Human-Robot Interaction Conversational User Enjoyment Scale (HRI CUES) Dataset - Anonymized
<p>Human-Robot Interaction Conversational User Enjoyment Scale (HRI CUES) and this corresponding dataset aim to provide tools for measuring user enjoyment from an external perspective to supplement self-reported user enjoyment responses in human-robot interaction research, with future potential application for autonomous detection of user enjoyment in real-time in robots and agents for adapting conversations contingently to provide enjoyable and long-lasting interactions.</p> <p>The dataset consists of 25 older adults' (12 men, 13 women) open-domain dialogue with an autonomous companion robot with an integrated large language model (GPT-3.5, text-davinci-003) from participatory design workshops conducted in March 2023. The conversations are annotated for user enjoyment based on HRI CUES by 3 expert annotators, as described in the paper (arXiv:2405.01354). Robot architecture and participatory design workshops are described in DOI: 10.21203/rs.3.rs-2884789/v1.</p> <p><strong>Exchanges</strong> file contains the participant ID, the number of the turn (conversation exchange by Robot-Participant response), the start and end of the turn, the anonymized transcript for the turn, and three annotator scores for the user enjoyment in the exchange. </p> <p><strong>Overall </strong>file contains the participant ID, self-reported user perception scores from the questionnaire ("I was satisfied with my conversation with the robot", "It was fun talking to the robot", "The conversation with the robot was interesting", "It felt strange talking to the robot") and three annotator scores for the user enjoyment in the overall interaction.</p> <p>The conversations are in Swedish. Participants' mean age is 74.6 (SD=5.8). 20 participants had no prior interaction with a robot, and only one had previously talked with a robot. The average interaction duration is 7.4 min (SD=1.5) with 12 to 29 turns. Each turn lasts 5 to 61 seconds (M=17.7, SD=7.2). An experimental test of the impact of avian diversity on attentional benefits and enjoyment of people experiencing urban green-space
<p>Biodiversity may play a key role in generating the well-being benefits of visiting green-spaces.</p> <p>The ability of people to accurately perceive variation in biodiversity is, however, unclear and evidence supporting links between biodiversity exposure and well-being outcomes remains equivocal. In part, this is due to the paucity of controlled experimental studies that deal adequately with confounding factors that covary with biodiversity.</p> <p>Attention restoration theory (ART) proposes that natural environments contain many softly fascinating stimuli that provide visitors with a sense of separation from their normal settings and routines, switching off direct attention and allowing recovery from attention fatigue. Increased biodiversity could increase these stimuli, and ART therefore potentially provides a mediating effect linking biodiversity to well-being.</p> <p>Here, we conduct a controlled experiment in which participants virtually experience urban green-space containing high and low levels of avian biodiversity (altered by manipulating bird song).</p> <p>Respondents accurately identified the contrast in biodiversity and reported greater enjoyment of the high biodiversity treatment than the low diversity control. Higher biodiversity did not, however, elicit greater self-reported stimulation or restoration, and did not increase perceived restorativeness scores or attentional capacity (quantified using the Digit Span Backwards attention test).</p> <p>Respondents that were more connected to nature, however, had greater attentional capacity following exposure to green-space.</p> <p>Our study provides rare experimental evidence that people can accurately detect variation in biodiversity, that high avian diversity boosts visitor perceptions of urban green-space quality, and that people with increased nature connectedness show enhanced attentional capacity.</p>

Enjoyment and Development of Oral English Proficiency in Future Teachers
<p>This study aimed to analyze the relationship between enjoyment and the development of oral proficiency in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) to future teachers. It delved into understanding the role of enjoyment as a predictor of oral proficiency and validated the proposed model for assessing enjoyment in EFL. The sample comprised 119 students from a State Higher School of Education in Peru, randomly selected from various teaching areas and stratified according to English language competency levels ranging from A1 to B1+ based on the Common European Framework of Reference. Students' oral proficiency was evaluated using a rubric covering five aspects, and enjoyment was assessed through a ten-question questionnaire. The results initially demonstrated a significant positive relationship (r = 0.900, p < 0.001) between enjoyment and oral proficiency in English. Secondly, a linear regression model determined that enjoyment was a highly significant predictor (β = 0.957, p < 0.001) of oral proficiency. These findings support the importance of enjoyment in developing oral proficiency as a reliable tool to predict oral proficiency development in English and validate the proposed enjoyment-based model in the context of EFL teacher education.</p> <p> </p> <p>This study highlighted a significant influence of enjoyment on the development of oral proficiency in teaching English as a foreign language to prospective teachers. Results analysis underscored the importance of enjoyment as a significant predictor of oral proficiency, suggesting that promoting enjoyment in the learning process can be an effective strategy to foster significant development of oral skills in English. These findings have significant implications for teacher education, emphasizing the need to integrate activities and psycho-pedagogical approaches that promote enjoyment in the English classroom. Furthermore, the proposed model was validated as a reliable tool to assess enjoyment in the context of EFL teacher education. Understanding and nurturing enjoyment in learning English can significantly enhance the oral skills of future teachers and, ultimately, contribute to communicative competence and a stronger command of the English language.</p>
