FIGURE 3. A in Myuchelys gen. nov. — a new genus for Elseya latisternum and related forms of Australian freshwater turtle (Testudines: Pleurodira: Chelidae)

FIGURE 3. A phylogeny for the extant genera of the Australian short-necked Chelidae generated using PAUP* (v64d) as the single most parsimonious tree from the character data presented in Table 1. Values on the branches are bootstrap percentages—nodes for which values exceed 70% are considered robust. Phyrnops was used as the outgroup taxon. Note that the genus Elseya, as defined prior to this paper (i.e. Elseya + Myuchelys), was clearly paraphyletic.

Dorsal and lateral views of the holotype of Elseya (Elseya) flaviventralis NTM 13512, adult female from Pine Creek Crossing, South Alligator River Drainage, Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia. 13° 30' S 132° 28' E. The plastron has been disarticulated. Note the uniform coloration of the plastron, free from darker streaks and blotches, and the indistinct angle between the bridge and the plastron. Scale 10 mm.

FIGURE 4 in A new species of freshwater turtle of the genus Elseya (Testudinata: Pleurodira: Chelidae) from the Northern Territory of Australia

FIGURE 4. Distribution of extant species in the genus Elseya. The ranges of Elseya rhodini and Elseya branderhorsti overlap to the west and including the Fly River drainage. Type localities are shown as red dots, with the exception of E. branderhorsti (green dot). The type locality for E. lavarackorum is outside range because it was described from a fossil from Riversleigh now outside its present range. E. rhodini occupies small streams and tributaries; E. branderhorsti occupies tidal regions, lower reaches and lakes, so the two are seldom found in microsympatry.

Figure 3 in Contemporary genetic structure reflects historical drainage isolation in an Australian snapping turtle, Elseya albagula

Figure 3. Bayesian population assignments for Elseya albagula individuals based on 12 microsatellite loci analysed in STRUCTURE, indicating structure by region and catchment. Individuals are represented by coloured vertical bars, which represent per cent genetic membership (y axis) within genetic units as indicated above each diagram. A, individual differentiation between two regional units (K = 2), and B, further substructuring amongst catchments within the southern region (K = 3). Black lines separate sampling locations, identified below (x axis). B, Burnett, F, Fitzroy; M, Mary.
