Endurance swimming performance and physiology of juvenile Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) at different temperatures, CA, 2022
This dataset provides information on the endurance swimming performance and physiological responses of juvenile Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris), reared and tested at the University of California, Davis, in 2022. Fish were acclimated to two temperature treatments (13°C and 18°C) for 14 days prior to swimming trials. Endurance tests were conducted at 47–53 days post-hatch (DPH) in modified swim tunnels at fixed water velocities (25–55 cm s⁻¹) to measure time-to-fatigue (End.min), station-holding behavior (Station_holding), and swimming type (Swim.type). Fish morphometrics (e.g., weight, fork length, total length) were recorded before trials. Post-swim physiological analyses included whole-body measurements of cortisol, glucose, lactate, and protein. Tissue homogenates were processed to determine concentrations normalized to fish weight (e.g., Cortisol_ng_g, Glucose_ug_g, Lactate_ug_g). Standard curves showed high assay linearity (R² > 0.98) and low variability (CV < 10%). This dataset contributes to understanding sturgeon endurance and physiological stress under different environmental conditions, providing insights into their resilience to temperature and flow changes relevant to river management and conservation efforts. Variables include: species, developmental stage (DPH), rearing and trial conditions (tank, temperature, velocity), fish morphometrics (weight, fork length, total length), and physiological metrics (cortisol, protein, glucose, and lactate).
Endurance swimming performance and physiology of juvenile sturgeon at different temperatures, 2022-2024
Endurance swimming trials were conducted on both Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) and White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) across multiple size classes to assess the effects of temperature and velocity on swimming performance. Fish were exposed to various water temperatures for at least 14 days and swam at fixed-water velocities (cm/s) in controlled swim tunnels. Data were collected on parameters such as species, size class, trial temperature, velocity, recovery time, time-to-fatigue, swim type classifications, and whether the trials were completed. Additional metadata included fish morphometrics such as fork length, total length, weight, and trial dates, enabling comparisons across species, size, and treatment conditions. Physiological responses were measured post-swimming to evaluate the impacts of endurance trials on the smallest size class of Green Sturgeon (5cm fork length): - In 2022, whole-body cortisol, glucose, and lactate concentrations were measured immediately following endurance trials (0 min recovery). - In 2023, recovery dynamics were incorporated, with physiological responses assessed at multiple time points (0 min, 15 min, 30 min, and 60 min post-trial). - In 2022 and 2023 the baseline physiological metrics (whole-body cortisol, glucose, and lactate concentrations) of control fish (not subjected to swimming trials) were measured across all temperatures, years, species, and size classes. This dataset provides information on sturgeon swimming performance under varied temperature conditions, as well as the associated physiological stress responses, offering valuable insights into their endurance capabilities and recovery processes. The findings can inform conservation strategies, habitat management, and aquaculture practices for these ecologically and economically important species.
Supporting data for "The methylome of Biomphalaria glabrata and other mollusks: enduring modification of epigenetic landscape and phenotypic traits by a new DNA methylation inhibitor"
<p>Methylome of the fresh water snail <em>Biomphalaria glabrata</em>. DNA was extracted from the feet of 10 individuals of <em>B. glabrata</em> originally isolated from Brazil. These snails have been cultivated in the laboratory since 1960. Tissue were grinded at 4°C and incubated in 1 ml volume of lysis buffer (20 mM TRIS pH 8; 1 mM EDTA; 100 mM NaCl; 0.5% SDS), with 0.3 mg of proteinase K at 55°C for 1 night. Afterwards, lysate was purified with phenol-chloroform and DNA was isopropanol precipitated. The extracted DNA (around 138ng/µL) was poled in equivalent amounts and Whole Genome Bisulfite Sequencing was done by GATC-biotech (www.gatc-biotech.com). The principle of this treatment is to convert non-methylated cytosines of gDNA into deoxy-uracil, whereas methylated cytosines remain intact. WGBS was done according to the Lister protocol (sequence 2 forward strands only). The reference genome (Biomphalaria-glabrata-BB02_SCAFFOLDS_BglaB1.fa) and annotation (Biomphalaria-glabrata-BB02_BASEFEATURES_BglaB1.3.gff3) used in this project are available on VectorBase (https://www.vectorbase.org/). To align our short reads, we chose to use two specific bisulfite mapping tools, BSMAP 1.0.0 (https://code.google.com/p/bsmap/) and Bismark 0.10.2 (www.bioinformatics.babraham.ac.uk /projects/bismark/), to compare their efficiency and convenience to finally work with the more suitable one on our datasets. IGV (Interactive Genomics Viewer, https://www.broadinstitute.org/igv/) was used to visualized final alignments.<br> BSMAP performed better than Bismark and was used for downstream analyses. Without default parameters alignement efficiency for BSMAP is 47.1%, allowing for 2 mismatches increases it to 55.6%. Methylation occurs predominantly in CpGs. (C methylated in CpG context: 12.4%, C methylated in CHG context: 0.5%, C methylated in CHH context: 0.5%) The major part of CpG sites, 95.7% were unmethylated, of the remaining 4.3% of CpG sites around 3.8% had low methylation, and 0.5% were completely methylated. Methylation is of the mosaic type. Methylation is relatively low with 1.2% of total cytosines. Our analyses suggested that conserved genes and genes with stable expression are localized in high methylated regions of the genome. Finally, we see that repetitive sequences were predominantly situated in low methylated regions of <em>B. glabrata</em>. </p> <p>Wiggle files were generated for CpG pairs only.</p> <p>Produced at IHPE (http://ihpe.univ-perp.fr/)</p>
Exergame for Continuous and Transparent Monitoring of Handgrip Strength and Endurance
