[Supplementary Information] Can LCA be FAIR? – Assessing the status quo and opportunities for FAIR data sharing

This is the supplementary information related to a the manuscript - 'Can LCA be FAIR?' - Assessing the status quo and opportunities for FAIR data sharing. The purpose of this study is to assess the status quo of data sharing in LCA in relation to the FAIR data principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-use).

The supplementary information consists of three files:

SI 1 - How the life cycle inventory is shared in relation to the FAIR data principles in 25 peer reviewed LCA journal articles between 2018 -2022.

SI 2 - Review of ten data management plans of EU Horizon Europe projects in relation to LCA to assess the recommendations on the implementation of FAIR principles.

How to Ensure Researchers Share Their FAIR Data: Practical Tips and Tools [Online Workshop, Recording]

The online hands-on workshop was aimed at trainers and support staff covering critical elements of data sharing and available tools and resources for supporting Open Science including:
• Open Science resources and Data Management Planning
• Consent and Ethical considerations
• Legislation and Licence frameworks
The objectives of the workshop were i) to raise awareness of key tools and resources available for Open Science training ii) to enable a platform to exchange ideas regarding key training topics and iii)n to provide training materials and worksheets for future reuse.
The workshop consisted of presentations, demos, a roundtable discussion on ethical considerations, a showcase of licence frameworks at different European archives and an exercise with all participants fostering an exchange of experiences focused on learnt lessons.

The video is available on the CESSDA Training YouTube channel.

Is data sharing in LCA FAIR

Data for Setac Abstract -

In the light of rising awareness, and growing need of better data management across disciplines, it is pertinent to investigate how the FAIR principles are utilized in the LCA domain. The purpose of this research is to investigate the status quo of data sharing by LCA practitioners. This study will look into data shared in relation to research outputs (e.g. peer reviewed articles). The life cycle inventory (LCI) is the most common data that is re-used, hence this study investigates how the LCI is shared in peer reviewed articles. A review of the findability, accessibility, interoperability and re-usability of the LCI data of 25 peer reviewed articles was performed. This study highlights although there is growing awareness on the importance of data sharing , the lack of a clear guidelines within the LCA domain as well as limited infrastructure is a major barrier in implementing FAIR principles. Research data sharing is beyond the sole responsibility of individual researchers. The overall research and funding infrastructure must consider the diversity of practices, differences in fields, facilitate the sharing of a broad range of research outputs. Current gaps in academic data sharing can be seen as opportunities to build a common framework

FAIRmat Tutorial 4: NOMAD Oasis and FAIR data collaboration and sharing

FAIRmat further develops NOMAD from a central publishing service to a federated data management platform. The NOMAD Oasis is part of this. Institutes, universities, and research groups use NOMAD Oasis as a local repository to manage their research data. Each method is different and requires ways of data acquisition, different data formats, different analysis tools, but FAIR-ness requires that all data is well described with rich specific metadata.

In this tutorial, we focus on how to get started with NOMAD Oasis and adapt it to your research. One the first day, two talks will introduce you the general FAIRmat strategy and its "bottom-up" approach to manage heterogenous but FAIR data. On the second day, we will give the practical, step-by-step guides to get started with an Oasis: How you can install NOMAD Oasis, create example data, add schemas, and create ELNs.

Disclaimer: NOMAD is being continuously developed based on input and feedback from the scientific community. Hence the features, services or interface may have changed since the time of recording of this video. For up-to-date information please consult our latest tutorials and the NOMAD documentation https://nomad-lab.eu/prod/v1/docs/

Supplementary Figure 1: The road to FAIR genomes: a gap analysis of NGS data generation and sharing in the Netherlands

Supplementary Figure 1: a flow chart conceptualizing the gap analysis. A generic NGS process diagram was created, based on a commonly used care workflow (Step 1). Next, a questionnaire about the inventory of (meta)data standards and retrieval of gaps was drafted (Step 2), which together with the process diagram was used as a basis for the subsequent interviews (Step 3). In parallel with the first three steps, a short literature review was performed (Step 4). The interviews were processed and current gaps were identified, anonymized and classified (Step 5). Finally, the results are shared with the community through presentations, publications and suggestions for next steps for addressing the identified gaps.
