Dataset on involved actors and their roles in the governance of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes

In the presented dataset we have analyzed 19 innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes from six European countries. The selected contracts represent examples of four different contract types: result-based, collective, land tenure, and value chain contracts.

For the analysis we used a three step approach:

Step 1: We employed a method mix combining literature review, web search, and expert consultation to identify potential case examples for the innovative contracts, resulting in a final sample of four to five contracts per contract types including contracts from Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Step 2: We designed a survey structured in accordance with Elinor Ostrom’s institutional analysis and development (IAD) framework to collect detailed information on overall 34 variables for each contract, yielding a data matrix with 646 data points.

Step 3: We conducted an in-depth analysis for each contract on the involved actors and their roles in contract governance roles, generating a detailed inventory of 179 identified actors where each actor was assigned one or several out of 16 possible governance roles, creating a data matrix of 2,864 data points.

The dataset generated through these three steps contains 84 data files, including tables, figures, maps, and one text file.

The dataset can be re-used by all interested in the institutional and governance analysis of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes.

The dataset is linked to Work package 2 (WP2), Task 2.2 (T2.2), and Deliverable 2.2 (D2.2) of the research and innovation action ‘Contracts2.0’ (https://www.project-contracts20.eu/) funded under grant agreement no. 818190 through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program.

This dataset contains the information required to reproduce the results presented in the following research paper: Sattler, C., Barghusen, R., Bredemeier, B., Dutilly, C., Prager, K. (2023). Institutional analysis of actors involved in the governance of innovative contracts for agri-environmental and climate schemes. Social (-ecological) network analysis in environmental governance - central publications, important concepts and areas of application data collected in January 2019

Social and Social-Ecological Network Analysis (S(E)NA) have recently emerged as new methods in the environmental governance (EG) literature. By investigating networks of connections between actors, S(E)NA advances the understanding of who is involved in EG and how. We provide an overview of the EG literature applying S(E)NA and respective metrics of 1) a citation network analysis, 2) topic detection methods and 3) a similarity network analysis. 20 publications occupy central positions as sources, storers or bridges of knowledge in the citation network. While we see S(E)NA applied in diverse resource contexts, these are mainly discussed on the local spatial level, with a focus on “policy” or “collaboration”. We discover that “power structures” and “the production of knowledge” are themes influencing the whole field.

Data for the paper of "Does Government Environmental Audit Promote Green Transformation? Evidence from China's High-carbon Enterprises"

This study selected listed companies in high-carbon industries in the A-share market of China from 2013 to 2019 as the initial sample. The specific screening process is as follows: Firstly, based on the "China Listed Company Carbon Emission Ranking (2021)" jointly released by the "Caijing" magazine and China Carbon Investment Group, which includes thirteen high-energy consumption and heavily polluting industries such as petrochemicals, chemicals, building materials, steel, non-ferrous metals, papermaking, electricity, aviation, mining, fermentation, textiles, brewing, and pharmaceuticals (Yang et al., 2020), the top 100 A-share companies in terms of carbon emissions on the ranking were identified. Then, according to the industry classification standards of the China Securities Regulatory Commission in 2012, the industries in which these companies are classified were determined. Specifically, 11 industries including electricity, non-metallic mineral products, air transportation, ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing, coal mining and washing, petroleum processing, coking and nuclear fuel processing, and non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing were selected as high-carbon industries. To ensure the robustness of the results, ST, *ST companies, and samples with missing variable values were further excluded, resulting in a final sample of 2344 data observations. The data on GEA were manually compiled from the "China Audit Yearbook," while the data on green patent applications by listed companies were sourced from the CNRDS database. Other data were obtained from the CSMAR database. To eliminate the potential impact of outliers on the research results, this study winsorized continuous variables at the 1st and 99th percentiles. Data processing and analysis were conducted using Stata 16 and Excel 2021 software.
