SatTerm experience: vocabulary control and facet analysis help improve the software requirement solicitation process

<p>One of the most difficult steps in the software development process is moving from&nbsp;requirements written in natural, uncontrolled language, to the formalisms required by the design&nbsp;modelling languages. To solve this issue, practitioners should pay attention to the possibility of&nbsp;applying vocabulary control and knowledge representation techniques to produce better&nbsp;specifications. The use of controlled vocabularies and the modelling of the conceptual relationships&nbsp;between concepts in a specific domain are expected to improve the quality of the specifications.<br> Vocabulary control and semantic modelling are promising tools to avoid the most frequent problems&nbsp;in the requirements specification process: lack of consistency and ambiguity.&nbsp;This paper provides a detailed description of the development process of an ontology used for&nbsp;requirements modelling in the area of satellite control systems. The process applied is based on well-established practices and guidelines applied for the construction of controlled vocabularies and&nbsp;faceted classifications schemas. Engineers can use the ontology when writing system specifications&nbsp;using predefined templates. The use of this ontology ensures the consistency of the specifications&nbsp;written by different engineers improves the communication with other parties involved in the system&nbsp;construction activities and sets the foundations for a semi-automated generation of models for&nbsp;subsequent design activities.</p>

Multi-faceted metagenomic analysis of spacecraft associated surfaces reveal planetary protection relevant microbial composition

<p>Supplemental tables and figures for manuscript titled: &quot;Multi-faceted metagenomic analysis of spacecraft associated surfaces reveal planetary protection relevant microbial composition&quot;</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>NASA has been monitoring the microbial burden of spacecraft since the 1970&rsquo;s Viking missions. Originally based upon culture-based and then focused 16S sequencing techniques, we have now applied whole metagenomic sequencing of cleanroom samples at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), including the Spacecraft Assembly Facility (SAF) with the goals of taxonomic identification and for functional assignment. Our samples included facility pre-filters, cleanroom vacuum debris, and surface wipes. The taxonomic composition was carried out by three different analysis tools. Hierarchical clustering analysis separated vacuum particles from SAF DNA samples. Vacuum particle samples were the most diverse while DNA samples from the ISO facilities and the SAF were the least diverse; all three were dominated by Proteobacteria. Wipe samples had higher diversity and were predominated by Actinobacteria, including human commensals <em>Cutibacterium acnes</em> and <em>Corynebacterium</em>. Taxa identified by the three methods were not identical, supporting the use of multiple methods for metagenome characterization. Likewise, functional annotation was performed using multiple methods. Vacuum particle and SAF tricarboxylic acid cycle and amino acid biosynthesis suggested that many of the identified microorganisms have the ability to grow in nutrient-limited environments. In total, 18 high quality metagenome assembled genomes were generated and were dominated by <em>Moraxella osloensis</em> or <em>Malassezia restricta</em>. A <em>M. osloensis </em>MAG was assembled into a single circular scaffold and gene annotated. &nbsp;This includes a rigorous quantitative determination of microbial loads, and a qualitative dissection of microbial composition. Genomic assembly led to greater confidence of species identification and their functional roles.</p>

Modelling a folksonomy with the postulational approach to facet analysis

<p>An in-depth study of faceted classification theory, as presented by Ranganathan and further developed by Brian Vickery and the Classification Research Group, led to the creation of a methodology based on the Postulate of Fundamental Categories, the Postulate of Basic Facet and the Postulate of Isolate Facet. This methodology was then used to analyze the facets of a dataset consisting of over 107,000 instances of 1,275 unique tags representing 76 popular non-fiction history books collected from the LibraryThing folksonomy (see&nbsp;http://www.librarything.com/). Preliminary results of the facet analysis show the manually-produced, two-faceted classification models in the dataset, one representing the universe of books, and the other representing the universe of subjects within the universe of books. The model representing the universe of books is considered to be complete, whereas the model representing the&nbsp;universe of books is then compared to other models of books,&nbsp;including the BIBO ontology and the FRBR model. Finally, the models are discussed in terms of their confirmation or violation of Ranganathan&rsquo;s seven Canons of Classification, upon which the postulates are based.</p>

Rigorous facet analysis as the basis for constructing all types of knowledge organization scheme

<p>Construction of any kind of knowledge organization system starts from the fundamental building blocks, which are concepts. Once a representative set of concepts has been chosen and each one clearly defined, their hierarchical relationships can be established. Fundamental facets emerge from these hierarchies. In a post-coordinate scheme, such as a thesaurus, associative&nbsp;relationships between concepts in different facets can be defined. In a pre-coordinate scheme, such as a classification, concepts from two or more facets can also be combined, following rules of citation order, to express compound&nbsp;subjects. Citation order has to take account of the role which each concept plays in the compound as well as the facet to which it belongs, and these roles and facet names should be explicitly shown in schedules to distinguish such&nbsp;combinations from hierarchical subordination. The first-cited facet need not be discipline, or field of activity, but can, for example, be &ldquo;things&rdquo; or &ldquo;phenomena&rdquo;.<br> Hierarchies which are not based on genus-species relationships need special consideration; whole-part relationships, for example, are best restricted to concepts which are individual instances rather than classes.</p>
