Flash Flood Severity Index (Flashiness) dataset for the United States

(Saharia et al., 2017)

Flash floods, a subset of floods, are a particularly damaging natural hazard worldwide because of their multidisciplinary nature, difficulty in forecasting, and fast onset that limits emergency responses. In this study, a new variable called “flashiness” is introduced as a measure of flood severity. This work utilizes a representative and long archive of flooding events spanning 78 years to map flash flood severity, as quantified by the flashiness variable. Flood severity is then modeled as a function of a large number of geomorphological and climatological variables, which is then used to extend and regionalize the flashiness variable from gauged basins to a high-resolution grid covering the conterminous United States. Six flash flood “hotspots” are identified and additional analysis is presented on the seasonality of flash flooding. The findings from this study are then compared to other related datasets in the United States, including National Weather Service storm reports and a historical flood fatalities database.

A database of FLASH Murine In-Vivo Studies

The database contains peer-reviewed papers published until March 2024 on the FLASH in-vivo (murine) experiments. From each paper, previously defined parameters have been manually extracted and/or recalculated to ensure compatibility within the database entries.

We provide two types of datasets: a user-friendly web-based Notion database and two spreadsheets. The database contains all the reviewed papers with extracted information in text or numeric form. Users can duplicate the database or view, search, filter, and reorganise online entries. The spreadsheets contain the data for the most analysed endpoints (skin toxicity, survival rate, and crypt cells), allowing a comparative analysis.

Our goal with this database is to increase awareness of the results and their variability and provide the community with a useful research and analysis tool.

RGB orthophoto mosaic, DSM, 3d point cloud and LIDAR LAZ of the flash flood damages in Karavelovo and Bogdan vilages, Bulgaria- September 2, 2022

The present dataset contains geospatial resources aimed at investigating and assessing the consequences of a flash flood of debris flow character, relatively significant in extent and magnitude of damage, in the area of two villages in the Municipality of Karlovo, located in central Bulgaria, which happened on September 2, 2022. For this purpose, an integrated approach based on the combination of digital photogrammetry with high spatial resolution and spatial accuracy, based on a fixed wing unmanned aerial system, and laser altimetry (LIDAR), based on a multirotor unmanned platform, was used. The data collection was carried out 2 days after the occurrence of the disaster, resulting in the generation of valuable information resources that allow not only to spatially and quantitatively determine the damage of the disaster, but also to reveal the mechanism of occurrence of the phenomenon: 1) orthophoto mosaic, Digital surface model-DSM and 3D point cloud (from photogrammetry) 2) Classified 3D point cloud- from LIDAR survey.

Learned value modulates the access to visual awareness during continuous flash suppression

Data from Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 are reported in separate files.

Each line contains the mean suppression time of a target grating under continuous flash suppression expressed in seconds for one participant.

Each column refers to a different condition:
HREV = visual stimuli associated with high monetary reward
LREV = visual stimuli associated with low monetary reward
base = baseline measurements before associative learning
P1 = first measurement after associative learning
P2 = second measurement after associative learning
P3 = third measurement after associative learning

For experiment 1, a short (20 trials) associative learning recall session was performed between P1 and P2 and between P2 and P3.

Flash Poll June 2022 - Plant Health

This survey by EFSA provides insights in terms of:

• Europeans’ perception and knowledge of plant health, perceived benefits of healthy plants and perceived problems of risks with plant health; perceived concerns regarding the effects of plant pests and diseases on different areas;

• Europeans’ awareness; acceptance; concerns re non-compliance; and knowledge of phytosanitary requirements for passengers carrying plants;

• Europeans’ interest in plant health, concern about environmental matters, among others.

The survey was implemented by the Teleperformance in 24 member states (i.e. all EU27 countries except Cyprus, Luxembourg, and Malta) between 20th and 24th of June 2022. A total of 8,600 respondents from different social and demographic groups completed the survey online in their mother tongue, with 300 to 500 respondents per country. These sample sizes provide robust results and ensure that responses are representative in each of the countries to be surveyed.

The sample was nationally representative with respect to age and gender. Other demographic information collected included education, among others.

Datasets for flash drought analysis in Spain (1961-2018)

The datasets contain information of high spatial resolution (1.21 km2) and weekly frequency in NetCDF format for flash drought analysis in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands over the period 1961-2018, including both the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and meteorological data required for its calculation [i.e., precipitation and reference evapotranspiration (ETo)].

The precipitation and ETo datasets were created using all daily observational information of precipitation, maximum and minimum air temperature, relative humidity, sunshine duration (as a surrogate of solar radiation) and wind speed from the National Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET). FAO-56 Penman–Monteith equation (R. G. Allen et al., 1998) was used to calculate the reference evapotranspiration (ETo), which is a spatially and temporally comparable metric for the atmospheric evaporative demand (AED). Additional details of the dataset development and validation have been described in Vicente-Serrano et al. (2017).

The SPEI was computed at a 1-month time scale following the methodology proposed by Vicente-Serrano et al. (2010).

References:

Allen, R. G., Pereira, L.