<p>Grip Strength reduction is a marker of the age-related functional decline. An anti-stress ball and an exergame to continuously and transparently monitor handgrip strength and endurance in older persons have been developed within the context of the European Project MOVECARE. The description of the exergame can be found in the paper associated to the dataset here uploaded. </p> <p>The game was tested on ten young healthy subjects and the results of maximal handgrip force provided by the game were compared to the handgrip measured with the Jamar dynamometer. High correlation was found, suggesting that the game can represent a promising and non-intrusive tool to help detecting early signs of frailty in community-dwelling older persons. </p> <p>The data here uploaded consist of an excel file with two sheets. </p> <p>- sheet 1: Values of handgrip measured by the Jamar and the anti-stress ball on 10 subjects. Each subject performed three repetitions of each measurement. </p> <p> - sheet 2: the System Usability Scale scores collected on the 10 subjects. Scores of individual questions, as well as total scores, are reported. </p>
Data from: Rapid turnover of a pea aphid superclone mediated by thermal endurance in central Chile
<p>Global change drivers are imposing novel conditions on Earth's ecosystems at an unprecedented rate. Among them, biological invasions and climate change are of critical concern. It is generally thought that strictly asexual populations will be more susceptible to rapid environmental alterations due to their lack of genetic variability and, thus, of adaptive responses. In this study, we evaluated the persistence of a widely distributed asexual lineage of the alfalfa race of the pea aphid, <em>Acyrthosiphon pisum, </em>along a latitudinal transect of approximately 600 Km in central Chile after facing environmental change for a decade. Based on microsatellite markers, we found an almost total replacement of the original aphid superclone by a new variant. Considering the unprecedented warming that this region has experienced in recent years, we experimentally evaluated the reproductive performance of these two <em>A. pisum</em> lineages at different thermal regimes. The new variant exhibits higher rates of population increase at warmer temperatures, and computer simulations employing a representative temperature dataset suggest that it might competitively displace the original superclone. These results support the idea of a superclone turnover mediated by differential reproductive performance under changing temperatures.</p>

Endurance and Avoidance Response Patterns in Pain Patients: Application of Action Control Theory in Pain Research
<p>Identifying pain-related response patterns and understanding underlying functional mechanisms of symptom formation and recovery are essential steps for tailoring interventions to increase the effectiveness of treatment. The focus of this study thus was to replicate pain-related avoidance and endurance response patterns associated with the Fear-Avoidance Model (FAM) and Avoidance-Endurance Model (AEM) by means of latent profile analysis. Apart from the analysis of primary and other secondary characteristics of the pain response profiles, we especially analyzed the influence of stress and action control as covariates in accordance with Action Control Theory (ACT).</p>
Plasma metabolites of three migrant bird species during nocturnal endurance flight
<p>Plasma metabolites of the fat-, protein and carbohydrate metabolism were analysed in European robins, garden warblers and pied flycatchers during their nocturnal migration on a Swiss Alpine pass, Col de Bretolet. Birds were caught in high mist nets out of their nocturnal flight; hence the plasma metabolites reflect the metabolism of a flying, fasting bird.</p>

Ultrafast high-endurance memory based on sliding ferroelectrics
<p>The persistence of voltage-switchable collective electronic phenomena down to the atomic scale has extensive implications for area-efficient and energy-efficient electronics, especially in emerging nonvolatile memory technology. In this study, we investigate the performance of a ferroelectric field-effect transistor (FeFET) based on sliding ferroelectricity in bilayer boron nitride at room temperature. Sliding ferroelectricity represents a novel form of atomically thin two-dimensional ferroelectrics, characterized by the switching of out-of-plane polarization through interlayer sliding motion. We examined the FeFET device employing monolayer graphene as the channel layer, which demonstrated ultrafast switching speeds on the nanosecond scale and high endurance exceeding 1011 switching cycles, comparable to state-of-the-art FeFET devices. These superior characteristics highlight the potential of two-dimensional sliding ferroelectrics for inspiring next-generation nonvolatile memory technology.</p>
Dataset related to the article "Cardiac Biomarkers and Autoantibodies in Endurance Athletes: Potential Similarities with Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy Pathogenic Mechanisms"
<p>This record contains raw data related to the article “Cardiac Biomarkers and Autoantibodies in Endurance Athletes: Potential Similarities with Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy Pathogenic Mechanisms". </p> <p>The "Extreme Exercise Hypothesis" states that when individuals perform training beyond the ideal exercise dose, a decline in the beneficial effects of physical activity occurs. This is due to significant changes in myocardial structure and function, such as hemodynamic alterations, cardiac chamber enlargement and hypertrophy, myocardial inflammation, oxidative stress, fibrosis, and conduction changes. In addition, an increased amount of circulating biomarkers of exercise-induced damage has been reported. Although these changes are often reversible, long-lasting cardiac damage may develop after years of intense physical exercise. Since several features of the athlete's heart overlap with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), the syndrome of "exercise-induced ACM" has been postulated. Thus, the distinction between ACM and the athlete's heart may be challenging. Recently, an autoimmune mechanism has been discovered in ACM patients linked to their characteristic junctional impairment. Since cardiac junctions are similarly impaired by intense physical activity due to the strong myocardial stretching, we propose in the present work the novel hypothesis of an autoimmune response in endurance athletes. This investigation may deepen the knowledge about the pathological remodeling and relative activated mechanisms induced by intense endurance exercise, potentially improving the early recognition of whom is actually at risk.</p>
