe multi-carrier quantum oscillations and Landau level splitting, with features originating from both the top and bottom surfaces. Our vdW-mold growth technique establishes a platform for electronic studies and control of bismuth’s Rashba surface states and topological boundary modes. Beyond bismuth, the vdW-molding approach provides a low-cost way to synthesize ultrathin crystals and directly integrate them into a vdW heterostructure.

McMurdo Dry Valleys Community Respiration Rates : Quantifying the Activity of the Electron Transport System (ETS)

An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is monitoring of spatial and temporal patterns, and processes that control net primary production (carbon dynamics) in perennial ice-covered lakes. One of the primary losses of carbon fixed by phytoplankton is through respiration, directly by the phytoplankton themselves and secondarily through the metabolic contributions of heterotrophic organisms such as bacterioplankton and protozoa. The coupling of low metabolic activity and supersaturated gases in the water column prohibits a direct measurement of respiration. Therefore, we measure the respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activity which drives oxidative phosphorylation, and hence oxygen consumption in all aerobic organisms (Packard 1985). This data set addresses this core area of research and estimates a community-wide respiration rate at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes (Hoare, Fryxell and Bonney).

Dataset: Long Range Electron Transport Rates Depend on Wire Dimensions in Cytochrome Nanowires

The ability to redirect electron transport to new reactions in living systems opens possibilities to store energy, generate new products, or probe physiological processes. Recent work by Huang et al. showed that 3D crystals of small tetraheme cytochromes (STC) could transport electrons over nanoscopic to mesoscopic distances by an electron hopping mechanism. Such protein-based structures with multiple localized electron carriers are promising materials for nanowires. A potential barrier to protein nanowire adoption for handling long-range electron transport is that fluctuations at room temperature may distort the nanostructure, hindering efficient electron transport. To study these fluctuations at the nano- and mesoscopic scales, we carry out classical molecular dynamics simulations for a small fragment of a STC nanowire and measure the effective distance distribution for electron tunneling. From distance distributions, we develop a graph network representation for electron transport along nanowires with varying dimensions, and through stochastic methods determine the maximum electron flow that can be driven through these STC wires. Longer nanowires were capable of carrying less electron flow than shorter nanowires with the same diameter, as long electron transfer distances that occasionally arise reduce the efficiency for electron transport.
Thicker nanowires permit more alternative transport pathways, increasing electron transport beyond the increase in cross-section. Thus, this model implies that the design of protein-based nanowires that depend on electron hopping between charge carriers must consider control of the inherent protein flexibility, as more flexible protein-protein interfaces impose a limit on the required minimum diameter to carry currents commensurate with conventional electronics.
